“Think you can or think you can’t; either way you’re right.” ~Henry Ford
What position are you looking for?
I’m just saying, not everyone complaining is a whiner. It really is tough out there, shady craigslist job-postings notwithstanding.
Actually, I remain employeed for now. The lady in the
article was 58.........
“Its very easy for people to criticize, but if youve never been in that position, its utterly impossible for people to understand.”

I have known people on unemployment who turn in the minimum number of job apps necessary to keep getting that check and sit around until it runs out.
I have a real problem with people who say they can’t find a job. The longest it ever took me was 3 weeks, and I was about to start calling Burger King, college degree be damned. There are jobs; people just either don’t look hard enough or think they are above working at Wal-Mart or McDonalds. If her benefits are about to end, I suggest she put in apps at those type of places. Some money is better than no money.
“I now understand how there can appear to be a lot of listings on those sites, yet few actually get hired.”

We have one large hospital here that has been known to advertise the same job for a year and never hire anyone. I know because my wife has applied there and she has relatives working there who monitor the situation. There is one auto parts place that must have bought a help wanted ad on a yearly contract because they kept the same ad in the paper until I stopped taking delivery and the last time I checked they still had the ad in the paper. As for monster.com I tried them and never got any kind of response other than a couple of scams. I am retired now but would still like to work if I could find something worth doing. I am not going back to work just to be a Wal-Mart greeter though. Some don’t realize that the mere existence of an ad does not necessarily mean that someone is going to be hired.
This is a very bad time to be unemployed, refusing to believe it is not going to change that. I see zero chance for any real improvement any time soon.
I noticed my Blockbuster has a help wanted sign out. Of course, who knows how much longer Blockbuster will be in existence (I’m a real Netflix fan).
We could use some street smart muscle like youse.
This is extremely distressing. Those bastards in Washington knew damn well there wouldn’t be any growth in private sectors jobs with stimulus money. It’s all going into more government to save government jobs and pay back campaign supporters.
I was homeless for awhile after my divorce. Helped start a mortgage company as a partner in Mississippi, was totally destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Moved to Texas and had a decent job right off the bat. Everywhere you look there's work and business opportunities. I weigh 360 lbs and am uglier than sin, do you think there's no discrimination against me? Anyone who's only put in "dozens" of resumes since 2008 isn't seriously looking. When I taught job seeking skills to welfare moms at the Iowa Workforce Center, I wanted to see 4 applications or resumes a DAY and at least 3 real interviews a week or you got demerits.
Yeah, but could you afford me? I’m highly skilled.
Great..so you have rent/mortgage, car/truck payment, credit cards, other loans and have no other means of support either with a working husband/boyfriend, alimony, support and so on.
I congratulate you on being totally debt free and able to afford everything you need on $8-$10 per hour.
Others aren’t so lucky.
“What kind of double talk bullshit is this?”

Exactly what it says, it makes perfect sense. I don’t believe the unemployment situation is actually improving but there is absolutely no reason why the odds of getting a new job cannot be grim even though there might be “some recent signs” that the unemployment situation is improving. Are you stressed out or what?
Yes, I have learned that “phantom” jobs abound. Job hunting is nothing like what it used to be forty years ago when people ran an ad and hired someone for an actual job. Now it is more like chasing rainbows.
I know someone who has been looking at places like McDonalds because all she has ever done is food service/retail.
She tells me they are primarily hiring english as a second language types and she is seeing far, far fewer high school kids get these jobs.
Did you miss the part of my post where I said I recruit for a 50 state mortgage company? Not all security positions are physically demanding. Typically, unarmed security only requires being able to walk, stand, hear, read & write English and see. Do you think she can do that? Obviously, personal protection/bodyguarding is much more involved. Mortgage loan officers, underwriters and processors normally sit in a chair at a desk or cubicle.

Thanks for your sarcasm, but actually we ran out of money Friday, one week before payday. Again. We have 3 very young children, a mortgage, etc. I am a stay at home mom, which I dreamed about my whole life, but have considered going back to work to give us a little more breathing room. The problem—can’t afford $1600 in daycare costs just to bring home a couple of hundred a month. I’ll tighten the belt elsewhere. Looking for a way to get certified to teach without having to sell my soul to cover daycare costs.
My husband came home from Iraq, got out of the military, and worked his butt off for 2 months going to job fairs all over the state, applying to jobs nonstop, etc., before finding something. All of this while we had 3 kids, no house, and were running out of money.
Don’t talk down to me, please. I live in this economy too.
then by all means contact her and talk to her about one of those loan officer, underwriter or processor positions you have available.
When she’s hired I’ll believe how easy it is to get a job..same goes for a security job that will allow her to maintain some semblance of the life she has now..
Otherwise, at 58, it’s too old to start over.
By the way, you and I have agreed on many things in the past. Don’t take this as a personal attack please, it’s just that things are extremely difficult out there at the moment and not as easy as many make it out to be.
It's a puff piece that's fits the reporter's world view - the "liberal narrative" - in short - the ideas won't be challenged.
I’m not talking down to anyone and I apologize if you took it that way. I’m simply stating that those of us at a certain age can’t afford to take one of those burger king jobs based on obligations that must be paid.
