Analysis: McCain wins on points (BBC's take)
The BBC ^ | 9/27/2008 | Kevin Connolly

It was the most important single showdown in the most expensive campaign in the history of democracy, so it was bound to begin with edgy, cautious manoeuvring and end with rival claims of victory. Neither Mr McCain nor Mr Obama was compelling on the economy

And indeed that is exactly how it did unfold - with the spin doctors for Barack Obama and John McCain all claiming that their man had carried the evening.

That’s because they’re not trying to influence the outcome.

If the liberal tampon BBC says McCain won, it is devastating to the democrats. Anyone that watched that debate and can not say McCain won is 50 cards short of a deck.

What was the telling excerpt, if I may ask?

My wife and I watched the debate and we both thought it was pretty flat. Maybe my expectations for McCain were unreasonably high and unreasonably low for Obamuuuuuuuuuuuuh, but I was afraid that undecideds were going to say that Obamuuuuuuuuuuuuuh won. Seems we have a split decision. I will be ecstatic if McCain gets a bump in the polls, but I don’t see this debate as being very meaningful one way or another.

It takes just one thing in people's minds to turn it into a rout. Obambi has now realized McCain is a formidable opponent.

I agree, and make no mistake BBC is a liberal outfit.

I think it was clear McCain won, and I’m usually cynical.

“But in the foreign policy section of the debate, it seemed to me John McCain emerged a clear winner, although there were individual issues like Iraq on which the Democratic contender more or less held his own.

The Republican was punchy and aggressive, accusing Mr Obama more than once of naivete, and at one point even saying “Oh please” as he dismissed his opponent’s attitude towards dealing with Iran’s aggressive rhetoric towards Israel.”

Wow!! When an uber-liberal organization like the Beeb gives McCain kudos, that’s just incredible!!!! :-) And I love the description of McCain ripping Ubama a new one—one of my favorite lines of the night! :-)

The foreign MSM does what our own home-grown MSM will NEVER do!

It's particularly glaring because this is the BBC, and the BBC is a charter member of the 0bama moonbat fanclub.

Yeah, after they play the ad of the One endorsing McCain as the most qualified presidential candidate over and and over and over again!

It appeared to me that, at the beginning of the debate, McCain was trying to portray himself as a consensus builder, someone who can work with both sides of the aisle, as opposed to Obama who consistently attacks Republicans. I don’t think that McCain wanted to come across as laying all of the blame on the Democrats for the financial mess, since he is still trying to work with all parties to craft a solution to the nation’s financial problem. It seemed to me that this was an attempt by McCain to appeal to the undecided moderates and independents, since he didn’t need to appease the Conservatives who are going to vote for him. I am not sure McCain succeeded.

I thought McCain did much better in the second half of the debate when he focused more on policy and his experience.

I thought Obama came across as someone who can be rattled. His facial expressions and head shaking when McCain jabbed him reminded me of Al Gore’s antics in the first debate with Bush - amateurish in a diplomatic setting.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed but, while McCain mentioned the need to protect Israel and Jews several times, Obama did not mention either even once unless I missed it. The debate was supposed to be about foreign policy and Obama doesn’t even mention the only true friend that America has in the Middle East? Will that go unnoticed by American Jews?

Although Obama was more eloquent, I thought that McCain got the better of the “quips” – “hard to reach across the aisle when you are that far left” – “so Iran says they are going to wipe Israel off the face of the earth and we say no you’re not?”

As I anticipated, Obama won on style and McCain won on substance. The loser was the moderator.

I guess we will find out whether style or substance is more important to the majority of the American electorate on November 4th.

What do you mean by style? In 2000, people said Bush won on style because he looked more relax and engaging, while Gore won on substance. Today, I would say McCain won both: on substance, especially on the second part, and on style because he looked more sincere and relax, with ability to inject humors now and then while attacking 0bama.

At several points Obama seemed to be rattled by McCain but managed to regain his composure. I didn't see McCain getting rattled at all and the media is always going on about his temperament. Even from the opening comment by McCain expressing concern for Ted Kennedy being hospitalized briefly for a seizure earlier in the day was much more “style” than Barack could muster all night.

“Rattled” doesn’t cover it.

Several times he looked like he was just *barely* containing a fit of full-blown bargain basement histrionics.

[and I loved his “You did not!/You did too!” retorts...how utterly ‘3rd grade’]

If BBC says a win...even a slight win...for McCain...then its a shocker.

Obama needs points and he’s barely got six weeks to pick up the necessary points.

Several times 0bama said the Bush administration was closer to his policies than McCain’s. I don’t think that will play well with the insane democrat base. I listened to the debate at work on the radio and even the office liberal said McCain won.

Agreed. I wonder what the moonbats thought of his praise of a missle defense shield and the need to rein in spending. I mean - here was the most left wing Democrat sounding like a conservative Republican! And if this is a center-left country, why hit mostly right wing notes? You're right, we're not going to see a resurgence of liberalism. Both candidates played to the center-right mood of the country.
