Steele: GOP Should Reach Out To Gay, Pro-Choice Voters
Video Cafe (via Fox News) ^ | Feburary 1, 2009 | David Sunday

Posted on 02/02/2009 9:17:17 AM PST by UCFRoadWarrior

Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee wants the GOP to reach out to candidates who support gay marriage and are pro-choice. Steele told Fox's Chris Wallace that it was "important" to reach out to those voters.

WALLACE: You are one of the co-founders of something called the Republican Leadership Council which supports candidates who favor abortion and gay rights.

STEELE: Yes.

(watch video)

WALLACE: Does the GOP needs to do a better job of reaching out to people who hold those views?

STEELE: I think -- I think that's an important opportunity for us, absolutely. Within our party we do have those who have that view as well as outside and my partnership with Christy Todd Whittman was an effort to build a bridge between moderates and conservatives.

Are you outta your FReeping mind?? just asking. I explained what I meant in that post. What is it about it that you think means I'm out of my mind? If you think we can win elections with what we got to come out this past one, you're the one out of your mind. Notice what I said--what is wrong with it?

You’ll never vote for ANY Republican again because of Steele’s comments? Right.

Tell me, Chesley, how do YOU propose the GOP regain a foothold in the NE and Pacific states? In those areas, the culture war is already over — and our side has lost. For all her faults, I’d rather have Christie Whitman running NJ than Cornine. Does that make me a traitor to conservatism, or does it make me pragmatic?

OK all.. hear me out on this one. We in the GOP can accept and not judge the Gays and other leftist waywards. We don’t have to embrace their ideology or beliefs but lets not reject them openly. Let God do the Judgement thing....we are ALL sinners... We can be against gay marriage, abortion, etc... lets not be overly harsh against those who have lost their way. God gives grace and so should we....Michael Steele is a gracious guy.

Ah well - another 4 years of getting screamed at and insulted by the liberal Republicans on FR for not supporting their guy “because he can win”.

RNC, of which I allowed my membership to lapse under Duncan, hasn't changed its core beliefs.

I'd argue that Steele is being smart here. Attracting voters to the Republican Party is not, I will repeat that, NOT, the same as appeasing them or adopting their views as official Republican policy.

Norm Coleman's office called me today asking for financial support to secure his stolen seat... I asked why the republican party is not involved... he said “good question”. The pubbies have offered nothing to Norm... not even condolences.

Look, this is idiotic. If this article was about a Demonrat leader saying how they planned to “reach out” to pro-lifers and 2nd Amendment activists — while not compromising their pro-abortion, anti-gun policies — we’d all laugh at how dumb that is.

Away from moral issues and more toward economic/freedom issues. maybe we’ll finally win an election. Its not always about abortion guys.

So, the next GOP presidential nominee should pledge to appoint activist judges who'll uphold Rowe vs. Wade and gay rights?

You want new emphasis to appeal to non-Republican voters in blue states, an emphasis that would alienate present Republican voters in red states that actually vote for GOP presidential candidates.

Great strategy.

You can't be serious.

"I don 't know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, "We must broaden the base of our party" -- when what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents."
~~~ Ronald Reagan, 1975
Deja vu all over again.
I’m sorry. I noticed after I replied to you that your tagline states you are an atheist.
Explains a lot.
Now you admit to being a Republican.
You are pro-gay. You are pro-choice.
You are in a small minority of thinkers here at FR as you state “what is wrong with it?”
Read the previous replies. There are a few dim-bulbs like yourself who are in favor of Steele’s position. A few of these pro-gay/pro choice replies drag Reagan into the mix. Funny as hell to see thinking FReepers shoot them down with rational answers.
Why are you here on this site? You should be here:http://www.democraticunderground.com/
I think a lot of pro-abortion people vote Republicans for fiscal or national security reasons or both. The most important thing is to keep the Republican Party as the advocate of protecting the life of the unborn and if pro-abortion people vote Republican for other than the abortion issue then so be it.
well gee... that ought to help... keep 0bama and the dems in control
i’d swear, the people at the top of the RNC have no idea how things work. they think they can co-opt the liberal message, big tent it, and then the GOP is all things to all people.
only problem is, the vast majority of the US doesn’t like the left... and they just don’t bother to vote as the ‘leaders’ being promoted by the right are not inspiring.
put Sarah on a stage, and you’ll see someone that has been there and is living the example... thereby speaking for the people on the right... and then you’ll start to see real crowds come out to vote
If I may join in, I would say that being “Pragmatic” is another code word for being a moderate socialist. Meaning you will gladly accept every attempt to tear down every principle that is the basis for Conservatism in the first place.
As far as trying to mimic the party that has spoiled the East coast in the first place, simply leave them to their own degradation. Before long, they will crumble from within their own design.
That is when a real Conservative steps in and turns it around like Reagan did. You don’t fight these people by joining them in other words, you let them stew in their own juices and fail miserably. The more you leave them to their own ideology, the quicker they fail.
LOL - It can be difficult to get along sometimes though with the 'socially progressed Republicans'. I was at a function for Eric Cantor a few years ago and struck up a conversation with a gentleman there, I broached the subject of abortion, giving my opinion on that pernicious and vile act, and he went ballistic on me.
Here was a man who espoused the economics of von Mises, a strong nat'l defense, the 2nd amend., etc. yet read me the riot act over abortion, strongly exclaiming that "you people really have to stop bringing abortion up all the damn time!"..yada, yada, yada.
I calmly listened and when he was finished with his little tirade I asked, "want to know a really great book, one authored by Ronald Reagan?". He half-smiled and inquired, "what's that?". My reply to him was, "Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation" published smack in the middle of his campaign with Gore. Didn't seem to have hurt Ronald's chances in that election, eh?
He just waved me off and walked away. LOL
