That’s what I was thinking. It appears that it’s OK for priests to be pedophiles, defile little boys, and remain in the priesthood. But what could they possibly be THINKING to have a normal heterosexual relationship?

Because you lack the ability to discern.

Celibacy is a discipline. The Latin Rite prefers to adhere more closely to the teaching and examples of Christ, the Apostles and St. Paul. The 21 Churches in the Eastern Rites do not. Bishops are chosen exclusively from celibates in the Eastern Rite Churches and while the norm is to ordain married men, once ordained a single Priest may not then marry. Also, if the spouse of a Priest precedes him in death, he must then adopt the discipline of celibacy for the remainder of his life.

The question shouldn't be why does the Latin Rite Church follow the discipline. The question should be why don't the other 21, as well as all of those "bible believing" protestant denominations, follow the discipline.

I’m sure that priests have their trials in dealing with human urges, but this is not the way to go.

He is obviously conflicted, and thus, needs to leave the priesthood.

For the record, this is a small part of why I believe priests should not marry. Imagine if this had been a married priest, talking about the urge to have an affair.

I dunno - because PETER WAS MARRIED, maybe? As well as some of the other apostles?

You might also reflect that Paul was probably married at some point as well, since he had been a member of the Sanhedrin. You might recall that marriage was mandatory for membership - it is an obscure point, not widely discussed, but true, nevertheless.

Look, I respect celibacy as a tradition, and the guy should have resigned before taking a wife. But if being married was o.k. for Peter, then it is o.k. for all those "Bible-believing Protestants", who apparently know the scriptures better than you do.

They aren’t denied by outside forces. It is a conscious choice that they make of their own free will.

Two things irritate me about this Catholic priest and his girlfriend. One is the publicity the priest is courting for the seeming purpose of justifying his mortal sin of breaking his vows. The other is his girlfriend using her single mother status as somehow being a legitimate barrier to inclusion of her in the notoriety the priest is wallowing in. He could have left the priesthood without incurring sin. Depending on her marital status, he might have been able to marry her within the church. This is just another sexual encounter between two irresponsible persons who want a free pass on the consequence of their behavior.
That this priest is compounding his sin by scandalizing his actions on national TV tells me that he is prideful and lacking in the humility it takes to be a good and faithful religious leader. The Catholic church is working its way out of tolerating such self centered, undisciplined, self indulgent religious. The sooner they all get scrubbed, the better.
