Today's American high school students are far likelier than those in the 1970s to believe they'll make outstanding spouses, parents and workers, new research shows.
They're also much more likely to claim they are "A" students with high IQs -- even though other research shows that today's students do less homework than their counterparts did in the 1970s.
The findings, published in the November issue of Psychological Science, support the idea that the "self-esteem" movement popular among today's parents and teachers may have gone too far, the study's co-author said.
"What this shows is that confidence has crossed over into overconfidence," said Jean Twenge, an associate professor of psychology at San Diego State University.
She believes that decades of relentless, uncritical boosterism by parents and school systems may be producing a generation of kids with expectations that are out of sync with the challenges of the real world.

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. Mankind will be "lovers of self....disobedient to parents....ungrateful...."
Lots of self-esteem, but Xtremely dum az a box of rox.
(Misspellings are intentional, so the kiddies out there can understand it)
Reality is going to slap these brainwashed and delusional children upside the head HARD in later years.
And you should get a participation ribbon for your post.
In other words, we have a budding generation of sociopaths.
In other words, they are full of themselves. Arrogant. Self-righteous. Know-it-alls. Their own gods. And all at such an early age. Who says says the public schools are a mess?
Liberals are going to force ALL of us to "manage expectations" for at least the next four years.
Correct.
Self-esteem is overrated. People with high self-esteem have no inecentive to change and they end up in a life of drugs. They will not handle failures well.
Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin are seen as successes, but for every successful invention, they had 10 failed inventions.
All hat and no cattle.
Bringing pop culture into this discussion... Anyone who has ever watched American Idol quickly realizes that this study is spot on. Those idiots really think they can sing, and their parents keep reinforcing this illusion.
I hate to say this but maybe a little ‘communism’ is exactly what this spoiled generation needs.
You have that right. The debate during Christmas will be about toys. The other 364 days will be about designer clothes and food.
You can see this attitude on that American Idol program. “People tell me I can really sing”.
I blame a lot of this on the schools and their failure to focus only on the “Three R’s”. All you have to do is believe really, really hard—and it comes true! Sure, Dorothy, just don’t forget to click your heels too.
Not for long.
It’s the “triumph of seeming.”
They’re going to need it now that they’ve helped head us on the downward path.
Will the “veil of puffery be rent”?
That is the question.
We’re doomed.
