Papal Message Seeks "Global Authority" for Economy
Reuters ^ | July 7, 2009 | Phillip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.

The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.

Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.

The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.

Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

Well then I would challenge you to understand the word of Christ.

It should be obviously to anyone who follows Christ that if we lived in a perfect world socialism would fit perfectly. Everyone works for a purpose of their best talent regardless of pay.

Of course because you don’t understand Christ then that’s not coherent enough for you.

There’s a new thread on the religion forum that markomalley posted about the difference in the language used in the translation of a certain section.

markomalley as well as several others are waiting for the Latin document for them to check out the English translation especially. They believe it might be in error. I think markomalley posted it as a Vanity about Caritas in Veritate. Check it out.

Thanks! I’ve been heads down, so I only caught this today and am trying to get up to speed on it. Certainly the excerpts being highlighted in the media are disturbing.

Am persistently happy to check Mark’s posts out.

I would much prefer there to be some rational explanation.

I just can’t, yet, imagine one.

Thanks.

It should be obviously to anyone who follows Christ that if we lived in a perfect world socialism would fit perfectly.

And if my mother had married Sam Snead I would be someone else.

Of course because you don’t understand Christ then that’s not coherent enough for you.

Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity is indeed beyond my comprehension, but He is not absurd. As for you, do you understand what socialism is? Socialism is not charity. Socialism is planned poverty. My Catholic wife who fled here from the communists in the socialist paradise of Poland said she used to hear people say, "socialism is where we pretend to work and they pretend to pay us."

And if you think charity is something obtained by coercion at the barrel of a gun then you don't know what charity is either.

Cordially,

“Actually we destroyed the idols of the ancient world and we have no idols.”

Actually, that assertion is quite wrong on both counts.

The record of the Vatican organization/ Roman Catholic church

is quite consistent.

Latin America is probably the most glaring case in point.

Numerous idols were . . . Romanized/Vaticanized and incorporated into the worship rituals of the local Roman Catholic church.

Dr. Eckleburg is probably more expert on that than I, however.

Truth can be a very enlightening experience . . . particularly after a long and pervasive darkness.

“Ok. So you refuse to post anything in concrete terms, and suggest that someone else SHOULD. So, someone else does just that.”

Incorrect. I posted in concrete terms. I always do. What I won’t do is post hypotheticals. That is exactly what everyone is comnplaining about. It doesn’t surprise me that you would exactly state the opposite of the reality that is happening here.

“Do you then have any conception or idea that will keep my little scenario from playing out as stated?”

It doesn’t matter if I do. Your scenario is your scenario. I am not osting here about your scenario. I post here to correct anti-Catholic errors about the faith not dark visions about secular one world governments from anti-Catholics. What you believe in that regard is completely unimportant to me.

“Or any scenario at all that could actually work?”

Again, scenarios of the kind you posted do not interest me.

“Every would-be world ruler since Genghis Khan has been ruthlessly evil — murdering and enslaving millions. Why would anyone imagine that the next one would be different?”

Again, your scenarios do not interest me. Also, you could at leats pick somethig relevant. Ghengis Khan died in the 1220s or so. He started out as a onqueror. That’s not exactly an elected or even appointed office.

“Do you think he will play nice of the Pope asks him nicely?”

Do you think that the pope is hoping for a Ghengis Khan? Could you at least try to be rational?

Nope. What I posted is irrefutably true. At Eschwege St. Boniface destroyed the statue of the idol Stuffo, for instance. And there’s the famous story of S. Sebastan urging Chromatius, the proconsul of Rome under the Emperor Diocletian, to destroy the idols in his home.

“The record of the Vatican organization/ Roman Catholic church is quite consistent. Latin America is probably the most glaring case in point.”

And yet there are no idols there worshipped by Catholics. We have wonderful at works, and some have been used by God for miracles or are miracles themselves (Our Lady of Guadalupe, for instance), but then again Protestants have paintings, statues, stain glass windows, etc. too.

“Numerous idols were . . . Romanized/Vaticanized and incorporated into the worship rituals of the local Roman Catholic church.

No. We have no idols. We do not worship idols and never have.

“Dr. Eckleburg is probably more expert on that than I, however.”

Dr. Eckleburg is not an expert on anything that as ever been posted here about the Catholic faith.

“Truth can be a very enlightening experience . . . particularly after a long and pervasive darkness.”

True. And that’s why so many Protestant ministers have become Catholic over the last few decades.

Well, you are gifted in your taking of anti-Catholic smears to new lows. You might even be proud of it.
