Excellent question. The screening test has issues with accuracy.

I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t get much argument from the guy who wrote this about that.

Is he saying “it’s the principal of the thing,” then?

Hey, good work!

Maybe y’all could answer questions on this thread, then direct them to yours. This is not within my realm of expertise at all. :-)

I mentioned that same scenario on a thread last week. The swine flu kills you buy over doing the immune system.

I carry a squirt bottle of rubbing alcohol in my car. (Cheaper than Windex). I squirt it on my hands before I go into the store, restaurant, and church. Then again after I get back into the car.

Next thing I’m getting is a face mask, and a few extra for those who visit my house.

Well, read the entire article. The doctor is speculating but he says:

“...people taking only 1,000–2,000 IU/day, with levels around 30 ng/mL, may risk death from a cytokine storm their body is unable to prevent. While only a theory, it would explain why the people with the allegedly highest 25(OH)D levels in both Mexico and 1918 (young adults) were the most likely to die. That is why I caution people that, if you are going to take Vitamin D, take enough, take 5,000 IU/day, which is usually enough to get your 25(OH)D levels into the mid range of the reference range (30–100 ng/mL), which would be 50–70 ng/mL.”

My Vit D3 arrived today. Now I have to find out from doctor when to start taking it and giving it to the kids, and how much. As he says. VitD3 is so potent it is medicine, not a vitamin supplement

I also found that the article that I posted a link for showed up in your link in the detail answers section.

In fact “the presence of vitamin D also appears to suppress the pro-inflammatory cytokines. Thus, vitamin D appears to both enhance the local capacity of the epithelium to produce endogenous antibiotics and at the same time dampen certain destructive arms of the immune response, especially those responsible for the signs and symptoms of acute inflammation, such as the cytokine storms operative when influenza kills quickly.”

His real problem is that he finds 2000 IU too low and recommends a 5000 IU level MIGHT be better.

I was planning on taking the 2000 IU and take the high dose IF I came down with the flu this year.

Join Netflix so you do not have to go to the movies or to the video store.

I cancelled NetFlix when the CEO wrote an open letter to Obummer to raise taxes on all CEO's to 50% or more...He's a leftist Zero supporter....Blockbuster has a similar mail rental plan that's quite good...

I think that we are cross posting!!

Anyway, my understanding about VitD is that it can be over done. The average Vit D is oil soluble, I do not know about Vit D3. All oil soluble vitamins are easier to store and are not like the water solubles like Vit C or B’s. I am comfortable with the 2000 IU, but not too sure about the 5000 IU for a daily dose. I bet that Adelle Davis had levels like that. This is new info for me and I will need to think on it and do some reading.

Thank you.

The science is fascinating. An overview was posted at PLoS yesterday here. This is the first influenza pandemic in the information era. Enormous amounts of data are being collected and disseminated worldwide at little cost. Watching this flu is almost like watching a hurricane form and move on TV.

Sure there is static out there but anyone in the world is a few clicks away from tuning it out.

I don't see how Obama can possibly benefit from this. Its not going to be another 1918 from what we see now, maybe not another 1957-58 but it sure ain't your regular flu. And his HSS screwed it up. So much so I suspect some of the anti-vax stuff is coming from his allies. I believe they want to 1. Lessen demand to make rationing less obvious. 2. Give the internet something to take about rather than their failure.

(my usual disclaimer: the safety of vaccines is a legitimate concern. I am not in any way disparaging those who express those concerns. I am not advocating one way or the other. It is an individual choice and I respect it. I am only pointing out the level of concern is way, way above normal. That has made my Rat Distraction Tactic alarm go off).

You mention, correctly, the liberty issue. One thing I do not understand are those who suspect there will be mandatory vaccinations. There isn't enough vaccine, Influenza A moves so fast forces couldn't be mobilized to force the public to take a shot and there is no profit in doing it that I can determine. So I'm at a loss as why the subject comes up on every thread. This administration is capable of most anything. But forcing everyone to get a shot? Why? Any attempt would fail immediately. The government can't even count how many people are in the country. Can't run Cash for Clunkers. Where is it going to get the manpower and the public support to fan out from Nome to Key West to Bar Harbor and force people to line up to be inoculated? Any attempt would blow up in their face.

From the CDC site here is a discussion of the accuracy of rapid influenza testing. It sounds like it is poor when the viral titers are low, and reasonable (up to 70% sensitivity) for higher titers. Sensitivity is up to 100% for the regular seasonal flu.

I’m in western Pa, and I haven’t met anybody who had it.

Yesterday, however, I got a call from a lady in Birmingham, Alabama, doing family research, and she said it was really bad in her neck of the woods. She said a college sorority was closed down temporarily and 36 girls sick. A couple of schools closed. (They must start early down there - our kids aren’t in school yet!) Two deaths in the county - a 54 year old and a 21 year old. They had a local documentary on how to best protect yourself.

I was thinking the same as you, but when I hear reports like that....
