Floyd founder Wright dies at 65

Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died at the age of 65 from cancer.

There’s always somebody that likes it. There’s also always somebody that like brussels sprouts. Final Cut stinks.

Wright was the real music behind the music for Pink Floyd. His riffs and openings for some of the greatest hits have always been over-shadowed by Waters, and Gilmour. The best mixes in the studio were under his hands.

When I took up piano to supplement my guitar playing, a lot of the piano work for Floyd was part of those lessons. Simple chording, couple with complex changes and riffs were a hallmark of his legacy.

The riff on the Hammond B-3 just before the final verse of Eclipse is a great moment in Rock and Roll history.

During the seventies (My college years when still colleges taught science) This was my favorite rock band other than the Moody Blues. I use to yell at my girl friend when I wanted to listen to the entire Dark Side of the Moon album and not just the song “Money” which was my least favorite song on it! Whish You Were Here was also a favorite but my roommate kept scratching it! I like the Wall, hated Meddle, but I realy like Momentary Lapse of Reason.

The Dark Side of the Moon LP is one of my most cherished albums of all time. I listened to it so much back then I almost wore the grooves out.

More than anything else I can think of, music has been an integral part of my life. Music sparks such profound memories of times and places where that music was a part. For most of the 70’s and early 80’s, Pink Floyd was THE music that escorted me thru high school, college, and into the ‘real world’. There must have been 4 or 5 copies each of “Dark Side of the Moon”, “Animals”, Wish You Were Here”, etc. that I literally wore the grooves off of.

There is no way to ever repay the contribution music made to moments in my life. Music is a bigger gift than anything else I can think of.

Of course my favorite PF album is (without a doubt) Piper. Saucer has some really good work by Wright with a smattering of Syd left over in it.

One in the morning, on any day of the week, in my buddies milk truck driving down Mulholland to Malibu or county line with Pink Floyd blaring on our Craig 6 inch Speakers to do a little surfing. A gallon of Gallo and waking up underneath a lifeguard station.

That is how I’ll remember Richard Wright and Pink Floyd.
