Friends live on the hill above the town. Great place. The picture is nice, but it does not show the land fill which blocks 2/3s of the river. A few thousand years ago a landslide blocked the river. The water forced a path through on the south third, what you see in the picture.

The bridge seemed okay to me and of course there is a toll.

Years ago there were crusty old Republicans like Boise Penroes of PA and Roscoe Conkling of NY who fought in the ditch with the Democrats and usually prevailed! Today’s Republican “leaders” are just plain silly or naive to be charitable.

BS

There is no state tax here in Nevada and sales tax is in line or lower than other states, 7.75%

How can it be in the top four?

This article is only about sales taxes - which kind of misses the point. Nevada is still income-tax free, and thus way better than most states.

NEVADA? There is no personal income tax in Nevada

I caught that too. I call BS on this one

Clark county is by far the worse offender in terms of taxes but is not overboard, yet.

THis current economic disaster is going to change the future economic landscape of the USA

It will become clear in the coming years - the “Red” states will recover much faster, with a well-balanced economy of manufacturing, services, etc...

The “Blue” states will take much longer to recover. They will have stagnant job growth, declining populations, and of course, expanding Government. I live in a very “blue” state and our recessions for the last 30+ years have been deeper than the national average, and it takes much longer for us to recover from them.

At that point the “Red” states really must take advantage of this and assert their leadership role.

It makes me sick. They surround themselves with NVA types who are nearly as bad as the elitists on the left. They are wink and a nod “conservatives” who will quickly trash the base and conservative principles when ever convenient. We saw many of them raise their heads in attacks on Sarah Palin. God forbid she not be one of them from one of their schools running with their crowds. The disgusting behavior from the left was enough with out having it come from the right. I’ve never seen the left eat its own like that. Never and especially not over such silly crap. None of these critics came to Palin’s defense when she was being slandered and her family being mercilessly attacked.

Where was that bow tie wielding George Will? I swear I’ve always suspected Republicans who wear bow ties must have something wrong with them. Well maybe that is harsh since they do have good company, Pee Wee Herman, and Winston Churchill. I’ll leave it to you to determine which man they best emulate.

Don’t correct the information - :)

If most of the country thinks we are in the top four, they won’t move here.

“They left off some taxes. Here in New York, my property taxes on a $130,000 house (local taxes + school taxes) is about $5,000 a year. Our local sales taxes are 4.75% giving us a total sales tax rate of 8.75%. Take that, Connecticut!”

That’s obscene. New Jersey is the same way. They soak you so much in property tax that you’re almost paying in tax what you’d be paying in rent in many states - so what’s the point of owning a home at all?

I assumed that more than just income taxes went into that bucket. That is the total state tax burden.

I know I could live on 49,000 dollars but no way could I live on 15,400.

Cost of living is different in those two locations.

The highest state for state and local taxes when compared to income is Maine at well over 13%...

They tax everything. The legislature even tried a hiking tax dubbed the ‘walking around tax’ by opponents who got the idea laughed out of Augusta. Buy a car and one does not pay sales tax on the price but on the MSRP. The property tax on the same thing is then based on the blue book value year after year. Retirement..taxed to the max. Homes..but of course taxed.

“Don’t forget that one can live in WA (no income tax) and shop in OR (no sales tax). Same with WY and MT except there is a lot more driving involved.”

Yeah, but that is illegal. But considering that our new leadership on both the national and state levels are corrupt, and criminal. Most of our Congress cheats on their taxes, we have a new ethic. Rob, Cheat and Steal. It is approved by politicians who lead by example.

Your sales tax is quite high. Of course, tourists pay most of those taxes so I think the burden on residents is probably lower than the chart indicates.

Today’s Republican leaders prefer leading a minority than serving in a majority. That is why they have banished conservatives from the party. With conservatives they would be in a majority but not as the bosses. Thus they backstab conservatives and end up leading a minority party.

After disposing of all of the lawyers, we should start on the rinos.
