PLANO, Texas (AP) — A police officer was put on desk duty after pulling over an NFL player rushing to see his dying mother-in-law in the hospital and holding him in the hospital parking lot as she died.

Dallas police officer Robert Powell stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats' SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center during the early hours of March 18 after Moats rolled through a red light. Moats and his family had gotten a call saying his mother-in-law was dying.

Video from a dashboard camera inside the officer's vehicle, obtained by Dallas-Fort Worth station WFAA-TV, revealed an intense exchange in which the officer threatened to jail Moats.

They were in a hospital parking lot. A nurse came out and said the MIL was coding and could they please let him come upstairs. Ya think that maybe, just maybe, the cop could have waited? Or issued a warning and let him go be with his family and dying mother in law? Yes, the driver was lucky he didn’t hit anyone running the light. But he didn’t speed off, he didn’t hit anyone, he didn’t fail a sobriety test. You can play what-ifs all day, but that isn’t what happened. I mean, the cop ran the red light too, what-if he’d hit the car with the mom and infant....

I watched the video.

OK, then I will say regarding your post 48:

When flagged by the cop, he pulled into the hospital lot and stopped.

No, he didn't. He drove a considerable distance and ran several stops signs.

I'll grant that he went a couple of blocks - with no effort to evade. When you're two blocks from the hospital and someone is headed in that direction, you have to consider the possibility that the driver needs to get to the hospital. As to the stop signs, I didn't spot them - and I certainly didn't hear the cop talking about them. And, given cop's attitude, I certainly would have thought I would have heard plenty about that, if so.

He drove a considerable distance and ran several stops signs.

With one exception, all of the stop signs around there are buried back in subdivisions (the exception is coming out of a subdivision). Where, exactly, were these stop signs he was running?

OK, I looked at the video. The stop signs were in a private parking lot, not on a public street, and were NOT even in the city of the police officer that made the stop. (The city limit runs between the two red lights that the cop ran.)

Wasn’t it Clintoon and Reno thathandled Waco

Yes, and I personally know the people who DID NOT want to send that "tank" (M-88 recovery vehicle) to the compound,

stlronpaulkid? I’ve gotten some strange FReepmails from noobs with no posting history pushing a Ron Paul site.

My guess is that it’s the same person, just signing up over and over, like this one.

IATZ, I see.

The people defending the cop in this thread seem to be completely lacking any heart or empathy. When I got the call that my mother was going to die soon (cancer), I HAULED ASS to get to her. I would gladly go to jail on reckless driving, fleeing the scene, or resisting arrest if it meant I could be with her when she passed to the other side.

At least Moats’s wife was able to be by her mother’s side when she died. What’s truly inexcusable to me is that Moat’s grandfather-in-law was also held up by that cop along with Moats and IT WAS HIS DAUGHTER WHO DIED. Un-freaking-believable.

Death of a loved one is already an overwhelming experience. I can’t even imagine how I’d react if I was put in his situation. It’s a credit to Moats that he didn’t punch the smug smile off the cop’s face.

I was countering the assertion that: When flagged by the cop, he pulled into the hospital lot and stopped.

He did not. Just trying to keep the record straight.

punch the smug smile off the cop’s face.

I'd like to think his boss, or society will wipe that smile off. Still the union will object.

According to the local news, DPD is starting paperwork to have the cop terminated.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

I’m not sure his mistake warrants termination. But a year or two pushing a desk, or being on the vice squad, or cleaning the locker room might be appropriate.

Actually Moats came to a stop at the redlight and then proceeded. Moats did almost everything right and the cop did almost everything wrong.

If that had happened to me, if I had missed my mother-in-law’s death because of some asshole cop wanted to act like paperwork was more important than what was going on with real life people, I would want his ass.
And if he were not fired,I would sue the city.
