AUSTIN (KXAN) - An anti-earmark group Tuesday named Texas Senator and Republican gubernatorial candidate Kay Bailey Hutchison as October's Porker of the Month .
The group gives out the title to lawmakers, government officials and political candidates it thinks have shown a blatant disregard for the interests of taxpayers, according to its website.
The group said Hutchison has requested 149 earmarks worth $1.6 billion for fiscal year 2010. The Dallas Morning News reports that, by Hutcisons own accounting, she has steered $8.7 billion to Texas in the past five years.
Hutchison has argued if she hadn't secured those funds, lawmakers from other states would have. Congress had already agreed to spend the money; it was just a matter of how the pie would be divided.
Senator Hutchison is involved in a heated campaign with incumbent governor Rick Perry.
Despite Hutchisons campaign s quickness to mention any negative news regarding Perry, when questioned Tuesday morning on the CAGW title, spokesperson Jennifer Baker criticized its newsworthiness.
"Kay Bailey Hutchison has been one of the most effective senators Texas ever had in making sure Texas tax dollars are directed to Texas projects, instead of that money going to other states," Baker later released on a prepared statement. "Kay Bailey Hutchisons effective leadership has ensured money budgeted by Congress is spent on local projects, military projects and vitally needed transportation needs in Texas instead of being directed to other states like California and Massachusetts.
Hutchison has been quoted as saying earmarks are her way of fighting for Texas by taking care of the states universities, transit systems, hospitals and cities.
Larry Kilgore and Debra Medina are also in the Republican primary election for governor. Kinky Friedman , Hank Gilbert and Tom Schieffer are on the Democratic primary ticket.
But, but, she’s a Republican! Republicans are supposed to be different...right?
Freepmail me or ping me from the original thread to get on/off the 2010 Texas Governor's Race ping list.
Ms Porker has not left the Senate either. Wonder if she is getting cold feet? She knows that she is about to be completely embarrassed in the gov election, and as I have said before, I believe she will back out and stay put.
Here’s how big of a porker she really is ...
She is responsible for $1 out of every $12 in federal earmarks from 2005 forward. She has earmarked nearly $10 billion dollars.
This is the problem with earmarks. It’s a big bowl of cash that all a politican needs do is stick their hand in and take out a wad. If they don’t do it they’re open to the allegation that they aren’t protecting and looking out for their constituents whom have already contributed to the bowl with their tax dollars.
Either you get rid of all earmarks for everyone or quit whining when a pub or conservative has to take advantange of it so they don’t get lambasted by their opponents in the next election.
>> Republicans are supposed to be different...right?
Yeah, they’re *supposed* to be.
But they’re as corrupt as their counterparts. As a result they have robbed themselves of much-needed credibility at a critical time.
But what do they care, because, personally, they have all gotten wealthy from it.
What do you think she does, she buys votes with that federal money. What do they all do in the end? I won’t vote for KBH.
This is why RINOs and Republicans call Democrats, ‘My Friend’. The Dems provide cover. Democrats also provide a useful threat to anyone that wants to whack the big government, big spending, big debt Republicans.
I used to really admire K B Hutchison, but lately she strikes me of merely a blonde version of Olympia Snow.
Well if Texas can get the others to fall in line with Hutchison and Paul maybe we can get enough cash in state to build some roads and other infrastructure. After all that money leaves Texas goes to DC and is redistributed. What is it we get something like 80 cents on the dollar back of the fed gasoline tax....... I don’t know for sure but I’d suspect that Texas is a net supplier of money to the feds as opposed to a net receiver.
Our fearless leaders have GOT to have raw spots from the inordinate amount of time spent scratching each other's backs. Politics and politicians finest hour.
