Election Day 2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 11/04/2008 2:33:06 PM PST by Jim Robinson

Edited on 11/04/2008 3:15:04 PM PST by Jim Robinson. [history]

Set your page results preference to 20:

1.) Click Account at the top of any of the latest posts pages.

2) Click My Preferences.

3.) Click 20 results per page under Browsing.

Disable unnecessary sidebars:

1.) Click Account at the top of any of the latest posts pages.

2.) Click Manage blocks.

3.) Disable as many sidebars as you can. I left only the Browse by Forum, Breaking News and Front Page News sidebars on mine. You can reconfigure them again after the elections rush is over.

Done.

But since you have direct access to the backend database I would just go ahead and make a global change for everyone to reduce your database query time and hung up web server threads.

Of course it may be too late to do that big of a query now with the load coming in :).

Just my 2 cents worth having dealt with thing like this for other database driven sites in my full time job...

Thanks for the tips and the site, Jim.

You’ve helped to people to network and get some stories “legs” this election. Without the web and talk radio, there election would not be this close. Even Obama’s “10 point lead” doesn’t seem that way to them now.

An Election Day Dirty Trick to Watch For: Distributed Denial-Of-Service Attacks

None of those steps will change the problems that I am seeing. Take a look at your logs. I bet they they are hitting your database very hard today. You need to block those IPs.

Drudge has no images on his site. I’m guessing all major sites are stripping down due to traffic

Jim, why don't you and John in your next up grade to FR allow us FReepers to chose the Forums we want to see when we chose to "Browse By Forum" when we click "Everything" or "Browse"?

Let each FReeper decide which Forums he/she is interested in seeing as a default setting.

I finally got my preferences changed. I don’t see that much improvement and it is still loading very slow for me. Also tried the beta site and no improvement there. Disappointing.

Hi! I clicked “20 results per page”, but my computer wants to hold on to 50. It won’t go to twenty, even after shutting down the computer, and re-opening it. Sigh. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much. I wouldn’t want to spend election-eve anywhere else but here.
