Suggest McCain's VP Pick (VANITY)
Self ^ | February 7, 2008 | Self

With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.

I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)

As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:

1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.

2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.

3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.

Thoughts?

That’s correct. The same could be said of Shrillary, as she is called.

Obama, by contrast, is pretty composed - probably because he’s both vague and vapid.

Nobody can point to a single thing the man has done.
Nobody can outline a single initiative he has successfully promoted.
Nobody can tell us what to expect from the first 100 days of an Obama presidency.

Other than, of course, ‘the troops are coming home’. To be expected from the most left of the leftist Senators, but I guess its still a stated policy position.

McCain is not going to handle CPAC well, and even CPAC is trying to grease the skids with their ‘No Booing’ policy.

Bottom line, however, is that CPAC is THE HOME FIELD!!! If you have to stage manage that appearance, you will need divine help in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Atlanta . . .

I like Steele just fine, but if your thought is to “go black” (to be a bit blunt), I’d prefer Herman Cain of Georgia.

Thanks for a pretty good run down of what happened (especially since I seemed to go into one of my misspelling everyone’s name moments). It was pretty wild!

I'd like to see a McCain/Lieberman ticket, if only because Al Gore's head would explode if they won. :)

I think Cheney was a huge asset for Bush.

One pitfall here. If Obama is the opponent they would say that in the Democratic party the African-American gets to sit in the FRONT of the bus, while the Republicans still put them in the back.

I tend to agree about Cheney. Bush was seen (still is, really) as a good “people person” but NOT articulate and strong on the hard numbers of policy, the wonkery, Cheney was (strong and articulate) and is.

It would be much better for Romney to sit this one out and run in 2012.

Alaska governor Sarah Palin, the anti-Hillary in every way.

Interesting choice...she's cute, too.

“If McCain has any sense, he will announce at CPAC, that he wants Mitt as his running mate. That lines Mitt up for 2012 as the front runner.”

Good choice for VP - Juan McLame and Mitt loose, Mitt becomes a nobody - Great Choice!

Note: NO Sarcasm Intended!
