Peoria, IL (AHN) - Heavy equipment manufacturing giant Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) began layoffs at its Decatur, IL plant two weeks earlier than scheduled because of slowing world wide demand for its trucks and earth moving equipment.
Layoffs weren't supposed to begin at that central Illinois plant until April 13, but it cut more than 1,000 jobs two weeks early there. Layoffs at its East Peoria plant will still begin April 13.
The company is laying off 1,026 employees in Decatur and another 700 in East Peoria.
Those layoffs are part of 24,000 scheduled worldwide, but don't include rolling temporary layoffs.
Didn't he go down there and glad-hand all these people and get all sorts of forced promises from the leadership at CAT? Wasn't CAT to be the 'Recovery Miracle?'
Hmmmm. Guess 'The One' can't pull it off...no surprise there!
Obama said CAT wouldn’t fire anyone if the Stimulus package passed.
What happened?
For a region like Illinois, that’s really brutal.
Are these some of those “shovel ready” jobs that the Porkulus Maximus was supposed to save? I hope not.
>> Obama said CAT wouldnt fire anyone if the Stimulus package passed. What happened?
He didn’t just say they wouldn’t fire anyone... said Caterpillar would REHIRE workers if the Stimulus package passed!

whoopsie... teleprompter must’ve been busted...
Awesome tagline!!!
I thought is was the CEO that said that.
Bunch of suckers.
Sad for the employees.
"...and now ya see why you don't elect lying street thugs to be President of these United Staes"
RE (The Politicians think we’re all stupid, and they’re largely correct.)
Yup. Plus they give us few options
The good news is that its win win - more Obama supporters losing their jobs AND more UAW members given cause to rethink their membership and just what they’ve done.
That’s true! There’s always a Silver Lining.
Yup. Less money for the Obama regime all around.
Can we get the stimulus money back now?
"Enjoy the "bear-trap" rally on global bourses this spring. But remember, we have only just begun to see the mass lay-offs and hardship caused by this slump. The politicians will act to save their skins. Markets may not like the result."
My guess that most of the job losses are in administrative and customer service.
I work in one of the CAT plants mentioned. It’s grim, to be sure. I’m hanging in by my fingernails every day.
I am impressed with the corporate leadership though. They are taking it seriously, and making every cost cutting step they can make - including serious reductions in executive pay - so that we can survive this and come out strong when this recovers.
I’m just hoping that my coworkers can get rehired as soon as possible.
Best of Luck to you and your co-workers. It’s a SHAME what this country has allowed to become of our manufacturing base. :(
Maybe these laid off workers can get temporary jobs taking the Census. Oh, wait. ACORN already has those jobs. Never mind.
