Elkhart Indiana is a big part of the problem. It has really been hammered.

She probably needs to look in another city.

Back when the telcom bubble bursted I was laid off in January 2002. Other than an occassional contract work ( i did a couple month contract doing entry level basic inventory for major telecom at on point and layed out a warehouse for a small grill/gas log company at another) in and out of telcom (my speciality was project material control and logistics)I could even get most places to even talk with me. I apply for a lot of entry level jobs, clerking, stocking, janitorial...But I couldn’t even get an interview. It was until Apirl 2005 while working a contract for a vendor of a major telecom I finially land a full time job, but I had to move from Georgia to New Mexico on my dime to get it. As I said; “There but by the grace of God go many of us.”

Everywhere else is not Texas. Thinks might be ducky where you live but your area is the exception. We live in NH and the economy throughout the entire NE is terrible. My wife has been unemployed since November, she has exceptional references and over thirty years of experience as a paralegal and executive assistant and has been finding it all but impossible to find a job in spite of looking day in and day out throughtout the country. Please do not paint wiht a broad brush, a LOT of hard working Americans who find themselves out of work are hurting... big time.

FWIW, I saw, back about 7 years ago, a ton of Boeing jobs on Monster and Dice. I applied for every one. I didn’t even get so much as an interview until one of the guys went DIRECTLY to a hiring manager.

I was the only one they interviewed and I got the ridiculously high paying job.

I now understand how there can appear to be a lot of listings on those sites, yet few actually get hired.

I thought the same thing. Another person says they have sent out 100s though without luck. I think they need to have their resume analyzed etc. just to make sure it’s good.

That is easy to say but do you have the money to give her in order to help her move? NO? Neither do I and probably neither does she.

Has she found luck with telecommuting?

That kind of stuff would be found I am sure on legitimate telecommuting sites...wouldn’t be in an office, but would at least help.

That’s an important point. How did you get them to actually go directly to the hiring manager?

I got my layoff notice this morning after nearly 28 years with the company.

Well, it sounds like you've got 28 great years to be thankful for. Now you've got a chance to try something new. Congrats on that!

The media company I work for (see the breaking news bar) as a writer may be declaring bankruptcy this week. I am scared, and that’s even though I made sure before going into this field that I love that I have other paths I can pursue because of its uncertain future. The problem is, nobody in general is hiring right now since nobody is getting jobs elsewhere to leave, so there aren’t openings available. And our economy is doing at least decent compared to the rest of the country (TX, not in KS anymore).

?“I’d shovel horse poop,” she says wearily. “I haven’t even found one of those jobs available.”

18 months and could not find one job, not even shoveling sh*t. Not even minimum wage at McDonalds. I CALL SUCH BS! Do reporters even ask commonm sense questions anymore?”

Here is the problem. I have no idea how old you are, but at 58 I’m assuming she has bills to pay and isn’t a 20 year old, living a home with no bills who can afford to work for $8-$10 per hour and save on top of it.

There becomes a time when you have a minimum you have to work for or lose everything you’ve worked for. At 58, it’s too old to start all over again.

I need some further education so I can get caught up with technology and training (I’m equipment specific and have been since ‘78), but the training is 6 months long, at $3k per WEEK not including hotel and meals since the training centers are nowhere close to me. I don’t have that. Can you send it to me?? I promise to send you a Christmas Card every year if you do.

How will $8-$10 pay my bills working at Mickey D’s? (Provided I could get in there at 56 years old)..

I got my layoff notice this morning after nearly 28 years with the company. They are clearing out senior employees to save money, but are clever enough to cull out enough junior ones to avoid a discrimination suit.

Sorry to hear that Redleg. I've seen a lot of that lately--seniority means your wage is too high and senior means your benefits are too expensive. Older employees are sitting ducks these days.

“Despite some recent signs that the unemployment situation is improving, the odds of actually getting a new job are grim.”.....

WTF?.....What kind of double talk bullshit is this?

No problem, when they lose their unemployment benefits, we don't count them as unemployed and voila, unemployment has dropped and everything is better.

On a less sarcastic note, may God watch over all of you who have or are about to lose your jobs.

Here is the problem..MANY,MANY of these jobs DON’T exist..all these companies do is pad their stack of resumes in CASE something comes open..

I’ve called many recruiters on monster, dice, etc. and quizzed them on where the job is, when do they plan on hiring, rate, etc...etc..

When I get to nuts and bolts, they tell me the job isn’t actually open yet, but when it does, they want to have a pile of resumes to send in..

I’ve learned, if someone can’t be specific on the opening, it simply ain’t there, but you get used to it after a while..

Some very insightful comments relative to the unemployment situation. Mostly from those who have experienced the real world situation that exists in today’s economy. Good luck to those of us who do understand how difficult it is to find a job.
