Soldier suing after being stripped of Subway restaurant franchises

While serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army Reserve, Leon Batie Jr. dodged roadside bombs and scrambled to safety when rockets pierced the night sky.

When he returned to Dallas in early 2006, another battle loomed.

As Batie was returning from Afghanistan, he learned he was being stripped of the two Subway restaurants he bought before mobilizing.

The stores were sold to Subway insiders, with one transaction yielding a Subway executive a $100,000 profit, according to a lawsuit Batie filed last year in state court in Dallas County. One issue in the case is set for trial this week.

Well I like Subway sandwiches.

I guess one reason I like them is I get all the trimmings. This makes the ratio of stuff to bread quite high. They have trouble closing the sandwich to get it in the wrap.

Apparently they put exactly a predetermined amount of each requested trimming on the sandwich. If you only ask for one or two trimmings, that’s going to make for a high bread ratio.

This is standard stuff in profitable franchise operations. Getting a GM franchise 40-50 years ago cost a bunch in bribe money to the GM zone manager.

I go to my local Togo's for sandwiches. Or the supermarket deli.

In the rural mountainous south, an awful lot of these franchises are owned by Muslims. Some were seen dancing and celebrating 9/12.

That was an urban legend. There was the same rumor about our local Subway here in the midwest. The dude that owned the restaurant had to put up like 50 flags to convince people he wasn't a terrorist.

Taking franchises from a veteran is unacceptable, however. I hope they fix the situation.

IMO, privately owned restaurants(Not a franchise)usually have better food than a franchise. The only appeal about a Franchise, of any food type, is that you can depend on it being somewhat similar no matter where it is. Some subways make great stuff, there is one close that does, some Quiznos make great stuff, there is one close that doesn't:). There are private places near me, non franchised places, one in particular, that make sands superior to either Quiznos or Subway. The best one makes a Philly Cheese Steak that is better than any I have ever had. It is near a number of businesses and during the times 11 AM to 2 PM(some places stagger their lunch times)it is so crowded that you are lucky to get in and out before your lunch is over.

Fortunately I am retired and don't have to worry about time, unfortunately I no work in that area!

Before McDonalds, and others, started putting franchises everywhere the local burger joints made superior stuff in my area and they still do.

Franchises are assembly line food preparers and it depends on the specific owner if they are any good or not. I eat at non franchised places when I eat out locally most of the time.

I loved Togo’s sandwiches when I lived in California. Unfortunately, there are no Togo’s here in DFW.

I refuse to patronize Quiznos because of their obnoxious “Put it in me” commercials.

Bingo!

Their commercials have always been gross in one way or another.

“Batie sued under the Servicemembers act. The law bars anyone from terminating an active-duty service member's installment contract, including leases, without a court order.”

I wonder if the law covers business leases as well as apartment leases.

Also, it's quite likely the lease was to a corporation and not Batie himself. There may actually be multiple corporations involved. It's common to have a corporation per store, in turn owned by the franchisee, which is its own corporation. This is done to contain liability issues that may arise at individual stores.

Remember the gross singing rat they used?

what put quiznos in chapter 11 was their idiotic commercials. (and equally idiotic sponsorships)

I get my sandwiches topped with lettuce, spinach, tomato, onion, black olive, banana peppers and honey mustard. A chef salad on a honey wheat roll.

"Lots of Subway restaurants on military bases and they need to be given the old heave ho!"

When did that start? I left the Army at the end of 2000 and up to that time AAFES had more or less of a monopoly with the Robin Hood Sandwich Shoppe and Deli when it came to sandwich joints on post.

Though not entirely always credible, according to wiki there are at least "200 Subway franchises" existing on current military bases.

No wonder Jared lost weight. He probably couldn’t stomach the stuff.

I’d rather spend the 6 bucks for a 1lb burrito at a local joint 5 min from me, with actual chicken or beef.

If you think they were using spoiled meat, why did you not report it to a local health inspector. No restaurants around my neck of the woods can get away with selling spoiled food. I thought that was true of this entire country. Where do you live (so I don’t move there)?
