America's shame 1: Video captures grinning U.S. Marine throwing yelping puppy off cliff in Iraq

Last updated at 13:49pm on 4th March 2008

The U.S. military are investigating a shocking video of a smiling Marine throwing a puppy off the top of a steep hillside in Iraq into a gully below.

The video gained widespread attention and condemnation after appearing on the web site YouTube, where it has been viewed over 8,000 times.

The footage shows two Marines, in combat gear and smiling, as one holds a white-and-black puppy by the scruff of its neck.

The small dog seems to be about eight weeks old and is motionless as it is held.

"Cute little puppy, huh?" says one Marine as he smiles broadly.

"Oh so cute, so cute, little puppy," says another in a child-like voice.

The Marine holding the puppy then turns and hurls the animal overhand into a desert-like gully below.

The puppy can be heard yelping in terror until it thuds to the ground at the bottom of the gully.

"That's mean," one Marine says after, in a sickening understatement.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," a spokesperson revealed.

Marine spokesman Major Chris Perrine believed the culprit is based in Hawaii.

"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will take appropriate action," he said.

The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of about 1,000 Hawaii Marines recently replaced a sister unit in Iraq, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii said the vast majority of Marines "conduct their duties in an honourable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States."

"There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children," said Major Chris Perrine.

"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

Oooh, good catch dirtboy. You are right. Here is a legitimate Marine in his desert BDUs. Very different from the image shown.

Compare to the first image in the thread.

Must have been another “freedom” username.

If you come across it, please ping me.

Yeah, it looked like a fake to me, too.

I found about this very ugly and very disgusting video on Sunday and e-mailed to few goods freepers to take their opinion if this is true or not. They agreed with me that it is true and that if true the military should punish these two very bad soldiers or Marines. I did not want to post it publicly on this forum because I was so disgusted and so angered by it. These two morons should be severely punished.

Even if the puppy was dead, which it may well be the case, it is still very sick and evil to throw it out of the cliff like this.

Sorry! It was FreedomCalls who posted this link...

Looks like the same dog.

And the terrain in question does not look like Iraq.

And the uniform does not look like the current USMC DCUs. (Good eyes, dirtboy.) The Marines are wearing the digital pattern now.

Once again. They are innocent until guilty. No matter if they were throwing furry brown bunny rabbits over the cliff.

Would you be as outraged if it was a rattlesnake thrown over the cliff?

Of course not. It is us who creates are own animal farm by giving more protection over something cute and furry rather than something ugly. Even though, by your own words they should be equally protected.

What you're saying, then, is that you'd be perfectly within your rights to walk up to any animal that would fit under your foot and stomp the life out of it.

“These two morons should be severely punished.”

Even if they meant it as a funny hoax, the damage is done, their lives are pretty hellish right now.

The family is being harassed by the media and the Marine is being harassed and kept in a safe place by the Corp while the investigation is taking place.

This is a global story already and even if it was just a joke, the initial images won’t be removed from the world’s memory even if that turns out to be the case.

The other thing that struck me was there are no markings on the guy’s uniform.

You're right. And the guys here also have their names and service branch on their IBA...I don't see any on his.

This is such a fake.

No problem, it was a busy thread earlier and it is easy to misconstrue what is written when you try and keep up.

That’s a variation on the smear used against our Vietnam vets. “They had it so rough, that’s why they raped women and murdered babies.”

This is not what our Marines are. Only a POS would say it is.

In other news; nearly 3000 children will be murdered in abortion mills in the US alone today.

Now back to being outraged by the stupid and cruel action of one young man and a young dog.

You speak as if none of us are capable of caring for more than one thing over the span of our lives.

This is all over the news. All the evidence needs to be compiled into one good post we can comment on all the news articles with. The news is spreading this around like it is real. Dan Rather syndrome. I’ll drop an email to Matt Drudge.

Mark, ping. See the last dozen or so posts. This is fake yet all the MSM is running with it like it is real. Want to scoop them?

If you look at a previous post (somewhere around 136 I believe) you’ll see it may not be a dog at all but a toy. Also, look at the previous dozen or so posts by Allegra, Dirtboy and myself. It looks like a complete hoax.

Baghdad ZOO IS A DRAW AGAIN

With the help of U.S. troops, a sanctuary that was damaged and depleted by the onset of the war is revived.

By Ann M. Simmons

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

December 30, 2007

BAGHDAD — Capt. Amy Cronin never had a pet. Before deploying to Iraq, she didn’t even really know much about animals.

But in 15 months, Cronin and her unit, the 15th Brigade Support Battalion, have gone from providing logistics and supplies to U.S. troops to helping refurbish an animal clinic, building horse stables and constructing new habitats for bears and porcupines at the Baghdad Zoo.

“It’s really satisfying,” said Cronin, 28, from Boiling Springs, Pa. “Typically support soldiers don’t get to interact with Iraqis as much as infantry would. And this gives me the satisfaction of seeing the direct results of my work.”

That has included projects to resuscitate the zoo, in a lush 3-square-mile park in the heavily fortified Green Zone, which also includes the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition forces, the Iraqi parliament and other key administrative buildings. It used be among the largest animal sanctuaries in the Middle East.

The zoo had received assistance from U.S. civil affairs units, engineers and international animal aid agencies since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003. But some of the quarters for animals needed to be rebuilt and the park’s aesthetics needed improvement before it could be turned into a haven where Baghdad residents could retreat from the violence on the streets.

“We’re not making sure that people have water and other supplies [with this assignment], but we are making sure that people have a place to relax and have fun,” said Lt. Col. Jeffrey Vieira, the unit’s commander.
