Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Apparently some part of "Leave" wasn't clear.

Ours blinked about 15 minutes ago, too.

Just call Obama, he says that he can lower the seas and save the world, this is his chance to prove it.
“Hooters Galveston has had roof blown off.....”
Topless Hooters! WooHoo, Texas knows how to party!
I’m pretty sure one of the tricks is to get your boards before the day of the storm. I had my gas, water, and food laid in when Ike was still in the atlantic, I think. Like several other posters, I saw it threatening the east coast of fla and thought, this thing is going to cross right over Fl and make a beeline for us. I didn’t really believe them when they said a NOLA landfall. Then when it shifted to us, and kept shifting, I thought it plausibly might keep moving south, but in my heart I had a feeling this one had our name on it.
The winds are really picking up now. I had my first big gust with something going bump on the roof.
I’ve got to go take a shower.
Our house is right at 6 behind the fire station. Second tier.
“Are you doing okay?”
I’m ok, I’m outta there...as for my house, that has yet to be seen...
Thanks for asking.
If the power goes out and there is no TV or FR we will have to ......... gulp ........ talk to each other.
Thank goodness we have puppies!
We evacuated Houston during Rita and headed for Austin before the big freeway jam of evacuees. We stayed in Austin until Rita left the Houston area. We had trouble finding gas in Austin.
More people on Galveston trying to find “higher ground”
It’s just to darn early for the power to go out!!
Neil Frank is great.. hurricane
wiz in FL for years.
Oh my. Lord have mercy.
Hang in there! Remind me where along the area you are? Montrose?? (sorry, old brain here)
Not accurate. He said it is estimated that 90,000 people did not evacuate from the coastal area and that 10,000 of those are in Galveston.
