Me too, I suppose, though not in the sense you’re looking for. I’ve been using the same computer for nearly seven years now (installed XP almost as soon as it came out) with no problems. You’re implying only Mac users have that experience while knuckle-dragging PC users routinely have to deal with constant crashes, reboots, viruses, kicks to the groin, and so on. If only they were smart enough to realize Mac OS X is out there! Throw down some extra money for that pretty white box and all will be well.

I have to say I don’t understand the Mac “chip on the shoulder” bit that this video speaks to and so many people here on this thread make clear. Who cares what computer system you use? Both systems have problems, security and otherwise. I just don’t see PC users running around with something to prove because of what operating system they run. It’s really no different than the Starbucks/Mercedes/Volvo/Hybrid Car/Whatever mentality where people want or need recognition based on the products they use.

Get over it.

As opposed to the about 90% of Vista users who hated their OS.

Count me in. I absolutely HATE Vista with a passion - and Vista SP 1 is supposed to come out in a week or so ... and I heard it's not much better.

But I STILL won't own a Mac. As bad as Vista is, Apple still isn't good enough from my needs. My 3 yr old HP laptop running XP hums right along doing everything I need it to do.

“Mac makes our presentations do backflips, but can it defrag a DNA string, and send the code to Hopkins? Hardly.”

I'm pretty sure that statement is wrong. There is plenty of great DNA research software for Macs, both commercial products and freeware. Some of it is listed here.

That is a good story that illustrates the difference.

I used to use a hole punch to chop out a little notch on the side, so I could flip 5/14 floppies over and use the other side (which was not guaranteed, but never failed me) -— rather clever, IMHO.

That’s no longer the case with OS X.

Under all the glitzy GUI, OS X presents a API for Unix programmers that is a very good parallel to BSD API’s.

Porting over a lot of the FSF/open-source stuff that runs on BSD is not difficult at all. The vast majority of the GNU tools are right there, right now.

What earthly difference does it make to you what someone else buys or uses besides Windows? Does it harm you in some way?

It doesn't matter to me at all, though I am rather tired of listening to the arrogance of Mac owners. I'm typing this on a Linux laptop; I also have a Windows XP laptop, a Windows Vista Desktop with a Mac keyboard, and i grew up on Apple Computers. My personal preference is Vista, with XP a close second. Linux is kinda clunky and too command line oriented for anything but web surfing.

I’ve been a Mac user since the mid-nineties. That was after learning programming on TRS-80s during the 80s.

I needed to use a PC for work, but now can run Windows on my new Mac with fewer crashes and faster reboot time than on my PC... so why use a PC anymore? Windows was a poor attempt at making a PC perform more like a Mac.

BTW, I’m a conservative who doesn’t use whitening strips. I listen to hardcore music when I’m not listening to classical or eighties. I don’t drink lattes, I drink scotch, especially after hunting or fishing. Yes, I’m arrogant... because I’m usually right.

I’ve been a Mac user for years and don’t think I’m particularly arrogant. But one thing I’ve always wondered about, was why it is you never see any threads on FR from Mac users asking for technical help with their computers.

or calling India for technical support

Mac technical support, have never had to call them, don't think I'll ever have to.

Well, that proves the point about the arrogance part.

They sound like rather like hybrid drivers with their superiorty complex.

Man, you hit it out of the park with that observation. Same situation, same mentality. Always needing to justify their purchase.

I equate (now) Macs and Hybrids. For a few users and/or a few specific situations....they make perfect sense.

For the rest, it's just about appearances.

Oh yeah, been there.

That’s when a ten-pack of DSDD floppies cost $15.

I used to be the only guy on a Mac in a PC shop.

Believe me the OS snob thing works both ways.

This thread is an example.

I’ve encountered very few computer savvy Mac users.

I've encountered very few plumbing savvy toiler users. Toilets have become sufficiently reliable that the user, the person who flushes, does not need to know enough to plumb a building in order to use the toilet and flush it.

Early in the days of automobiles, some states required that the operator of an automobile be a licensed engineer. Now, one rarely encounters an engineering savvy automobile operator.

Draw your own conclusions.

It’s been my observation that Mac owners (or for that matter, other Apple products) will never talk trash about their Mac, under any circumstances (Even when a Leopard upgrade destroyed all the files on their Mac). This is because it’s not about owning the best computer, it’s about being able to project an elitist image to the unwashed masses around them. This video helps support the notion that, IN GENERAL, Mac users are arrogant, image-conscious, snobs! Form over functionality.

That's a narrow view coming from someone outside specific industries that depend on the reliability of Macs. Ask anyone in the design, graphics or video industries which computer they use. Mac beats PC hands down for that kind of application. You are just talking apples (as in the fruit) and oranges.

I don’t have an iPod either.

It looked like you had an iPod Mini; but we've already talked about the cold water in the pool.

Get over it.

I use only XP at work and only Mac OSX at home. I've used both Windows and Mac for many years. I don't have a chip on my shoulder. I'm just explaining my choice.
