The original 1836 version of the fabled reading instruction books which for three-quarters of a century were used by four-fifths of all American school children. Some 120 million sets were sold. No other books ever had so much influence over so many children over such a long period.
McGuffey Second Reader 1879
God is Great and Good
____________
1. I know God made the sun
To fill the day with light;
He made the twinkling stars
To shine all through the night.
2. He made the hills that rise
So very high and steep;
He made the lakes and seas,
That are so broad and deep.
3. He made the streams so wide,
That flow through wood and vale;
He made the rills so small,
That leap down hill and dale.
4. He made each bird that sings
So sweetly all the day;
He made each flower that springs
So bright, so fresh, so gay.
5. And He who made all these,
He made both you and me;
Oh, let us thank Him, then,
For great and good is He.
I’m happy for your kids! Now...what about those who DON’T have what yours do?
Abandon ship!
Its a sinkin with all da rats on board!
Vouchers are a terrible idea, IMHO.
Opt-out from paying the local government school portion of property taxes is more consistent with parental rights, I think.
Churches and private charity should assist the poor in participating in private or home schooling. That money should not come from the government.
The time has come for seperation of school and state.
Right. The problem is that the Court has more and more disregarded history, law and precedent in order to great new principles of action. Justice Black, for instance, vested the term “separation of church and state” with a whole new meaning in 1947. The crazy quilt pattern of First Amendment law is owing to a conflict between reality and the court’s drive for power. Contrary to the common law tradition the courts seeks the overthrow of “is” by what they thinks “ought to be.” The opinion of a power elite overturns both law and tradition in the name of justice.
“My children have only gone to Christian schools, but Ill tell you its getting to the point where we just dont know how long we can continue to afford spending 18k/year”
I don’t think we’ll be able to afford a good private Christian school when the time comes - so we’re looking at other options.
I agree with you. there is no reasons millions of churches should sit empty SIX days a week.
We also need to make sure our schools are teaching CIVICS in grade school!
If we withdraw from the world, we withdraw from the "Great Commission" which is to preach the Gospel to the world.Fight against the foolish teachings of evolution theory, but don't stop going to public schools because they won't play "Silent Night."
First,the command to make disciples was given to mature believers, not children. The responsibility for education is given to the parents, especially fathers. I see no evidence in the New Testament or writings of the Early Church Fathers that Christian children attending pagan schools were a prime force for evangelism.
The decision to use state, private, private-Christian, or home schooling is intensely personal and the best choice may be different for different children at different stages. That said, to think of a Christian school as a state school with Bible added may be representative of some schools but is far from what is meant by a Christian education. A secular/naturalistic/materialistic philosophy has consequences far beyond teaching evolution and banning Silent Night, but actually affects every subject. Whatever choice of schools a parent makes, they are responsible for making sure the child is instructed in a Biblical world-view of every aspect of scholarship and life.
I used to think such as you but found that all the Christian folk I new sent their kids to expensive private schools and not necessarily for the Christian teaching but rather so their kids could more easliy become doctors/lawyers etc. This left a dearth of Christian kids in my children’s school. I sent the first one to public school and the second one to a private school - turns out the first is far more Christian orientated as the second one saw the hypocrasy of so called christians and ditched the baby out with the bath water.
From what I have seen homeschooling is the only option.
Mel
Of course if Christians decided on mass to send their kids to public schools and then protest what is wrong then we might see some change in the system.
I’m in the Pacific Northwest and homeschooling’s the only option good enough for my kiddos. It’s not so much the lack of God, although that’s a serious concern, it’s my desire to see them fully educated.
You shouldn’t let your children be used like this.
Christian or not, they are children and lacking the wisdom and strength that comes from being an adult Christian.
You are playing with fire my friend without the fire extinguisher.
Easier said than done. The only decent private school in this area stops at middle school.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
because, America has as strong a right to term itself as a judeo-christian nation, as that of islamic nations that demand the right to maintain the islamicy of their own nations. moo jmo imo
Do they have “Integrated” Christian schools in the US? Where a Church teaches the school, and the Gummint provides some funding in exchange for the school admitting some non-church students?
We have them here in NZ, and they are fantastic. As good as any private school, for a tiny fraction of the cost.
If I could find a good Christian school that would pay me what I make now, I'd jump in a second, and the school I work in has a lot of Christians in it. We pray together, we aren't afraid of putting REAL Christmas decorations up. But yikes, the crap from Sacramento....buncha boneheads steering the ship up there.
Yet, when push came to shove, not even K-12 sodomite indoctrination was enough to get this resolution passed. IOW, the SBC has gone on record as being cool with sodomy. After all, they don't mind it being taught to their children. Or should I say, they don't mind it enough to stop it, using the surest means at their disposal.
Well, if I were more charitable, perhaps I'd notice that it takes time to change public opinion. Perhaps I should take hope in Ernest Hemingway's description of how one goes bankrupt -- "first, very slowly, then very quickly." Perhaps there is a "tipping point" ahead that will disengage Christians from sacrificing their children to Moloch -- although I have to scratch my head, and wonder -- if K-12 sodomite recruiting isn't offensive enough, then what would be?
In many Churches, Public School Teachers are a large and influential part of the membership and they certainly will not back a mass exodus from the Publc Schools.
"Tom, you are like a man who sees a freight train heading for a cliff. You don't know the first thing about freight trains, but you see that it's heading in the wrong direction, and you are determined to jump on board and turn it around." A very wise (and non-Christian) friend offered me that insight many years ago, when I was contemplating a career in liberal denomination. He was right. There are things worth doing, and some tasks that I'm not called to do.
Christians are not called to hide themselves from the world or to become outraged over the lack of "Silent Night" in a school program. We are called to be the "salt of the earth."
If we withdraw from the world, we withdraw from the "Great Commission" which is to preach the Gospel to the world.
This position reminds me of the Ayatollah Kohmenhi, who blessed 8 year old boys, gave them plastic martyrs' medals (made in China), and sent them out into adult battle fields to serve as human mine sweepers.
So you are cool with the idea that Christian adults can use their children as cannon fodder in grown-up wars? On fields rigidly controlled by the enemy, with mines liberally planted? What's wrong with nongovernmental organizations? Why can't your son acquire Jewish and Unitarian friends through a Boy Scout troop, where you also serve? Why can't your kids acquire a surrogate big sister who's a Turkish Muslim grad student, and frequent guest in your home?
Hey, the hookers in the local brothel need evangelizing, and you have teenage daughters! We are called to be salt and light, aren't we? To mingle promiscuously with the world, on its own terms? Think what a ministry opportunity that could be for you! And for your girls! Think how much they could learn!
