New Addington's most famous smoker to celebrate her 102nd birthday

New Addington's most dedicated smoker is celebrating her 102nd birthday with a big bash.

Beatrice Langley has been enjoying cigarettes since the age of eight, and when she reached the big 100 she vowed not to quit.

She has enjoyed over 168,000 fags in her lifetime but has yet to feel any ill effects from her habit.

To celebrate the pensioner's birthday on August 27, her nursing home in Frylands Court, Hutchingsons Road, has organised a garden party to take place on Sunday.

But Ms Langley said turning another year older wasn't something she was looking forward to.

She added: "All I want to do is wind back time, but I know the lunch will be nice."

Manager Ken Easton paid tribute to the care home's oldest resident.

He said: "Beatrice is a real character and she is still as feisty as she was when I first started here seven years ago.

"You can sit down and have a chat with her and she's still really on the ball. She is marvellous."

The garden party, which runs from 2pm to 4pm, will include a raffle and food, as well as a visit from New Addington councillor Brenda Kirby.

Good for her. Are you using anecdotal evidence as indicating smokers live a long life?

The government has no business telling people not to smoke. On the other hand, anyone who does is dumb as a box of rocks.

You’re stalking me again. I’m honored.

FWIW, this woman aside my grandfathers smoked and died of old age. My uncles still smoke into their 70’s. Little more than anecdotal evidence there. I see it every time I play cards with them. Maybe my “problem” is I’ve never seen any of these horrible diseases caused by smoking that cause even conservatives like you to suspend your belief in limited gubmint just for this one case.

All I’m saying is that genes have something to do with who drops dead of whatever.

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hates to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette

I'm glad she is enjoying such a long life. However, it is in spite of cigarettes. For each of these cases, there are thousands who die in their 60s due to smoking.

As a smoker, I had a rolodex full of smokers in their 80s at my disposal to convince others (and mostly myself) that it wasn't so bad. In reality, I most likely would not have been one of those cases.

I support anyone's right to consume whatever substance they choose, including "illegal drugs." However, I urge anyone to find out and accept the risks of their drug of choice. If you smoke cigarettes, you have a large chance of dying of cancer or emphysema. If you are an overweight person, you are likely to experience heart disease. And as a drinker, the health of my heart and liver is likely to be compromised and I may also die early from that.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Of course the smokers tell you that everyone has to die. Which, of course is true. But it's the process that gets me worried.

Are you using anecdotal evidence as indicating smokers live a long life?

Are you denying the significance of smokers who live long lives? Or is the fact of their being alive too "anecdotal" for relevance?

Long-lived smokers evidence an obvious, major flaw in the paranoia against tobacco.

Pity no one is interested in investigating that flaw. Especially since such anecdotal flaws seem to point directly to some sort of resistance, or even immunity, to things like cancer and heart and lung disease.

But hey, it's not evidence - or science - until a peer-reviewed committee says so. Which makes all those long-lived, breathing, smoking anecdotes pounding on the windows really annoying.

This is not breaking news. Lighting a leaf on fire and inhaling it into your lungs is not health food. It’s for adults.

But your characterization is way off base. You don’t have a large chance of dying of cancer if you do whatever. You have a significantly higher chance of dying early. There’s a difference.

She isn't a very heavy smoker. If you run the numbers, it comes out to about 5 smokes a day.

5 cigarettes a day, hell, not much of an addict at all. Knew lots of guys that smoked 2-3 packs a day. Wonder where they are now? Oh, I remember, they MOVED TO FOREST LAWN!

Keep smoking Obama...

Yeah, 5 cigarettes a day barely qualifies as a smoker, iyam. It’d be a lot more jaw dropping if she had smoked two packs a day for 90 years.
