I’m told by a McCain aide that the teleprompter operator mistakenly rolled through the applause lines throughout the speech. So he rolled over the first two lines of the next paragraph after applause. But she was unfazed by it.
The operator rolls a VERY sensitive wheel that scrolls text on a 6' x 6' white-on-black screen, while listening to the speaker in headphones, hooping to keep the words being spoken next to a large arrow.
It isn't easy to master the touch - OTOH, once you mess up once you ought to be able to stop scrolling when you hear the applause.
The Berlin Wall fell because it looked 20 years into the future and didn’t want to be around when Sarah Palin came looking for it.
How do these idiots get original access to every high security event and Congressional hearing?

The teleprompter I saw on tuesday is dead in front of the speakers.
Uhhh....I'm not an expert but the operator has both audio feeds (probably not necessary tonight) and has a comfortable screen to view that replicates what the teleprompter displays. They can actually go backwards if necessary. Whether this was purposeful or not the fact remains that the operator is fully informed and there is not much excuse for constant error if that was the case.
They were probably wiping drool off the poor teleprompter machine afterward.
Maybe they didn't get the applause she did.
She had a printed copy of the speech on the podium for backup.
“Breaking News: The Teleprompter operator has disappeared. Sarah Palin was seen picking shredded pieces of a Teleprompter Operators Union t-shirt out of her teeth.”

It was interesting though... Watching NBC’s brief coverage, they came on at 10:00 when Rudy came out. I never noticed anything unusual. But when Sarah Palin started her speech, there was a split second delay between the audio and the video that I didn’t recall being there for Rudy. It was just enough to distract an uninterested person’s attention from the speech.
Her broadcast background saved her here. Prompter foul ups happen all the time in the industry, and on-air talent know how to deal with it w/o the audience knowing.

The folks at Fox News this morning were saying that the teleprompter was speeding through Rudy’s speech also, running through “paragraphs at a time”.
It's his job to keep it synchronized. That is why he has the title "Teleprompter Operator". Don't make excuses, just do your job.
Yep, he should try doing an easier job, like being a "Community Organizer."

Why even have an operator. Just need a button on the podium and the speaker can press to start and stop the scoll. Damn...I should get a patent!
