Summer's Fall: NYC Faces Record-Breaking Cold
cbs ^ | 8/21/2007 | wcbs

(CBS) NEW YORK Don't forget to bundle up if you're headed out in New York City today. After all, it is August 21.

The city along with the rest of the tri-state region is feeling the chilly effect of a cold front sweeping through the region, accompanied by cool rain showers.

As of 4 p.m., the high temperature for the day in Central Park was just 59 degrees.

The normal high for today is 82 degrees. The normal low is 67, still well above what the city is expected to see today. Forecasters say temperatures could warm up to only around 61, which would break a city record, though the high fell back again to 58 degrees at 3 o'clock.

"If this high holds up, it will smash the previous record for the coldest high temperature for the day, which is 64 degrees, set back in 1999," CBS 2 meteorologist Jason Cali told wcbstv.com.

In fact, if it doesn't warm up at all for the rest of the day, the 59-degree high would tie the record for the coldest high temperature ever for the month of August in New York City, when it reached just 59 degrees in 1911.

Today's highs are more common in the city for the final days of October, when the average high ranges from 59 degrees to 61 degrees.

The unusually cold air mass has come down from Canada, colliding with the moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin.

Here in Western Washington 16 out of the first 21 days of August have been below normal temps. It’s like September is a month early.

al gore is a loser

Not at all. All he has to do is point out that record-breaking colds just further prove global warming. If the temperature is high that proves global warming, if it's low that proves global warming. In fact even if it's moderate that proves global warming.

If there are storms that proves global warming, if there are tornadoes that proves global warming, if there aren't tornadoes that proves global warming. If it's cloudy that proves global warming, if it's clear that proves global warming, if there's lightning that proves global warming, if there's hail that proves global warming.

When the sky is blue that proves global warming and when the sky isn't blue that proves global warming. If glaciers recede that proves global warming and if birds sing that proves global warming. If water flows downward that proves global warming.

When the clock strikes 3 that proves global warming. When the clock shows other times, that proves global warming.

All temperatures, weather events, weather non-events, all data past present and future, all observations made by and experiences of humans, and indeed everything that happens under the sun provides us with compelling further evidence for global warming. As if we even needed it (because the fact that there's global warming is settled science).

When I lived in the New York area I LOVED late October, wanted it to last all year. It’s sort of San Francisco weather, which is the best (the citizens though, are another story, Freepers excluded).

Global warming, global warming! Isn’t it ironic that just as the Algoracle and his minions get everyone stirred up about global warming, it gets cold? Maybe we puny humans aren’t really in charge of the climate. Duh!

"Cooling, warming? Like what is the difference? Like the weather is changing and that's what he told us anyways... so the carbon thingys are still good and you need to buy them...like duh!"

It is hot and humid(39%) at least for us here in Albuquerque. Our normal high for this time of year is 88 with about 10% humidity.

Rogle, isn't it still monsoon season there? I remember how crazy it was last year (right up to the day we left town for good in late July).

What are New Yorkers complaining about? It’s 101 in the shade down here in the Carolinas.

Send it on down here (with the rest of the Yankee invasion).

It is suppose to be monsoon season and we did have a lot of rain during the first week of Aug. But the last 2 weeks has just been hot, upper 90’s with no isolated thunder storms to cool things down.

You should arrange to have AlGore come to town for a speaking engagement. That’ll cool things down pronto.

Record cold summers are a sure sign of global warming.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Judging from the 101 degree temperature and the 30% humidity, I must have fallen asleep and was trasported to Arizona. It ain’t supposed to be like this in South Carolina! Everything is drying up, one of the wettest areas of the country is starting to look like a desert! I guess I talked too much about how cool the summers had gotten so we are having an old-fashioned August.
