Obama bows down to Saudi King

Clarice Feldman

I am quite certain that this is not the protocol, and is most unbecoming a President of the United States.

bowing down to Islamist monarch

Nachum,

Obeisance is not only deference. Besides, making salaam is itself Arabic, culturally speaking. However, obeisance implies homage and odedience. Subjects bow to their kings.

Also from freedictionary:

o·bei·sance (-bsns, -b-)
n.
1. A gesture or movement of the body, such as a curtsy, that expresses deference or homage.
2. An attitude of deference or homage.

[Middle English obeisaunce, from Old French obeissance, from obeissant, present participle of obeir, to obey; see obey.

obeisance [oh-bay-sanss]
Noun
Formal
1. an attitude of respect or humble obedience
2. a bow or curtsy showing this attitude [Old French obéissant obeying]

I hope he wipes his chin.....

This is embarrassing to say the least. We don’t bow to anyone. We offer a FIRM handshake and thats it. See tag.

nothing wrong or submissive about it.

My point was that what is done in Japan is derived from historical context. The context that I put it in was the faux paux Obie did..... in relation to muslim culture.

Even our military salute is derived from a form of submission (showing you are unarmed). The junior or subordinate renders a salute.... the senior replies.

Is shaking hands considered submissive? No, because the connotations are such both parties are on equal terms. Is a (slight) bow of two parties in Japan (or Asia in general)submissive? No, because the parties are on equal terms.

Is bowing lower than an asian person (or removing your eyes) submissive? yes.

Is bowing to a muslim submissive? YES.

It has an entirely different connotation in modern Japanese culture. One doesn't bow to another, two people bow to each other

Your premise that there was "nothing submissive" is only partially correct. It depends on the context the bow was given. A military, or DOS, member bowing slightly to a Japanese person (that bows the same level as you) is a sign of acknowledgement.

Bowing deeper than the person acknowledges the receiver has a higher status than you.... the same as rendering a salute to a person of higher rank (similar to saluting allied nations, or hostile while in captivity).

Bowing to a muslim is nearly the same as worshiping or groveling as the Qu'ran indicates all are created equal. The mention of bowing is to allah.

Remember when everyone made the big fuss over the Australian PM giving President Bush the friendly "salute?" There bas a huge "ordeal" that the PM was Bush's lieutenant or second in command ("the next Tony Blair")

As for the rest, I did NOT make the claim that Barry was correct to do what he did, nor did I claim that it didn't have cultural significance. never accused you of such; however the demeanor of your post I responded to indicated as such.

good for her and hopefully others will follow it up

Not a peep from the media thus far and yet when they met the Queen which was botched I might add that was shown in a positive light

The Saudi’s protocol director appears at pains to bow as well so as not to extend the gaffe.

You mean the man at the king's left? He looked like an interpreter. And he looked like he was blindsided by the gesture; like he expected to translate some pleasantries, and the bow was so weird to him he didn't know what to make of it for a moment.

You can still find the web page for the saudi site, with the photo of 0bama, by entering the url in google search and selecting “cached.”

See Post #645 -

Front Page of Saudi Gazette shows Obama bowing to Saudi King... No text or caption, but the picture speaks for itself... Especially in the Muslim world...

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2220709/posts?page=645#645

I grabbed a screen shot of the Front Page of the Saudi Gazette before they renewed their content for Friday...

You can bet this picture will be shown all OVER the Middle East... I had to take a break, but I’ll be scanning some of the other major papers and such in the Middle East — nothing really showing on Google, or Yahoo News Searches...

Kind of a slip when I said that, I’m in shock.

I’ve not acknowledged him as my president either. In fact, I truly believe him to be a usurper.

Kissing the ring is how you show respect to the POPE, not some raghead despot.

GWB holding hands with the Saudi king on the White House grounds is one thing, as it showed alliance and solidarity. Bowing is admitting subservience.

God save the USA.

Right. The Saudi king isn’t even a member of the Muslim clergy.
