Inauguration declared 'emergency' ("A State of Emergency")

Unprecedented action helps D.C. cover costs

President Bush on Tuesday declared the District a federal emergency area, clearing the way for the city to receive federal money to help cover the overwhelming cost of providing security for official inauguration events.

Officials said it was the first time the designation had ever been used for anything other than a national disaster, such as a hurricane or widespread flooding.

More than 100 police agencies from across the country already have been mobilized to help provide security for the Jan. 20 presidential swearing-in of Barack Obama, which is expected to attract 1 million to 2 million people to the District. Authorities will essentially seal off the downtown and prevent motorists from entering the city from Virginia.

"An emergency exists in the District," White House press secretary Dana Perino announced.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said Tuesday night that D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty had requested the declaration of the city as an emergency zone last week.

Preliminary planning for the inauguration had not taken into account the likelihood of unprecedented crowds, now expected to run as high as 1.5 million to 2 million people, Mr. Stanzel said.

"Because of this anticipated influx of people, declaring an emergency permits the federal government to provide additional requested support ... to ensure that the inauguration is not only safe and secure

I do believe, however, that it is important that we celebrate his inauguration

You gotta be kidding!!!
You just answered your own statement as to why NOT to celebrate this rat b@st@rd commie pig's coronation.... Piss be upon him and all the other celebrants of this president usurper.

I just don't believe he is acting like a leader when the country is supposedly in such dire straights.

“I am with you, I won’t be celebrating. And I am sure there is going to be millions of households not celebrating 0bama inauguration either.”

Nor will my household celebrate, either. My wife and I look to 20 Jan as the start of a time of tribulation for this nation. Hopefully, someday, we will recover and emerge stronger.

Our flag has been hanging upside down since election day. We are distressed. Won’t be watching any television next Tuesday. I’ll be praying.

You're right. But there are Americans who will be celebrating. I meant to say that it is important that America celebrates, but not spend the money O wants to spend.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say; but when Reagan won, boy I celebrated and gave thanks and rejoiced. But I had a neighbor who wanted him DEAD. She said it! But at that time, it was my right to celebrate.

Let them have their time Tuesday. We'll see what the country thinks in four yrs.

Are you being sarcastic? Other presidents were protected without a state of emergency declared. Ridiculous

Mine Is also. No TV anytime here, I like the black armband idea and yes this household will be in prayer as always. We must remember as we work or way through these times that God still has everything under control, nothing catches Him by surprise.

You are right. If anything happens to Obama, there will be mass chaos nationwide.

I invoke the Dana Perino rule.

It’s the only part of this post that makes sense.

I’m with you on that. We decided to take the day off and go out of town because our very liberal city is putting up a giant screen in the plaza so that everyone can view this disgusting event. At least we’ll be on the road and away from the sight of the local “Grandmothers for Peace” waving their Palestinian headscarfs and celebrating in front of the giant screen.

A little Chaos is called for to uphold our Constituation:

WE THE PEOPLE of the United States,

in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure Domestic Tranquility, provide for the Common Defense, promote the General Welfare, and promote the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and estblish this Constitution for the United States of America.

On the “Day of Dread”, I will be reporting to work as usual, but I will be wearing an American flag pin upside down as a symbol of distress for this once mighty nation.

I have often said the same thing, God have mercy, but it just came to mind that God just might mercifully put us out of our misery.

President Bush spent 40 Million dollars for his inauguration. The Liberals tore him up over it. I can’t say I was happy about it. It seems to me that is a ridiculous amount of money to spend, but at least his supporters paid for most if not all of it, including security.

Turn to Obama. He is going to spend $150M and WE are going to pay his security.

They started out planning for 6M people. And they talked about every hotel etc for miles around being full. Well that is not happening. Now they are estimating the crowd to be around 2M. There are 800 rooms IN DC that are not spoken for, and many more than that in the outlying areas, all of which they had expected to be full up as well.

I guess he doesn’t understand that when your supporters with bodies that actually go pull the lever for you, that have to be either coersed or hauled to the voting place, are not the kind of people that are going to get themselves to DC so they can stand in the cold for you, and even if they would they cannot afford transportation to get there nor money to pay lodging when they do get there. He may end up having a very small, but very expensive party. Rah Rah Rah.P~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ice Storm, Ice Storm, Rain, Rain

Exactly. Maybe down to 1M... maybe less....

Now our leaders need the emergency funds for their parties. I guess there are no regular funds left to splurge.
