Republican John McCain has a third and final chance to debate his way back into contention when he faces his hard-charging White House rival Barack Obama in New York later Wednesday.
...At the weekend, McCain promised to Virginia supporters he would "whip" his Democratic opponent's "you know what" during the evening debate starting at 0100 GMT at Hofstra University on Long Island.

I’ll believe it when I see it (or hear it — I don’t think I can stand watching another debate so I’m planning on the radio tonight).
Despite the naysayers, you assessment is correct. The other, perhaps more "preferable" options or avenues of attack, e.g. clearly going on the offensive in naming names and pointing out the fact that it was McCain's "good friends" in the US Congress who set the regulatory rules (CRA, etc.) which directly caused the economic debacle, these options have all been squandered due to McCain's weird, narcissistic "maverick code of ethics".
Bottom line: the GOP fouled its own nest by nominating this "aconservative" clown, and now it has to sleep in that nest.
And, for those "who have eyes and are willing to see", it is obvious that this has been the plan of the establishment powers that be all along.
The Replicrat/Demopublican two-party cartel has served them well, but both parties have always been simply useful tools which can and will be liquidated when circumstances require it. The Republican Party will be first, and the Democrat Party under Obamapuppet will be morphed into... something else...
I cannot watch it tonight.
I’m starting to get the same queasy feeling I always get when I try to watch Bush give a speech.
I will vote for the man - but I won’t watch him.
It might drive me to drink.
Right—I don’t want McCain to be an attack dog-I just don’t want him to be a lap dog.
He’s done lousy in the two debates in terms of being able to convey his case to all the undecided morons out there, and I don’t want to hear anyone say how he wasn’t able to because of the debate format-Gee, the deck is stacked against him-well, duh.
He needs to MAKE things happen, and do it gracefully enough so it convinces people. Reagan did it, Palin did it, after the MSM set her up to be Quayle II —hell, much as I hate Clinton, HE did it. I didn’t buy his BS but he sold it to plenty of folks when by all rights he was toast.IF McCain can’t after all these years as a politician, why is he out there?
He needs to put the smack down on O-he doesn’t have to go nuclear to do it. Sometimes you use the broadsword-sometimes the scalpel. The key phrase is “whatever works”.
O has a boxcar full of baggage and Mac needs to tag him. If not a one-punch KO tonight , at least a bloody nose.
Nice try, though.
Cheers!
This bitch does that.
Registering Mickey Mouse. Everyone gets that.
Cheating. Everyone gets that.
"God D@MN AMERICA!" is worse than even the lies spread about Falwell. Everyone gets that.
Then point out that the last Dem President to cut taxes, was Kennedy. About the time Obama was born. (And Bill Clinton promised to cut taxes too.)
Hold Abortion, Louis Farrakhan, and the endorsement of Fidel Castro in reserve. But the latter has probably moved Florida out of Obama's reach.)
Cheers!
I was at his rally last Saturday in Davenport, IA. His speech was OK, but there was very little fire and brimstone, and at one point he stressed that he was the best person to reach across party lines to the other side. He just doesn’t get it.
Let’s face it - McCain has lost this one. We’re now looking at the election of an inexperienced, arrogant, anti-American socialist, one who will be in a position to appoint liberal Supreme Court justices and direct social policy for the next four years.
Thanks, John. Thanks for everything.
I'm going to see what happens tonight. But, the chances that you are spot on are increasing daily with his performance.
He seems to think the art of compromise is a trait of a great leader. We need insprired. We need a clear vision. No one wants to see how the sausage is made.
It should have been understood that Obama’s handlers would use the time given to polish their candidate, instruct him on how to handle himself properly and mold him into a candidate that the voters would take seriously. Because of McCain's fumbling, many voters are now willing to give Obama a chance, something they weren't willing to do before.
I still want McCain to win, mainly because I absolutely despise Obama and what he stands for with every bone in my body - I just don't think it will happen.
LOL. Excellent impression. If you could pace around, panting heavily, it’d be perfect.
Although your point is well taken, it is probably too late now, alas, we have no other option. Every opportunity has been squandered and now we are left with something even more desperate than a hail Mary pass.
Those who advocate more of the same, but delivered with more eloquence and finesse, only play directly into Obama's hands because it makes him a plausible candidate. This is a Democrat year in the middle of a financial catastrophe any plausible Democrat who is not morally destroyed is going to get elected.
Great to see you here, CT, and I hope you are doing well. Thanks for your incisive commentary, as ever. Some significant element of the undecided will be swayed, I believe, by the uncertainty of who BO is really, especially regarding attachments to leftist and radical causes and people. Their (undecideds’) awareness of that is important, because most still understand that there is something wrong with socialism and the VN anti-war mentality. That awareness will dawn if it is not presented by rabid hand-waving, but by a relentless drumbeat in the periphery. It is necessary for McCain to be firm, not out of character, and, even, paternal and protective. (E.g., ‘these are things the American People need to be fully aware of.’)
To the extent that is portrayed and perceived as negative, you are right wrt the undecideds. I am more hopeful, not because of the zealots here, but because of McCain’s ability to be serious. Tonight will tell the tale.
“Like many who know nothing about winning elections you want John McCain to be an attack dog.”
McCain can win without being an attack dog. He might even have a better chance of winning if he’s not an attack dog. But he has almost NO chance of winning if he’s going to going to SAY he’ll be an attack dog again and again and again and then not do it.
I agree with you Allegra. I think the McCain is exactly where they want to be. It’s hard to imagine, but if McCain were ahead, the MSM would be acting even more squirrelly and more hateful to McCain. So, everything is hanging right now and he almost has it nailed down. I like to think Sarah is giving John some pointers on how to hand out the zingers with a snap and a smile. She is so good at it!
Personally, I refuse to get involved in any crystal ball gazing at this point. As I mentioned the other day, as long as our soldiers get up and put their uniforms on and perform their missions out in the field and miserable conditions they are faced with, I will try my best every day to get McCain and Palin elected and not give an inch. Our great military provide some mighty fine inspiration!
Let him have a good long nap this afternoon then pumped him full of Red Bull from when he wakes up til debate time.
I hope he does well tonight, but after the last debate, I will not be watching.
I will say a prayer for him, which will be as much for America’s future as anything else.
LOL! True. No need to even watch two liberals dance with each other on stage.
Maybe McCain can say something simple like-
“I don’t want to raise any taxes. It’s not the first thing I will look at.” You know, start easy and be clear. Then he can say, “I will look at the earmarks first and get rid of those. That alone will save X amount of money.” He can say that there is a tomorrow and we need to look ahead and not set policies to help the bailout that are going to hurt us in the future. In America we need to get back to rewarding success and hard work, not dishonesty and manipulation. I think McCain needs to hold up the Shining Light America because it is a basic principle that ties many together, whether or not there are policy differences.
