"Tea Party" Protests Appear to Draw At Least 250,000

This is an update and probably the last one. Those of you who are interested in extending the analysis (there are undoubtedly many events missing, although most of the major ones should now be covered) are encouraged to do so at Wikipedia or elsewhere.

But, based on news accounts of 306 "Tea Party" protests in different cities across the country yesterday, I get a cumulative attendance of 262,025, with a fair number of (probably mostly smaller) events still unaccounted for.

These figures, wherever possible, are drawn from objective attempts to estimate crowd sizes, such as police accounts or estimates made by reporters. Organizers of these events have strong incentives to exaggerate crowd sizes. Participants in them may have some of the same incentives, and it is notoriously difficult for people to accurately estimate crowd sizes once attendance has reached more than a few dozen individuals.

I present this data merely as a reference; it is not intended as a value judgment about the success of the protests or their lack thereof. One should bear in mind that ours is a large country, and that gatherings of this magnitude (if several hundred individual protests can be thought of as a "gathering") are not especially uncommon. For instance, protests in favor of immigration reform drew several million participants in the spring of 2006, including several individual events of at least 300,000. Likewise, anti-war protests in 2003 involved attendance of at least 300,000 in a single American city (New York) on a single day.

There were 50 or so at any one time, we were there around 2 pm for an hour or so (Hey, I gotta work for a living!) and the event ran from 8 am to 9 pm, so "50", for total participation, IMHO, is woefully low.

Nice list(s) but numbers are too low. Several events in Southern California were left off, just as one example:

Van Nuys (police estimate at 2,000)

and Santa Monica — upwards of 600 —

There were others around So. Cal. as well and thus I suspect there were tea parties in numerous other cities and towns that are not yet named.

Not on your list is my hometown, Jacksboro, TN, where at least 200 showed up (200 signed a petition, but there were undoubtedly more who didn’t).

Let’s all send these lists to our congressmen and women.

I am scanning newspapers for reports of events held in my area and congressional district. Then I am sending these to my congressmen with a question: Do you hear us now?

A 13 year-old boy at one of the events I attended yesterday (I went to two in two different towns) was holding a sign that read “Next tea party 2010 — The BIG one.” LOL.

Heard a report from Knoxville and the radio announcer mentioned a sign that read “I’ll keep my money, you keep the CHANGE.”

Agreed. The Fort Lauderdale estimate is 1,750, per the Miami Herald, but the equally liberal, but Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel estimated it as more than 2,500.

That's lowballing attendance by almost 43%.

The “big picture” that a lot (including the media) were overlooking was this was done on a Wednesday! Think if it was done on a Weekend how many more folks who couldn’t get off work/school/other responsibilites (you know, those who pay taxes!) would have shown up! (I took a vacation day).

I think with a little more lead time (since MSM wasn’t covering it before, the word didn’t get out as fast as it could have) and done on a weekend, I bet we could hit the million person mark, or darn close to it

The newspaper reports “several hundred” so I would say 300 or so, they said the same for Wasilla and there was 850 there. I wasn’t at the Wasilla event due to a health issue but my dentist office is right around the corner and he said there was a LOT of people there.

The numbers really are too low. In Atlanta, I believe about 10,000 copies of “pocket” constitutions were handed out and people were still asking for more as we left. I believe that upwards of 15,000 was more likely.
