Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia has accepted a presidential nomination from the nation's third-largest political party and GOP officials say that could mean trouble for their party in the fall election.
The Libertarian Party has selected Barr, also a former federal prosecutor, as their candidate, and Republicans think he could siphon off votes from their party's presumptive nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
Though is bid is definitely a long shot, Barr - who made a name for himself in leading the U.S. House's impeachment of President Bill Clinton - could exploit unease felt by traditional conservatives leery of McCain.
Some say Barr probably won't garner more than 4 percent of the total vote, but that could be enough in some states to take too many votes away from McCain.
Top Democratic strategists are happy, however, because they believe any votes Barr gets will come from McCain, not from Democratic nominee-in-waiting Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

This is the same Bob Barr who says Bill Clinton was a better POTUS than George W. Bush.
Bob Barr is a total nut-case.

On the other hand, McCain could marginalize Barr by paying attention to his conservative base. His change of mind on drilling for our own oil is a good start. His pledge to Hispanics to seek a new immigration bill isn’t.

Yo!
If Barr had a brain in the his head or some ‘beans’,
Clinton could have been history much earlier.
What is it with these dudes from GA.?
Newt... Barr...
What the hell are they thinking?
Love Newt’s petition though.

How elitist of the GOP to act as the standard bearer of and for voters by which they consider any other party as inferior. The GOP needs to wake up and realize Conservatives are not going to support a party who appeals more to socialists with each passing election and then has the unmitigated gall to demand conservatives blindly follow the GOP. They sound and behave more like their socialist Democrat brethren all the time. The Republicans have created their own predicament and have only themselves to blame.

The ACU 98% ratingm GOA/NRA/SAF A rating Barr who worked with the ACLU on Privacy cases stemming from FedGov over reach due to the misnamed "USAPatriot Act"?
If we had a few more "nutcases" like him, we wouldn't be sliding into socialist oblivion.

McCain’s recent comments on energy are the only sensible thing I’ve heard him say for as long as I can remember. Yes, it is encouraging, but he’s still wrong on almost everything else.

Why would he do that all of a sudden?
He won’t. He’ll lose the election and if Barr pulls enough votes to make that happen JM can see the reason he’s not president every time he looks in the mirror.

Regardless of Barr’s actions, the real spoiler this year (and a massive one at that) is John McCain, substituting for a real Conservative. There will be no Conservative on the slate this year. There won’t even be a moderate on the slate. We’ve to two whacked out lefties trying to out left the other.

Oh, goodness gracious. The GOP legislature of GA looked like a bunch of asshats when they pursued that issue with TN recently.

“Some say Barr probably won't garner more than 4 percent of the total vote, but that could be enough in some states to take too many votes away from McCain.”
Barr will more than likely pull enough votes from McCain in much the same way as Perot did from Bush 41 thereby enabling Clinton to win POTUS. At one time I was a fan of Barr but somewhere along the way he must have tripped and whacked his head on a rock or something. He have turned into a real Loony Tune for sure...
