Palin Is No Reagan
American Spectator ^ | 7.6.09 @ 7:45AM | By Philip Klein

Posted on 07/06/2009 7:22:56 AM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

[C]omparisons do a disservice to Reagan, who not only served two full terms as governor of California, but also spent decades studying the issues and immersing himself in conservative philosophy. His writings and radio commentaries make this abundantly clear. He proved people wrong because they objectively were wrong. This does not mean that whenever the media writes off or attacks a conservative politician that he or she is the next Reagan

****

to win and govern effectively you have to do more than "galvanize the party base" and "convince conservatives" -- you also have to convince independents and even some Democrats, as Reagan did [but] instead of going back to Alaska to gain more governing experience as many advised, Palin resigned after just two and a half years on the job. And there’s nothing to indicate that she has the slightest interest in boning up on policy. Honestly, what’s her incentive to study policy and do the boring task of governing? No matter what she does, her army of apologists will make excuses for her and lash out at those who dare to criticize her by accusing them of being liberal elitists who are threatened by her sheer awesomeness....

[N]one of this really matters if Palin intends to leave elective politics and become some sort of television or radio personality. My comments are only meant as a response to those who are still seriously suggesting her as a potential presidential candidate. Last October, an ABC/Washington Post poll found that only 35 percent of Americans thought Palin was qualified enough to be president, yet now her boosters expect us to believe that an additional nine months in office is all she needed to assauge Americans' concerns, allowing her to resign and prepare for a presidential run.

Neither are any of the GOP “usual suspects”. But she comes a lot closer. Close enough.

I will bide my time and see what she does in the next 3 years. There will also be other contendors for the Republican Party nomination, even some less well known names who could capture the public’s fickle attention. Palin’s the star now, but will she be the star still in 2012? The jury is still out.

That’s very good.

Start a thread calling all who disagree with you and ‘army of apologists’ and therefore your position MUST be the right one, because everyone who doesn’t agree with you is inferior.

The powers that be in Ithaca have taught you well.

Sarah Palin is Spartacus.

And I’m not joking - She inspires many the same way Kirk Douglas did in that movie.

Whether she succeeds at whatever task she chooses next is yet to be seen.

Dear Phillip,

THERE WILL NEVER BE A CONSERVATIVE LOVED BY STATE RUN MEDIA. THERE WILL NEVER BE A CONSERVATIVE WHO GETS ANYTHING NEAR FAIR COVERAGE FROM STATE RUN MEDIA. THERE WILL NEVER BE A CONSERVATIVE WHO HAS THE REQUISITE EXPERIENCE, INTELLECT, PERSONALITY, AND GRAVITAS TO MEET THE STATE RUN MEDIA’S STRINGENT DOUBLE STANDARD. STATE RUN MEDIA WANT WOMEN TO WHORE THEMSELVES OUT, AVOID SHAVING THEIR UNDERARMS, HAVE A MINIMUM OF ONE ABORTION PER YEAR, AND BE TIED UP IN THE DAILY OPRAH, EXTRA TV, ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, PEOPLE MAGAZINE, PROZAC DRAMA CYCLE. STATE RUN MEDIA WANTS MEN TO BE UNION MEMBERS WHO ARE BROKE, LAID OFF, ALCOHOLIC, ESPN SLAVES.

In conclusion, on behalf of myself and fellow FReepers here, I want to extend sincerest thanks to you, for joining the discussion, informing us of what State Run Media and the Politburo expect of conservatives. Seeing this, we will continue to go our own way, all the while shirking the NY/DC Cocktail Circuit elites as we know this surely is the only way to victory.

If it’s a choice between Sarah Palin and Romney/McCDain/etc... I choose the conservative Mrs. Palin.

It’s odd to see so very, very many across the political spectrum hellbent on her destruction.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a real "next Reagan" on the scene, and we may have to accept that there never will be another Ronnie. But that doesn't make people trying to convince us that it's Palin right. At this point, she doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath. Sometime in the future? Anything is possible. But right now, she's done nothing to be worthy of such fanatical, fawning loyalty.

Reagan was no Reagan.

He's the one who opened the door to the "big tent" that the RINOs occupy.

Let us conduct a thought experiment.

Suppose that you had Reagan's reincarnation just completing his second term as governor of a state. What do you think that the Left-Wing Attack Machine and State Run Media would do to him?

On the other hand, Palin and Reagan are indeed an Apple and an Orange. But some of the "Repubicks" are half-right. We can't keep pining for Ronald Reagan to return. But we need a new leader who embodies his principles yet is relevant to today. And Palin can go places that Reagan could not.

One thing that I have to admit is that the Party critics of Palin adhere to the tradition of mainstream Republicans.

The quote is from The Conservative Revolution: The Movement That Remade America, by Lee Edwards and has been modified to illustrate my point.

"In the words of Nelson Rockefeller's public relations head, Stuart Spencer, "We had have to destroy Barry Goldwater Sarah Palin as a member of the human race."

There is a tidal wave of angry Americans waiting for a leader who has the character to expose the plot to destroy our country. Once that tidal wave starts to roll, Conservatives, Independents, and even Democrats will join the wave. IMO, the leader of that movement will get support from millions of Americans grateful that we’ve cleansed our government of power-hungry, arrogant politicians bent on destroying our country and our Constitution. That leader can pick whatever office they want after we take the country back at the polls and after we’ve exposed the treasonous waste in elected office all over this country.
