Nasal spray vaccine for swine flu now shipping to some clinics; studies suggest its OK to get shots for seasonal flu and swine flu at same time
H1N1 influenza, or swine flu, has now returned full bore to the United States after largely dissipating over the summer, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official said during a news briefing October 9. Cases of H1N1 have been reported in 37 states, up from 27 states a week earlier, CDC physician and flu expert Anne Schuchat said at the briefing.
A vaccine that protects against the H1N1 flu virus is now leaving factories and reaching clinics, with the nasal spray vaccine arriving first and the injected vaccine to follow, Schuchat said. People considered to be highest priority, including pregnant women and health care workers, will be targeted first.
Schuchat said that 76 children have died from the 2009 H1N1 flu so far. Thats still in the range of past flu epidemics, she noted, but the H1N1 outbreak could continue until next spring. That could increase the fatality count.
Production of seasonal flu vaccine began earlier than the H1N1 vaccine and more is available. The CDC, based in Atlanta, is reporting strong demand for the seasonal flu vaccine as well as for the H1N1 vaccine.
Also at the briefing, Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, announced that early results from clinical trials indicate injected vaccine for the H1N1 flu can be given at the same time as a vaccine shot for the seasonal flu.
Early results from a test of 800 healthy people 400 elderly and 400 other adults show that giving the shots simultaneously doesnt impair the immune response. Doubling up on the nasal spray vaccines hasnt yet been tested, he said...

Death is moving out.
I had a little nasal congestion and lack of energy late last week and this weekend. Coughed a few times. Almost took a sick day. Presumably that was swine flu.
When you coughed did it sound like oink, oink?
And this is Science News reporting??
First, very few people were exposed to the H1N1 in the beginning of this epidemic in the spring so, they would have minimal data regarding this issue.
Secondly, the people in question would have been exposed MONTHS after they had received their fall flu shot, not immediately or soon after such as would be the case at this point in time.
Row at US journal widens - Three papers caught up in journal probe of (peer) review process.
This is an interesting story about peer review and biologists not adhering to traditional theory about natural selection. It's delaying a new paper about a better antibiotic for Lyme disease!
As claimed by the subtitle, that's the main reason that I thought the story was noteworthy. The other points made in the article could use elaboration.
I had all the symptoms, runny nose, sore throat, high fever, chills, ribs hurt from so much coughing, nausea. etc.
I wouldn't want to infect anyone else with it.
Still don't know if I would take the swine flu vaccine. Now, I don’ t need to worry about it. I think I would take it if I had an underlying health condition. Some people are getting very sick. One woman in the waiting room said her kids and grand kids had it for weeks. Now she has it.
If it gets down into the lungs it is very dangerous. But then the regular flu kills a lot of people too.
I don't trust the way the government has rushed this vaccine out. I heard it's not even made in the USA. Some of the vaccines has mercury, some supposedly are mercury free. It looks like it is sweeping through our area before people had a chance to get vaccinated.
Anything to keep you frightened.
Our oldest son is also recovering from it right now. He was pretty sick last week - fatigue, body aches, etc., but was still at school and football practice in the MN cold, but we all thought it was just a cold. (TOUGH kid.)
Over the weekend, he had an early morning football practice (in the snow). I picked him up afterward and he was asleep in the car before we even left the parking lot. My husband took him into the dr later that afternoon and same thing, they did not run an actual test to see if he has swine flu. They went down a checklist of symptoms and he had more than half of them.
He has to stay home from school for one week, has to stay in his room until he is no longer running a fever, and they suggested we disinfect all surfaces and have him wear a mask if he leaves his room (the doctor was concerned about our 23-month old twins getting it). My thought was, “Well, they’ve all been in the same house, their rooms are right next door to one another, haven’t they already been exposed anyway?” He is already feeling better, his fever, which was running about 104º, has already broken, and he is eating normally again. It seems several of his friends have had it, too.

Kid next door has been sick. The doctor told the Mom it was H1N1 flu. Daughter asked her if they tested, Mom said, “No, but H1N1 was the only flu that was going around.”
Daughter asked, “If they aren’t testing, how do they know?”
I’ve doubled my vitamin D for a while, I have “an underlying condition”, the crap would probably kill me.
Did Obamas children take this vaccine?
I’m taking N-Acetyl-Cysteine a nutritional supplement at a dosage of 1,200 mg per day may help to prevent Influenza infection, may reduce the symptoms of existing Influenza infection and may reduce the duration of Influenza infections.

Everyone in our house has been sick except me (so far). I have been taking a mere 1000 mg of vitamin C and 1000 u of vitamin D. The rest are starting to notice...(8^D)
