UPDATE: Palin To Resign As Alaska Governor UPDATE: KTUU-TV in Anchorage reports that Palin not only won't seek re-election, but will resign later this month.
ORIGINAL POST: Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has announced she will not run for re-election in 2010, CNN reports. She's scheduled to make an announcement shortly.
The decision frees Palin to travel in the Lower 48 as she considers a potential run for president in 2012. A re-election campaign could also have been tough on the former vice presidential nominee; her approval rating has dropped from stratospheric highs, and a number of candidates in both parties are said to be considering runs.
Even if she won, the race would have been dominated by the specter of a presidential bid, giving her adversaries an opportunity to wound her politically. She's still fending off ethics complaints, many spurred by the "Troopergate" scandal.

Exactly right. She couldn’t do what she wanted from a desk in Alaska. There is no doubt she has had a tremendously positive impact on Alaska. But she’s seen enough in the lower 48 to know that she can be a positive voice here as well. At the very least, she could become the female version of MLK. At the very best, she could become our Maggie Thatcher.

When a legal defense fund was started in her name just like Clinton et al have, another ethics complaint was filed for that!!

At least know the story before you make such ridiculous statements. I’d like to see the people on here who are calling her a quitter have to shell out $500,000 with even more complaints coming down the pike and see what they would do.
Now she’s a private citizen who can do more good for this country then sitting behind a governors desk making a yearly salary that didn’t even cover the legal bills of the first ethics complaint.
This is not the last we will see of Sarah Palin, I hope her next step is to go after the people who have tried to bankrupt her family.

I like Gov Palin, but this is bizarre.
This is not the speech of a quitter. This is the speech of someone who is looking forward, to bigger and better things, for her nation.

I went to Drudge because the site had been referenced on the radio. Subsequently, I saw the link for “Free Republic” and was intrigued. I clicked the link, liked what I saw, and signed up shortly after that.
My original screen name was “seeker”. Perhaps one of you might remember me, maybe not. I even went toe-to-toe with “ash”, “ashisalive” (or whoever else he became after he had been repeatedly banned by JimRob) a few times.
I have explained this before to others. Do either of you need me to list the names of several Freepers who were active at that time, but no longer?
It’s highly unfortunate that I had to take a necessary hiatus from this Forum for a few years, but it could not be avoided. Otherwise, my sign-up date would be among one of the earliest here.
If she says she is going to help the whole country and not just Alaska, she means it. She is not going away, we are going to see allot more of her, and she will not be muzzled by McCain camp. With ZerO destroying the country at light-speed, the ongoing world apology for our audacity to fight for others freedom, and making us all feel like a beaten dogs, her voice and ideas will be a breath of fresh Alaskan air.
That is all I ever asked for, and I appreciate an honest answer, which you really didn’t have to give after all.

What we do not know is what are her exact future plans. Presidential run? Senate? Out of politics completely but still working for America....

How does it help us if she’s chained to that desk because they are filing complaints against her whenever she leaves Alaska?
They have complaints drawn up against her for her book, if she tries to campaign, her legal defense fun (filed), going on radio, going on television, one was even planned for filing if she was to announce a run for another office, included if she choose to run for re-election!
She is now more dangerous to the Dems and especially to those in the GOP who set out to destroy her. Her handcuffs have been removed, the gloves are off - look out.

As far as JimRob goes, I sent an email to the “webmaster” back in January, trying to get some help about logging in under my old screen name, for which I had lost the password. Since I got no reply, I had no choice but to sign up to a new account. I imagine that if I really pressed the issue and sent an email every day as a form of harassment, that maybe something would be done to shut me up. But i chose not to do that. I’ll FreepMail you the names of some folks I remember from the “old days”.
And I’m disappointed that you (and others) have been so quick to discount what I have written.

I see that as a good thing. They're showing fear, so they must think they have something to be frightened of.
No one else in the current field of presidential hopefuls arouses nearly as much passionate support. If I were them, I'd be frightened too.
