I find myself in Rush Limbaugh's library standing next to a leather couch upon which Ann Coulter is perched. The room is festive -- crowded with relatives, wineglasses, cigar smoke and loud conversation. I am glaring silently at my mom from across the room with my arms crossed in the "unapproachable way" I know she hates. Mom says I have to introduce myself to Ann because everyone else in the family has met her, Thanksgiving vacation is almost over, she is Rush's guest, and I am being childish and rude. I have never spoken with Ann or read any of her books, but based on her public persona, I have decided that she is someone I hate. I feel fine about this -- happy about this -- why would I want to talk to her?
And suddenly I realize that I have become the person I can't stand.
You see, I'm judging her based on her public persona before ever meeting her. And if we talk, and I actually like her, which I might -- that will mean she's become one more person I have to admit I like even though I'm not supposed to.
From third grade on, I have been asked, "Are you related to Rush Limbaugh?" My teachers' whispered questions about the man on the radio made me feel important, even though my 8-year-old comrades had no idea who he was, since he didn't appear on the Disney Channel or in ABC's Friday-night sitcom lineup. During those years, I didn't know who he was either. I knew Cousin Rusty kicked a football pretty well and always brought Cuban cigars to family gatherings.

Ann Coulter is mentioned and not one picture! Come on people, you know the rules!!!!!
Wake up, Julie. It’s liberals who are boorishly treating you as if you’re responsible for the opinions of your uncle — who, by the way, is a brilliant man.
If family is truly important to you, then you need to realize that family is anathema to liberals. Strong families get in the way of government intervention and liberalism is all about the government becoming your EVERYTHING.
I believe that it is perfectly legal to own pre-embargo Cubans. She could also be mistaken. It’s been known to happen.
A vapid, immature twit. She would likely gush about meeting Paris Hilton.
Sorry, but that is just incorrect.
Julie has made choices in life that surround her with looney libs -- she is a goobermint school teacher, and now is writing for Salon. The only time she is hanging with known conservatives is at the occasional family gathering at holidays.
Not sure how old she is but I thought she was fair in her article. I have no problem with her disagreeing with Rush. Plus she’s young and may see things differently in a few years. Her accounts of the random leftists she meets are interesting...The most tolerant and compassionate among us make a judgment about her simply because of her last name. Classic.
Lincoln freed the slaves...................or hadn't you heard?............
Sometimes when I’m out on an errand Cigar Dave happens to be on the radio. I listen sometimes and find out things like if the Cuban Embargo is ever lifted, we still wont be able to get cheap cigars. It seems there’s a waiting list for all of those cigars before they even come on the market.
Not if she thinks it’s okay to charge a pair of Channel sunglasses to her hotel room to get some secret revenge on Cousin Rusty for making her life as a liberal teacher difficult when Cousin Rusty is paying the bill.
Sounds like she’s okay with enjoying the benefits of OPM, just like a liberal.
just curious-did she get paid/compensated to write this?
Limbaugh is a common name around here. I wonder if they get asked the same questions as Julie did? I don't think so. Like a true liberal, she exaggerates and is full of emotionalism, rather than common sense. Perhaps she should turn down those lavish gifts, or cash them in a pay off her student loans.
You have options Ms. Limbaugh. Wear a t-shirt with one of the innumerable snotty liberal statements. Past an Obama sticker on your bag, person or other accessory. Let’em know right up front you denounce your name. Change your name.
Or you might wonder if maybe your cousin has a point about the hateful left. You have experienced it first hand. See what happens to you when you meet a conservative with your liberal gear on. Do a little test and see what happens.
Good luck
"If, as a young man, one is not liberal he has no heart. Yet, as he grows to maturity, if he is not conservative he has no head!"
Winston Churchill
See she wrote this for ‘Salon’. Guess Megan McCain hogged all the column space at ‘The Beast’.
This article reminds me of one written by a former boyfriend of GWB's daughter.
It's like they want to reveal what jerks these famous folks are behind closed doors but can't because it's just not so.
So instead they wax poetic about their friend's imagined reality their own bizarre insecurities.
Grow a spine lady. How much does it take to say. "Yeah I don't agree with everything he says but he is my cousin and you know he's not such a bad guy."
Even if you don’t like Coulter, as a “journalist”, wouldn’t it be a great opportunity to talk with her? This girl has issues. I wonder if Rush is paying for her education?
I was coming from my own experience with my son. When he was in HS and even into his first year of college he did not want to hear any discussions about politics or comments about the stupidity of liberals. BTW, he wants to be a teacher..... He is now in his second year of college and he calls me 2-3 times a week discussing poitics and the stupidity of many in our government and how liberalism/communism is bad for America Julie is an emotional thinker and you are right...going into teaching will not bring her to her senses.
I think she misses the point of Rush’s comment that the only way to make millions is if half the country hates you. She thinks he meant that his radio persona is intended to stir up hate. She’s so far out in left field.
Seems like maybe she published this article with the hope to capitalize on some hate and be on her way to making millions? She doesn’t get it.
True! Liberals are greedier than conservatives. The difference is, they don't like to work as hard for their money. I hope she makes $250,000.01 this year.
