Schwarzenegger denounces 'outrageous' homeschooling ruling
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/7/2008 | Jill Tucker and Bob Egelko

(03-07) 13:37 PST SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger promised today to ensure that parents have the right to homeschool their children, after a state appeals court ruling severely restricted the practice in California.

"Every California child deserves a quality education and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children," the governor said in a statement. "Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education. This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."

An estimated 166,000 children are homeschooled across the state.

The ruling by the Second District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles said all children ages 6 to 18 must attend public or private school full-time until graduation from high school or be tutored at home by a credentialed teacher.

The Southern California case stemmed from a child welfare dispute involving the children of Phillip and Mary Long of Lynwood (Los Angeles County). The couple's eight children have been home-schooled by Mary Long, who holds no teaching credential. The children were also enrolled in a private school through an independent study program, which included quarterly home visits. Although the case did not involve the question of the children's truancy, the court decision broadly addressed the legality of homeschooling in California while specifically ruling that the Long family's situation violated state law.

It is worse than outrageous. It is STALINIST. These adademia libeal socialist scum can take their extortionist tactics somewhere else.

Remember that outlawing homeschools is the same instinct that has them banning private healthcare also if they pass ‘sociaized healthcare

He’s not as “liberal” as people think. This is a common sense cause, and he is correct.

Have you ever looked at the kind of ridiculous junk you have to go through to be certified as a teacher? It has little or nothing whatever to do with any realistic qualifications for teaching.

There are various helpful guides to homeschooling, but that's quite a different matter from being certified by some nutball school of education.

166,000 children homeschooled? That's beautiful.

The credentials are called "parent."

My direct experience with getting teaching credentials is that it is a costly, time-consuming process that is frustrating beyond belief for someone who is reasonably intelligent. The classes required primarily exist to provide employment for those who got their PhD in “Education”.

I found that about 1 in 10 classes required to acquire a teaching credential is worthwhile. That one class is, again based on my direct experience, typically a class on different ways to approach teaching a concept (in my case the methods class was in math).

I got so fed up with it, I decided to get a job as a software engineer.

All kidding aside, let’s give Ahnold some credit here. The leftiest of the lefties on the Left coast keep trying to slip this one by in deference to the teachers’ unions.

They absolutely abhor homeschooling and any challenge to their control over “the children”. We must resist and overcome at every opportunity.

Follow the $$. The leftist socialists/unions want to extort more taxes for public schools. Arnold knows that if homeschoolers are persecuted that they will pick up and move to another state and so goes their tax $$. Can anyone say ‘Michigan?
