Out West, Obama Faces Gun Battle

DENVER, Colo. -- Colorado is home to more than 100,000 dues-paying members of the National Rifle Association, all of whom should have received THIS MAILER sometime in the last week, which says he would be "the most anti-gun president in American history," and refers gun rights enthusiasts to the website GunBanObama.com.

Obama is aware of this of course, and he's on the radio airwaves out here -- as well as, according to readers of Ben Smith at Politico -- Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland. Virginia, Ohio, and New Hampshire.

The ad features former Washington Redskin Ray Schoenke, who helms the American Hunters and Shooters Association, which styles itself as a moderate alternative to the NRA, while the NRA deems it to be a bogus bunch of gun-grabbers.

"It's important to me that our next President protects our Second Amendment rights to own guns and defend ourselves," says Schoenke. "Barack Obama and John McCain will both make sure we can keep our guns. But what about keeping our jobs? Barack's got a real plan that invests in creating jobs here at home and cuts taxes a thousand bucks for working families. John McCain? I saw a lot of cheap shots in my day, but McCain's false attacks on Obama are just a fake to hide the ball. His plan sells out American workers. McCain will keep giving tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas. And he'll look the other way while China breaks our trade deals. It's the same old Bush playbook. Look, when the coach loses eight years in a row, you don't bring him back for a ninth season! We just can't afford more of the same."

Listen to the ad HERE.

Obama's facing some tough skeptics out here, though, and comments like the ones he made in Duryea, Penn., earlier this month don't necessarily help.

"There’s rumors going around that you're going to take away the guns," said a hunter at a glass factory.

"I think this is a great question so I just want to clear it up," Obama said. "Because I know there are probably some sportsmen here in the audience. I believe in the Second Amendment, and if you are a law-abiding gun owner, you have nothing to fear from an Obama administration! I mean this has been this has been peddled again and again…

"I’ll be honest, and I’m sure there’s some NRA members here," Obama continued. "Their general attitude is 'Look, we don’t want anything, and if you even breathe the word "gun control" or "gun safety," then you must want to take away everybody’s guns.' Well, that’s just not true...

"The bottom line is this. If you’ve got a rifle, you’ve got a shotgun, you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it away. Alright? So they can keep on talking about it but this is just not true. And by the way, here’s another thing you’ve got to understand. Even if I wanted to take it away, I couldn’t get it done. I don’t have the votes in Congress."

That "I don't have the votes in Congress" line has ricocheted around the country…

McCain had the most detailed pro-gun section on his website out of all the Republican Primary contenders . That section is still up on his website which tells me that it wasn’t just “ red meat “ for the Primary voters ... It’s a good sign ..

And yet a careful inspection of his record on 2nd amendment, 1st amendment, and a whole host of issues shows he has real problems with the conservative positions on these issues and regularly chooses to run to the left to support his "Maverick" moniker.

Now if your point is he is better than Obama, I can easily grant you that but my original post on this thread still stands.

McCain has regularly run to the left of GWB, way left!

Not on the Gun Issue . This thread is about gun control . McCain has been consistent in his opposition to the AWB and AWB-2 . Bush said he would support it if it made it to his desk ...it was a wink and a nod to get elected , but he still said it .

McCain has not shied away from his opposition to the AWB-2 . McCain has indeed ,in the past, flirted with closing the so-called “ gun show loophole “ , but that was the extent of it .

Oh and please don’t forget , Bush signed into law McCain / Feingold when he could have stopped it in his tracks .

Take it from someone in the used car business for a long time. Never say “honestly” the second you say it, you imply everything before was BS. Always use “frankly” Thats a word you should look out for.....

I noticed that he didn’t say anything about being able to keep your handgun.

I think that one thing those of us in the gun rights movement have failed to do is to point out to sportsmen how tough the rats make it for them to hunt and fish. Let’s face it, there are probably about 30% of gun owners who really don’t care about the right to bear arms so long as they can keep their hunting guns and maybe a pistol for self-defense. The thing we need to point out to these folks is that the rats are a nightmare when it comes to hunting and fishing regulations as well.

Obama picked Biden. McCain picked Palin. That should tell you who really supports guns

McCain was against the DC gun ban even though he would not win a single vote there. That proves that he really believes in the 2nd amendment...it’s not about hunting. It’s about freedom from tyranny.

It was John McCain and not Sarah Palin who said:

“The Second Amendment isn’t some archaic custom that matters only to rural Americans, who find solace in firearms out of frustration with their economic circumstances. The Second Amendment is unique in the world. It guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms. To argue anything else is to reject the clear meaning of our Founding Fathers.”

I would ask the Obama campaign to list the specific pro-gun bills Obama voted FOR while in either the Illinois or U.S. Senate.

Stupid is as stupid does. If he always votes againsts guns, why would anyone think he would be pro-gun as president?

Now, apply the same test to McCain.

You’re asking where in the hell is the NRA. That’s pathetic. The NRA is wondering where in the hell is the 75 million gun owners who don’t do anything except sit on the sidelines.

There are four million NRA members. There are forty million members of the antigun AARP.

Yeah, a yearly membership costs $35, its not going to break the bank.

In the meantime, maybe our side needs to do a little of this stealth (i.e. false) advertising. We could have a group that calls itself abortion on demands for America. This group could claim that McCain wants to have as many abortions on demand as possible. Thats about the same integrity as this “American and Hunters Shooting Association” has.

That ad is playing in Nevada as well. Heard it this morning on the way into work. Barry Hussein is coming to Nevada this week and I can’t understand it. He’s not going to Union rich Vegas but is instead headed out to Elko. That is bigtime ranching and cowboy country. That county usually votes 70-75% Republican. Maybe he hopes to bring it down to a more respectable 68-73%.

The comments at the source seem to acknowledge what he would do if he had the votes.

Believe it or not. BHO voted for a ban on gun confiscations during emergencies like Katrina.

"In 2006, he voted with an 84 to 16 majority…to prohibit confiscation of firearms during an emergency, but that is his only pro-gun vote in Springfield or Washington."

This is why they can’t understand how to deal with Palin.

What you see is what she is. Authenticity.

I’d really like to bait them into exposing what they really believe, but they ARE smarter than that.

Dear BHO,

I own this:

Do you have a problem with this fact?

Sincerely,
