Suggest McCain's VP Pick (VANITY)
Self ^ | February 7, 2008 | Self

With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.

I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)

As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:

1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.

2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.

3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.

Thoughts?

1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.

That will narrow the field down to, oh, about 40,000,000 conservatives or so.

Even someone like Fred might not be enough to put earrings on McCain's hog.

I say Obama gets the Dem nomination. In a stroke of genius, to unite the country and initiate real change, McCain take Hillary on as his VP. McCain is easily elected, takes the oath of office, and tragically dies as the motorcade enters the White House grounds.

If McCain has any sense, he will announce at CPAC, that he wants Mitt as his running mate.

That lines Mitt up for 2012 as the front runner.

He’ll pick either Hillary or Obama in the name of “consensus building” with Congress.

Go ahead, John. Follow your heart. Pick Rudy.

Expose yourself for the crooked liberal you really are.

Fred was my first choice for President, and I cannot rule him out as a VP pick. But picking Fred has at least two big “costs,” as I see it:

1. Age. I predict that every lede in the MSM would point out that the men’s combined age (136) is the oldest of any “ticket” in history, which it is.

2. Fred wouldn’t help much in the geographic sense. The GOP already has to win most of the previously-Red southern states, and I’m not sure Fred helps in some of the “swing” ones. I hope I’m proven wrong ... !

If McCain is smart, it will be Thompson.

Help him in the south, bring in some conservatives.

But, he’ll probably choose Joe Biden.

Huckabee.

It would end the primary process immediately, and would save McCain's finances for the general election

Wrong reason, the better one being because PERRY IS SUCH A LIAR!
