You are very well right. But, just the same as I grew up, this was not the story I heard. So, the few books and articles and scholars never bothered to set this straight. You don't need a conspiracy theory to explain this.. just a complacency and a duplicity theory.

After Rwanda and Cambodia and as the Democrats contemplate allowing the slaughter of Iraqis by the million. Its our own humanity that is flawed.

Shame on you for saying there is nothing they could have done. Auschwitz ran almost to the last days of the war pumping out burnt offerings.

If someone gave a damn, they could have put it out of business along with its sister facilities. There is nothing they cared to do, it wasn't a priority.

We shouldn't say never again. We should say over and over again.

The picture shows Hitler and a group of pilots, not generals. Is the rest of your research equally shoddy?

I'm going to tackle your points completely, but somewhat out of order.

Shame on you for saying there is nothing they could have done. Auschwitz ran almost to the last days of the war pumping out burnt offerings.

And that, my friend, is the essence of the problem. While Germany was under attack from all sides by millions of men, Hitler still diverted vast numbers of men and resources away from the war effort and towards killing the Jews. The hundreds of thousands of men involved in perpetrating the Holocaust could have been used with much effect on the Eastern and Western fronts. Instead, Hitler decided it was better to take them away from the front, lose the war and kill the Jews than win the war and let them live. What that should tell you is the pathological -- and fundamentally irrational -- obsession the Nazis had with carrying out the Holocaust. Even in the last days of the war, the first priority of the German state was in exterminating the Jews. It wasn't that Auschwitz was an oversight. Rather, there was nothing the Allies could have done to divert Nazi resources away from the killing of Jews when that was what they had resolved to do above all else. The only way to save the Jews was to defeat the Nazis as quickly as possible. And that's precisely what the Allies saw and did.

If someone gave a damn, they could have put it out of business along with its sister facilities.

That's absolutely not true. Not only did a lot of people "give a damn," but bombing Auschwitz was explicitly examined and rejected -- not just by the US Government but by the entire American Jewish community as well -- for thoroughly sound reasons (technical, political and strategic) that I would be more than happy to get into if you're interested.

So, the few books and articles and scholars never bothered to set this straight. You don't need a conspiracy theory to explain this.. just a complacency and a duplicity theory.

Complacency and duplicity? Those are absurd charges.

"Complacency" implies the Allies were apathetic about the crimes of the Nazis. That couldn't be further from the truth. The Allied war effort to defeat the Nazis was, if you recall, absolutely the greatest in the field of human history. That's a pretty far cry from complacency. Regarding the Holocaust, the Allies spent enormous resources -- more than a lot of people thought wise -- to free Jews. Again, no complacency.

And duplicity? That's saying that the Allies actually supported the Holocaust, a claim so completely unsupported any evidence that it seems not worth talking about.

By the latter part of the war, the German Army General Staff [OKH] was restricted to supervising operations on the Eastern Front. OKW [Oberkommando Wehrmacht] commanded operations on all other fronts. OKW had staffs from OKL and OKM, as well as OKH to participate in OKW planning and ops. OKH did not.

It also helped that the fuel tank of the ME 109s only allowed about 10 minutes in the London area, allowing the RAF a free shot at the bombers when the 109s left.

Goering [I think it was 1943] was forced into a public air raid shelter when he was caught in the open during a raid on Berlin. When he came in, he said the people already there, “Hi. My name is Meyer”.

They did. The Brits were decrypting ENIGMA reports being sent on almost a daily basis to RSHA headquarters in Berlin from the the Einsatzgruppen in Russia reporting body counts.

The government decided NOT to use the Venona transcripts to publicly expose Hiss, or to prosecute the Rosenbergs, in order not to tip the Reds that he had cracked some of their old codes.

I have heard all of this, but you know when I think about this rationalization, that it was taking all of Hitler's resources to gas Jews, this was just not the case. It did tie up some rail cars and some trains and some SS workers and some chemicals. Not much.

Yes it was pathological

I read this at the National Holocaust museum but it didn't persuade me there either. Those mouths to feed would have been a worse drain. This is just rationalizing.

Its alright, this is an old ghost. The new ghosts are the more troubling and the ghosts who are to come. I know you mean well and so many words have been said and written, try to cover and explain and to hide from the truth.

It was a terrible price, to get all of this guilt, to make the impossible happen.

Lucy Dawidowicz, perhaps the leading (and certainly the best known) scholar in this area proved pretty convincingly that the effort the Nazis expended in carrying out the Holocaust was fully equivalent to a third front of the war. I would strongly encourage you to read The War against the Jews for a fuller treatise than you'd get either from me or from a museum display -- again, it seems completely unbelievable, but the data is there.

I know you mean well and so many words have been said and written, try to cover and explain and to hide from the truth.

And you may mean well too. But the fact remains that you have accused the US government of being complicit in one of the worst crimes in human history. That's a very serious libel, even unintended, and one that doesn't stand the light of close scrutiny. Neither the United States nor Britain has anything to apologize for regarding the Holocaust. I've read literally every book written on the subject, and would be happy to argue my point in depth.

I didn’t hear that part of the story! From newsreel photos, Goering appears to be a big fat buffoon; but he must have had a certain charm since he evidently convinced an American guard to let him kill himself rather than hang.

It’s as if Michael Moore actually had a sense of humor.

Goering, in his younger days, looked nothing like the "big fat buffoon" in those newreels. He was a trim, young fighter pilot in the First World War, working alongside, and competing with the likes of Manfred and Lothar Von Richtofen (yes, he was an ace in that war...) Most of the weight he accumulated later was due to his being shot in the groin during the Munich Putsch, by the Weimar Republic police. Even so, he still kept the bearing of a military officer, and thus could command some respect, even from his foes.

That being said, the man was a moral monster, more than willing to appropriate fine art from the estates of those he helped to murder, for his own enjoyment...

Germany was pretty well debauched before Hitler rose to power. Their give a damns had long ago been burnt out in dissipation.

Yes, they should have told the ignorant Prince Harry about it. /sarc

Goering was the last commander of the Flying Circus, the holder of the Pour Le Merite and a recognized ace in WWI.

Goering was no buffoon. At Nurenburg he tied Robert Jackson in knots. He founded the Gestapo. He built a first class [albeit flawed] Air Force from the ground up in five years.

I didn’t realize that about the Gestapo. Allied propaganda painted the buffoon picture pretty well, and he was a little on the porky side.

There’s a Me-262 and, I think, a Me-109 on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. I was surprised at how small, yet gracefully lethal, they looked.

Hey, Slick, you posted it. Your being just as dumb as the author is not a good excuse.

Poorly Done.
