Might be a good time to revisit how we all heard about the the attack on 9/11 and how we reacted to the darkest day in American history.

What emotions were strongest for you on that day?

How did you find out? Did you stay at work? Did you go Home? Who did you call?

Setting in the kitchen, having a last cup of coffee before work. Turned on Fox & Friends and saw ED Hill nearly in tears, incredulous over the first hit. Then I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I just said, “Sh*t, this is war!”

I can’t believe what I saw to this day. There should have been instant nuclear retaliation.

Good for you.

The call for the red, white, and blue attire has been every year since she started there in 2003.......and yes, it is one of those evil public schools.......but I believe she is mature enough now as she starts 4th grade to be able to explain my shirt. I do know that she fully understands the sentiment that created it.

I was asleep on the couch, pregnant with my fifth child.

My husband emerged from the bedroom - while getting ready for work, he listens to the news - and said that an airplane had just flown into the World Trade Center.

He turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane.

I sat up and started to pray. I prayed for two and a half hours. With every new bulletin or piece of info, I prayed. I could not even watch the TV. I did not put my glasses on for the first hour and a half.

I watched the second plane live.

I sobbed most of the day. Went to my sister’s for a while.

We both had quit smoking about six weeks before.

By the end of the day we were both smoking again.

(Thankfully we have kicked the habit now, smokefree for 5.5 years.)

amazing that thread has less than 150 original posts

As I recall, FR was hard to get into most of the day. There was another thread with about 200 posts on 9/11 here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/520255/posts

It began with a phone call.

I was sound asleep, when the phone rang. It was my boyfriend who happened to be a mechanic for the U.S. Air Force.

He told me “Baby, they just put us on alert. Turn on the TV. I won’t be able to get in touch for awhile.”

Scared, and alot confused, I asked him what in Gods name was going on.
He replied. “I don’t have time. I’ve got to go, turn on the TV, I love you. Pray for us all.”

I ran into the den. The phone was ringing again. I turned on CNN as my mother answered the phone.

I turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit.

That is locked in my memory for the rest of my life.

I was at work in Hicksville, Long Island, two hours away from my Manhattan home. I heard about the collapse of the second tower from (believe it or not) Don Imus reporting live as he saw it. I couldn’t return home to my folks and friends until the next day. I went to the Food Emporium and saw they were out of most things. I bought a turkey breast with all the trimmings and thanked God that my family had been spared. On the way home, I saw Bobby Short http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Short
walking his dog. I was sad, but I somehow got the feeling we were going to make it.

I was getting ready for work listening to Rick & Bubba, syndicated radio hosts based in B’ham, AL. Their weather guy, Mark Prater, made a passing comment along the lines of, “Hey the WTC is on fire. They think a small plane crashed.” I turned on the TV just in time to see the 2nd plane hit. Rick & Bubba saw it too, and one of them immediately said this has the MO of Bin Laden.

I called my parents who were driving to NC for their annual anniversary trip, and asked if they had heard. They had, but continued on their trip. I drove to work about 30 minutes away. The planes had already been ordered to land at the nearest runway, and rumors were flying that there were 10 or more planes under the control of terrorists still in the sky. I remember looking up the whole time I drove, shaky and scared, wondering if there were terrorists in Nashville airspace.

My company had our information TVs in the elevator lobbies tuned to a news channel. I spent the day on FR, and periodically checked out the TV. I don’t think I did any work that day. I stopped and bought gas after work for fear that gas prices would sky rocket. I had a class that night (working on my masters). We turned on the TV and watched for about an hour, and then the professor dismissed class.

We had several colleagues from our Houston office visiting Nashville. I don’t think they believed that the planes would be grounded for long, and they hung around for three days. Finally they rented a car and drove home. Another guy visiting from the New York office commandeered a company car, and drove home. We never got that car back!

Last year on the 5th anniversary, Rick & Bubba replayed their entire show from that day. It was so eerie how dead on they were with their guesses about what was going on.

