NEW YORK, CNNMoney.com -- The Toyota brand has lost its top position for iron-clad reliability, according to an influential Consumer Reports survey released Tuesday.
The survey dropped Toyota from first to fifth place - behind Honda, Acura, Scion and Subaru - in average vehicle reliability. The rankings are based on average predicted reliability for all models sold under a given brand.
Brands made by Toyota Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. still dominate the rankings: Scion is Toyota's low-priced car brand and Acura is Honda's luxury car brand.
Consumer Reports said it no longer recommends V6 versions of Toyota's Camry or V8 versions of its Tundra pick-up because of poor reliability.
In the past, because Toyota (Charts) products have so consistently proved reliable, the magazine would assume at least average reliability for Toyota's brand new cars, without waiting for survey data from owners.
But from now on, the magazine will wait for a full year of reliability survey data to come in before it recommends a Toyota product - as it does with most other manufacturers.

Um, I said ‘Consumer Reports rates it excellent’ in its off road capability.
I’ve found the steering to be remarkable, but I don’t take it ‘off road’ so I can’t speak to it directly. The difference between how a H2 handles and any other comparable sized SUV is amazing in my experience.
Like any machine, you can break it if you try, or are just stupid in how you use it.

Likewise, you wouldn’t believe the number of people that come up to me when I’m filling up, many with their kids, just wanting to get a look at it up close. I always let em get in....the smiles alone make it worth it, especially little boys and their moms and dads.

I got it, you love Japanese trucks but your opinion as far as full size trucks go doesn't jive with the facts on the ground.
I am actually considering buying one for my next family vehicle. The Tahoe still has 2 more years left in it though.
I had a friend of mine that owns a very nice full loaded Suburban share driving down to Texas a couple of months back.
Upon our return, he told his wife he wants to buy my H2 when I upgrade.
That speaks for itself. Gas milage sucks, but then so does a F350’s, or big caddy. You don’t purchase one of these machines if thats an ‘issue’ financially.
I love mine. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned.
The least reliable car of all, according to Consumer Reports survey, is General Motors’ Pontiac Solstice sports car. Its reliability was calculated to be 234 percent worse than average. It was followed closely by GM’s Cadillac Escalade EXT, which is calculated to be 220 percent less reliable than the average vehicle.

Is there anyone on board who can decipher what is supposed to be meant by terms like”234 percent worse” and “220 percent less reliable”? When I went to school such terms were not permissible and would have been considered meaningless.

You sound like a UAW worker. And until those jokers ground themselves in reality, the foreign manufacturers will continue to whip their butts, both in quality and profit margin.
I had a Ford F-150 that was the third most unreliable POS I’d ever owned. The best part was that the replacement parts, bought from the dealer, were even LESS reliable than the ones being replaced on the truck!
I’ve gone *back* to Japanese trucks because of this and other issues with UAW-built crap.
I believe he did both, but mostly highway. How hard he pushed it off the road I don’t know.

I gotta admit, mine looks so good (Classic glossy black and chrome) I hate even the idea of taking it off road...(chuckle)
Then again, here in the Appalachian Zone, ‘off road’ is subject to personal point of view.....
I’ve had to haul home or help retrieve four H2s from the back of beyond because they broke on the trails we were running.
Nothing else broke, not even the guy running the stock Suzuki Samurai (!), but the H2’s did. Basically, the H2 is a Yukon with a suspension lift and a body kit; both the Yukon and the H2 are overweight for the steering gear they use in terms of offroad use.

Speaking of Ford, I need to buy my wife a new vehicle soon. I like the looks of the new Ford Edge (yes I know its a new model so no reliability data is available yet).

I hear that on the internet quite a bit. I hear all kinds of claims about how the H2 sucks on the internet, come to think about it.
I love mine. Then again, I have no desire to take a 60K machine ‘off road’ when I have two ATV’s (Polaris 700 and 500 respectively).
I can’t imagine just how fast you have to be driving, or how ‘hard’ for that kind of breakage, but the bottom line is you can ‘break’ an M1A1 Abrams if you try hard enough.
Thing is, you don’t have to be driving very fast or very hard to break an H2. Surprisingly, both the Ford Expedition and the barge-like Ford Excursion are far better off road than the H2 is, at least in terms of suspension durability.

You say so. Again, I haven’t had any problems with my H2.
