:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Critical Threats: Blank When None
Pentagon Makes Fighting Extremism Top Priority

Seven years after the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pentagon on Thursday officially named "the long war" against global extremism as its top priority and pledged to avert any conventional military threat from China or Russia through dialogue.

The Defense Department, in a new national defense strategy, also emphasized the need to subordinate military operations to "soft power" initiatives to undermine Islamist militancy by promoting economic, political and social development in vulnerable corners of the world.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he hoped the change would help establish permanent institutional support for counterinsurgency skills acquired in Iraq and Afghanistan within a defense community heavily skewed in favor of expensive conventional and strategic modernization programs. Read More

“Somali pirates free two Germans”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Two Germans kidnapped by pirates off the coast of Somalia and held captive for five weeks have been released.

The couple, named only as 63-year-old Jurgen K and his companion, 51-year-old Sabine M, were sailing through the Gulf of Aden when they were seized.
A ransom worth $1m (600,000 euros; £500,000) was reportedly paid to secure their release.

Speaking to reporters, the president of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland apologised for their experience.

Yacht ransacked

Adde Muse vowed that if the Puntland authorities captured the pirates behind the kidnap they would be jailed or executed.

“We are really sorry for what happened,” Mr Muse said during in Bosasso.
“We put a lot of effort towards their release and I wish to thank everyone who helped.”

The couple - who were beaten and given very little to eat during their ordeal - appeared dishevelled and upset during the news conference and were unable to comment.

During the kidnap the couple’s yacht - en route to the Thai coast - was ransacked. The pair were then taken to the northern Somali region by speedboat.”

Coalition Forces in Afghanistan Capture 3 Militants

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2008 – Coalition forces in Afghanistan captured three suspected militants yesterday during an operation designed to disrupt terrorist networks in Paktika province, military officials said.

As part of the operation, coalition troops searched compounds in Urgun district targeting a militant responsible for rocket attacks against coalition forces.

In other news, a terrorist was killed and an Afghan woman from the Zarghun Shah district was medically evacuated, officials said. The evacuee as injured Aug. 9 during a coalition forces’ operation to disrupt militant activities in Paktika province.

The operation targeted a militant who has attacked Afghan and coalition forces and is linked to foreign fighter operations in the area.

Coalition forces identified the targeted militant maneuvering near the compound and killed him in an air strike.

Coalition forces then identified a separate militant group maneuvering against them and responded with small-arms fire. It was during this engagement that the woman, who was moving with the militant group, was injured. Another woman and four children were unharmed.

The injured woman’s condition required immediate medical evacuation. Coalition forces coordinated for a male family member to travel to the hospital. Coalition medical personnel immediately treated the woman’s injuries at the scene and transported her to a coalition medical facility for further care.

During the operation, coalition forces discovered and confiscated several pieces of military equipment, weapons, and ammunition.

Qaeda deputy Zawahiri releases video in English

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second-in-command to Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, has released his first English-language video call for jihad in Pakistan, the US-based IntelCenter said Sunday.

The message was aired on Pakistan’s ARY television network, IntelCenter said in a statement, adding that it marked “the first official message ever ... in which he speaks English.”

Zawahiri “calls for the people to support jihad in Pakistan and lists a litany of grievances against the Pakistani government and US involvement there,” said IntelCenter, which monitors extremist websites and communications....

China’s Uighur rebels switch to suicide bombs
Times Online ^ | August 11, 2008 | Richard Lloyd Parry
Posted on August 10, 2008 10:43:33 PM PDT by cmdjing

Suicide pipe bombers made a dozen attacks on police stations, government offices and businesses yesterday as Muslim separatists in the far northwest of China stepped up their Olympics bombing campaign.

At least 11 people died in the raids, which took place before dawn in Kuqa, an oasis city on the northern edge of the Taklimakan desert in the predominantly Muslim region of Xinjiang. Ten of the dead were reported to be attackers, three of whom appear to have blown themselves up to avoid capture.

It was an unprecedented event in China, which has no history of suicide bombing, and a grave escalation of the deteriorating security situation in one of its most tense and isolated areas.

Last night checkpoints sealed off the road to the police headquarters where attackers detonated a wagon filled with explosives at 2.30am, killing a civilian guard and injuring two police. According to the Xinhua news agency, the police fired back, killing one of the attackers and capturing two after a fourth killed himself with his bomb.

Half an hour earlier, an explosion blew out windows in a row of businesses. The owner of one café, where people were drinking at the time of the explosion, said: “Suddenly there was a big bang. The customers and I just ran away. When I looked back, my shop was totally destroyed.”

At 8.30am, police cornered five of the alleged attackers under a market stall. Two were shot dead as they threw their bombs while the other three blew themselves up. There were also attacks on a local government building and the premises of a trade organisation. A curfew was imposed and businesses in Kuqa county were ordered to close as police hunted for attackers, who, said Xinhua, had used bombs made from pipes, gas canisters and containers ofliquidgas.

“Almost Infamous”
By Thomas Joscelyn
The Weekly Standard | Monday, August 11, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN about Salim Hamdan, an admitted driver for Osama bin Laden who was convicted on charges of supporting al Qaeda by a military jury at Guantanamo Bay earlier this week. Said Boujaadia, the suspected terrorist who was captured with Hamdan in Afghanistan in late 2001, has received far less attention. In some ways, Boujaadia’s story is more intriguing.

Like Hamdan, Boujaadia was once a detainee at Gitmo. But Boujaadia never received the high-profile trial Hamdan did. Instead, Boujaadia was repatriated to his native Morocco in May of this year—more than one year after authorities at Gitmo authorized his transfer. Boujaadia was held at Gitmo as a witness for Hamdan’s trial, and when his role there ended Moroccan authorities took custody of him. But, Boujaadia’s transfer does not mean he has been deemed an innocent. According to the last public accounts of his case, Moroccan authorities were investigating Boujaadia’s plethora of ties to al Qaeda and global terrorism. Indeed, according to unclassified files produced by the U.S. government at Gitmo, the Moroccans have much to investigate.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080810-07
Aug. 10, 2008

IA, MND-N Soldiers discover IEDs in school
Multi-National Division – North PAO

DIYALA PROVINCE, Iraq – A patrol of Iraqi Army and Multi-National Division- North Soldiers discovered several improvised explosive devices in a school before it could detonate in the village of Tahwilla Aug. 9.

“This in another despicable example of the anti-Iraqi insurgency knowing no boundaries in its cruelty,” said Col. Pat White, Commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Multi-National Division -North. “To rig up a school with explosives in order to potentially kill school children sets another low for these criminals.”

An explosive ordnance disposal team investigated the IEDs and did a controlled detonation on the visible explosives, then called in an air strike to destroy any remaining explosives left in the school. The Diyala province is one of the poorest in Iraq, and the loss of the Tahwilla village school will be a tremendous blow for the area.

Iraqi and Coalition forces give a high priority to protecting civilians and private property. They were successful in disposing of the enemy’s weapons and supplies.

“The criminals were looking for a spectacular event, but ISF and CF foiled their efforts,” said Maj. Wayne Marotto, a spokesman for the 2nd BCT, 1st Armored Division. “The operations in northern Iraq will continue to expand the Government of Iraq’s capability to increase essential services and reconstruction to villages like Tahwilla.”

The Iraqi Army, establishing a long-term presence in Tahwilla, will work with provincial officials to develop a way ahead to replace the school.