I was sitting in a hotel restaurant in Detroit eating breakfast and watching the big screen TV with a co-worker. We were on a business trip installing a new network in a new branch startup ( We were actually in Auburn Hills). I watched the second plane hit on that TV, and everything became instantly clear, we were being attacked.
Many miles from home, driving a rental car that Enterprise wanted back badly. It was obvious that our return flights to Indianapolis weren’t going to happen after a bit and realizing what was happening was real. We went to the branch right away and the conference room was full, the entire staff was sitting there, watching the big TV, silent. I stood in that conference room and watched those buildings fall. I
Enterprise kept calling my cell asking when we would be returning the car. I told them they could have it back when I got to Indianapolis. We drove home, a long silent drive, watching the gas stations jack gas up to unaffordable prices. Lines to get gas were an hour long in some places. As with almost everyone else, that day is etched in my mind like a permanent recording, I remember almost every detail... especially the sick feeling I had for weeks afterwards, and still to some extent to this day.
I pray... God watch over the families and souls of those lost on that day due to this barbaric attack on freedom. Show them the way of God and help them to feel comforted. Above all, let them live and forgive, but not forget.

I was in the shower when the 1st one hit. I walked out to Fox & Friends discussing it. I got ready and told my husband. We were driving into work and trying to find a radio station to see what was happening. We found Howard Stern. He was on it, and then he described the 2nd plane hitting live on the radio and he nailed who did it. I got to work and followed the coverage for the rest of the day. We had no TV at the office then. We got one within the next week.

Sept. 11th changed my life. All I could think about that day is that my son’s life had changed forever and he wouldn’t even understand how it had changed because he just couldn’t know. So sad.

We will be flying the flag balloon tomorrow in memoriam.
www.usflagballoon.com if anyone is interested.

Unfortunately, the last 2 years, people haven’t even known why we were flying.

I was also getting my son ready for 1/2 day preschool. It was a picture-perfect, azure blue sky September morning. Talk radio was on as is usual.

When they said a plane had hit the World Trade Center I turned on the television. When the second plane hit, I knew my son wasn’t leaving my side. I wasn’t a Freeper yet, but I’m big on reading and I knew in my heart Bin laden was behind it. Our world had changed forever because of these murderous cretins.

As others have stated, NEVER FORGET!

Thanks for asking. This is a good tribute to 9/11. I was reading through some of the posts and it brought it all back to me.

I woke up to the radio alarm and heard them talking about someone flying into the Twin Tower in NY.

I turned on the t.v. while getting ready to go to work in the S.F. Bay Area.

Everyone was thinking it was an accident — no one could imagine!

Then as I was watching, the second plane flew into the second tower.

Instantly, everyone knew it was terrorism.

That day changed everything for me.

I had always been a Republican, but now I am 9/11 Republican. I think everyone knows what I mean.

my girlfriend at the time called me from work and told me to "TURN ON THE F--KING NEWS!!!!"

I was getting ready to go and meet friends for breakfast at the airport ( where it subsequently turned out that Muhammed Atta trained) when I turned on the TV to see the first smoking tower.

The conjecture was, at that time, that it was a freak accident, I wasn't convinced.

Just then the second plane hit, I was dumbstruck, I called my girlfriend (now my wife) and said "Turn on the TV", she said "what Channel?", I said "Any damn channel you want"..

So, are you from Milwaukee? I went to college there. Loved it!

I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, and was dead asleep because I had just flown back from a meeting at the Pentagon (ironic, no?), and had a pass.

Ex-wife (well, then wife) came upstairs and woke me up to watch TV, just in time for the 2nd plane to hit. I told her, “It’s going to be a war.”

Called my boss at work, and asked if we were on alert, and did I need to come in, and he said, “No, stay home...all you’d be doing here is jerk**g off with the rest of us watching it on TV.”

I went into my little girl’s room (she was supposed to start her first day of pre-school that day) and hugged her so hard she squealed.

I knew life as I knew it had just changed. I just didn’t know then how much, where it would lead, and what it would cost...

Regards,

Speaking of dumb comments on TV,

Rick Leventhal reported that some guy had been on the 85th floor and ‘rode’ it down as the tower fell. He was not injured..

I’m no scientist, and even I knew that wasn’t possible.

I had the same thought about the Empire State Building.

I was very sad and very proud of the USA that day.

So many generous unselfish people...It’s a much better country that the wags of popular culture would want us to believe.
