Suggest McCain's VP Pick (VANITY)
Self ^ | February 7, 2008 | Self

With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.

I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)

As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:

1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.

2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.

3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.

Thoughts?

Any of these guys would fit with Johnny-Boy's conservative ideals:

Either Alan Keyes or Ann Coulter. That might help to “balance” the ticket.

Laura Ingraham

Sorry, she's overqualified for McCain's VP: 1. Too good-looking 2. Too articulate and well-informed -- and feisty 3. Too smart 4. Worked for Clarence Thomas, who probably "wore his conservatism on his sleeve" :)

We need a governor as VP, not a has-been senator who would bring nothing to the ticket.

Like Rove said, the VP choice brings nothing to the ticket but simply tells people you had a moment of sanity. McLame will probably pick someone compatable, Delta Burke or Barbara Streisand is my guess.

Is that “brilliant” VP candidate Ross Perot had in 1992 still around?

Admiral Stockdale? Nope. Died in 2005.

Condi Rice is still on my “long list,” but she used to be on my “short list.” She moved down somewhat in light of her lack of conservatism as SecState (although obviously she is much better than Madeleine.)

And, Condi has the added bonus of being female, to offset Clinton. Lord, how I wish she would offset Clinton!

“A minority or a woman for VP might give McCain just enough of an edge to beat Obama/Hillary”

Oh, great. More of the “we can beat the Democrats by becoming just like them!” mindset.

People should be elected President because they’re the best person for the job. Not because they’re a woman, black, the “right” religion, or members of any other group... except maybe competent.

I think Newt would be the best choice...

He has the name recognition and the conservative cred to get the base back. I know that Gingrich has been wishy-washy on global warming recently. But I still think the name recognition would be worth it and I know of a lot of conervatives that feel that Gingrich is only slightly below Reagan in the ranks of conervative leaders.

Would he accept it? I don't know, I think his relationship with McCain has been a little rocky in the past. But, lets face it, McCain is old, and has had several health scares. There is a good chance that the VP will end up being relavent and I, for one, wouldn't mind having a Presdent Gingrich.

I think he all but has to nominate a woman/minority VP candidate if he wants to beat Obama.

Hillary? I think there’s enough of a ‘not another Bush or Clinton’ sentiment out there among the general public that McCain, especially with his ability to draw the political middle ground, would defeat her quite easily.

...barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.

Is it OK if I hold out for a huge unforeseen event?

Just for a little while, anyway?
