Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.

"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''

Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Thanks for the great links of info. Had to repeat the Canadian doctor from your other post. Off topic, but U.S. doctors will be talking like this if Obamacare goes through - regardless of Swine Flu:

“In many cases, patients have already waited a very long time for their surgeries”, Kitts said. “By the time these patients have WAITED SEVERAL MONTHS to get here, they’re often in a lot of pain and have developed other illnesses,” he said.

We had our first swine flu death in my area (Northeast PA) this week:

A family is mourning the loss of their loved one who died from H1N1, or swine, flu.

A man from the Berwick area is dead and the health department confirms it is first death in our area from swine flu. His family has a message for everyone; don’t take your good health for granted.

Jason Gensel was 24 years old, in the prime of his life. He had a wife and two children, ages one and three.

On this day his family is in mourning. Officials at Geisinger Medical Center said Monday Gensel died of the swine flu.

“We were a young couple. He was mine. We had two kids. He was 24, never expected it/ I thought he would get over it and he was going to be fine. I never thought this was going to happen to me,” said Tabatha Gensel. “It was from Halloween to the 4th. That’s when I had to call 911 and he had to go to the I.C.U. It happened that fast. I want to say if you feel you have a misdiagnosis or you feel you need a second opinion and if you are sick and feel really scared, it’s okay to be scared. Go to whoever to make you feel better.”

She and her parents still can’t believe her husband is gone. He died last week. Gensel said she has lots of pictures of her late husband to show their children when they grow up so they can try to understand what happened to their father.

“Knowing that he is in God’s hands helps a lot and knowing that I have to get his story out to make sure everyone is aware of this, cause I don’t want anybody to feel this way, even if I don’t know them. It hurts, it hurts so bad,” said Gensel.

“You always think of the flu gets the elderly or a young child or something. You would never think it would get a young man with two kids. I’m totally in shock,” said Jerry Marinus, Jason Gensel’s father-in-law.

Although medical technology couldn’t save Gensel’s life, his family knows the doctors tried their best to save him from swine flu.

“They had so much compassion and determination to keep him around for us. They did everything and I want that to be known that Geisinger Hospital was the best,” said mother-in-law Martha Iversen.

Gensel hopes some good can come from her husband’s death. Her message to others is take flu symptoms seriously. “Wash your hands. Take care of yourself. When you see swine flu signs don’t laugh. It’s serious and it’s devastating,” Gensel added. She said her husband thought he had the seasonal flu but he got so sick that he had to be rushed to the hospital.

“The swine flu is that scary. It just ripped someone right from me without no preparation, any warning,” Gensel said. She and her family believe her husband is with God because of what happened right after he died. “The clouds just split open and the beam was so bright, It just shown right over the room. Jason was so great and I never thought I’d make it to this day and I never thought I could live without him.”

Last official numbers I saw - and even the CDC admits it’s a way undercount - were around 1600.

Thanks for posting that - how tragic, such a young man, leaving behind a widow and two little children.

Could you post a link for that?

It isn’t a typo :(

Alot of deaths are being under-reported .

And there not telling the family sometimes either :(

Did you read this yet ?

L.A. County’s Swine Flu Victims: Death Certificates Tell the Stories Of A Ravaging Virus

Nov 2009 - by Callie Schweitzer - publication of the Annenberg School of Journalism - excerpts

Tommy analyzed the death records and interviewed family members, public health officials and doctors to see what the dozens of h1n1 deaths suggest about the patterns of the illness and who remains most at risk.

In several cases, the families we spoke with said they did not know their relatives had died of swine flu until we told them !!!!!!!!!!!

-————————————————————————————— In these cases, county officials said the diagnoses had been made after doctors filled out the death certificates, and that it is not the county’s responsibility to notify family members. Nearly half of the death records do not list swine flu as a cause of death.

London Ontario
Mom can’t afford to bring dead daughter back home to England
FAMILY PLIGHT
By JOE BELANGER

Last Updated: 10th November 2009, 3:43am
An ailing mother in England is scrambling to find money to repatriate the body of her daughter who died at University Hospital in London last week.

And the relatives of Margie Hipkin, 38, who apparently died of a respiratory ailment, are worried the woman’s body will be cremated before they have enough money to bring her home — about $10,000 Cdn.

But earlier this month she became ill with a cough and fever, eventually ending up in hospital, although the family still isn’t certain what caused her death.

By Peter Luke
November 10, 2009, 9:40AM

The H1N1 flu virus that is sickening thousands daily, and since September has hospitalized more than 800 and killed 28, will probably be around until April Janet Olszewski, Michigan Department of Community Health Director, told lawmakers this morning.

“We’re likely to see waves and peaks and valleys,” she told a Senate subcommittee. “We expect this to stay around. We’ll be dealing with this throughout the influenza season.”

previously reported death (Boone Cty Kentucky) identified....

Father Speaks Out On Son’s H1N1 Death

Reported by: Shannon Kettler
Email: skettler@wcpo.com
Web Produced: Jessica Noll
Last Update: 8:45 pm

HEBRON, Ky. — A Northern Kentucky father wants to increase awareness after his son’s sudden death due to complications associated with the H1N1 swine flu.

Leslie Kovach of Hebron says he is still waiting for the official cause of death of his son 26-year-old Casey Kovach.

The Northern Kentucky Independent District Health Department says Casey did not have any underlying conditions prior to his death.

He was treated at the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence on Sunday, Oct. 25.

His symptoms included fever, vomiting and diarrhea. After his release, Leslie says those symptoms continued.

Three days later, his father says he was going to take Casey back to the hospital.

When he came home from work, he found Casey dead inside their home.

“I talked to him several times about going back in the hospital. I guess what I want to get out there is anyone in that age group, college years up to your 30s: get in with the first sign of flu symptoms. This thing took him in one week. One week exactly,” said Leslie.

He hopes to hear from the medical examiner’s office within the next several weeks.

He says he doesn’t want to see anyone else endure what his son went through.

Health experts say patients should take notice of the warning signs that include trouble breathing, chest pains, fever, vomiting and inability to keep down liquids.

If the symptoms persist, patients should visit a doctor’s office or emergency room.
