SPD statement regarding Brenton murder investigation
On the afternoon of November 6th , 2009, Seattle Police Homicide detectives received a tip about a Datsun 210 matching the description of a possible suspect vehicle used in the slaying of Officer Tim Brenton. Detectives responded to a parking lot in the 13700 block of 56th Avenue South in Tukwila. While detectives were investigating the scene further an adult male suspect emerged and pointed a gun at them. Detectives fired on the suspect in self defense, striking him at least once. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. No detectives were injured.
The Tukwila Police Department is handling the crime scene investigation and the King County Sheriffs Office Major Crimes Unit is conducting the officer-involved shooting investigation.
SPD detectives obtained search warrants to further examine the crime scene. Evidence located inside the suspects apartment included improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a rifle, and various other items of evidence. Detectives now believe that this individual is responsible for both the murder of Officer Brenton, the attempted murder of Officer Sweeney, and the arson attack on October 22nd at the Charles Street facility. Detectives are asking the Prosecutors Office for formal charges. The Datsun that detectives were looking for is registered to the suspect. Our investigation into the murder of Officer Tim Brenton and attempted murder of Officer Britt Sweeney continues and we are still receiving and following up on tips. We have received numerous tips from the public and we encourage everyone to continue to call us with any information they may have regarding this investigation.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call either 911 , or the tipline at (206) 233-5000. Those wishing to remain annonymous are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a text to CRIMES (274637). Your text message should include TIP486” to ensure proper routing. “Murder suspect “a little obnoxious” in October stop” By Scott
SNIPPET: “On Friday SeattleCrime.com found that the suspect in Officer Brenton’s murder had no criminal history, but was ticketed in Seattle on October 15th for lack of insurance. It raised a big question of whether that stop could give any clues into the motive behind his deadly rampage.
Yesterday Seattle police released the full video from that stop, depicting all of the interaction between the two George sector officers and the suspect, just six blocks east of the spot where he would open fire on Officers Brenton and Sweeney just two weeks later.
The stop occurred just before 6pm on Thursday, October 15th, when two 2nd-watch officers saw the suspect fail to signal a turn on Jackson Street and driving in an odd way as if he was lost. Note that this was in his green Crown Victoria, possibly an old police cruiser, and not the suspect vehicle from the murder. They followed him down Lake Dell Drive towards the lake, and pulled him over once there was a spot on that narrow road.
The suspect was uncooperative and “a little obnoxious” to officers, refusing to give his phone number and giving backtalk to one officer when she asked him if he needed directions. But other than demonstrating he possibly had an issue with authority, there was nothing to indicate what he was allegedly planning for the coming weeks.
A condensed version of the video is included above (all sections without audio removed), and here is a transcript of the interaction:”

Chris Monfort
“NO WAR”
Chris Monfort has been seriously painting for two years, and plans to continue throughout his life. He does not believe in any particular set of rules as far as artistic expression is concerned, and his work portrays this freedom. He has a love for color and motion, particularly during long gloomy winters. His apartment is full of colorful paintings. He says, “they give me the energy that’s missing from our sunless winters!”
Monfort plans to complete two degrees before leaving Highline; a transfer degree and a degree in Administration of Justice. He then plans to earn a bachelors degree and possibly head for Harvard Law School. His alternate plan is to earn a Masters degree and teach at a college somewhere warm!
The November HCC Library Art Gallery Exhibit is entitled “No War”. Monfort feels that his art portrays this sentiment.

“Child porn found on computer of SPD murder suspect”
by JIM FORMAN / KING 5 News and KING5.com Staff

Updated yesterday at 11:27 PM
SNIPPET: “SEATTLE - KING 5 News has learned Monfort is now being investigated on child pornography charges. Investigators say they found massive amounts of child pornography on Monfort’s computer.”
KING 5 News also now knows the exact content of one of two notes left at the scene of the police car bombings on October 22. Law enforcement sources tell us they believe Monfort wrote the notes, assuming police officers would die when the cars exploded.”
SNIPPET: “Seattle Police say the DNA of the suspect in the Oct. 31 murder of Seattle Police Officer Tim Brenton was found at both the murder scene and the scene of a firebombing of several police vehicles on Oct. 22.
Police say they are certain they have the car, a Datsun 210, and the gun, an assault rifle hobbled together from different parts, that their only suspect, Christopher Monfort, used to gun down Officer Tim Brenton.
“We’ve determined through the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab that the assault rifle found in the apartment is an identical ballistic match to bullet fragments taken from the scene October 31st that killed Officer Brenton and almost killed Officer Sweeney,” Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said at a Monday news conference.
At Monday’s press conference, police released photos of the car and a rifle.”

Police: DNA, bullets link suspect to officer death
By GENE JOHNSON (AP) 1 day ago
SEATTLE
SNIPPET: “Seattle Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said DNA belonging to 41-year-old Christopher Monfort was found on an American-flag-style bandanna on the ground where Officer Timothy Brenton was shot and killed and officer-trainee Britt Sweeney was wounded, and the .223 rifle used in the attack was found in Monfort’s apartment.
In addition, investigators found Monfort’s DNA on a small flag found at a city maintenance yard where four police vehicles were firebombed on Oct. 22, Pugel said.
That attack is now being described as an attempted assassination: A fire in a mobile command post was set first, apparently to attract officers, and after they arrived, the cruisers exploded. Two officers who responded almost parked next to the cruisers that exploded, but instead drove to a different part of the maintenance yard looking for the culprit.
“They would have been killed or seriously maimed,” Pugel said. “He meant to kill someone then.””

“UW alumnus detained in shooting of Seattle police officer, in critical condition”
By
November 10, 2009
SNIPPET: “During a hearing at about 4 p.m. yesterday, King County Superior Court Judge Sharon Armstrong found probable cause to detain Monfort, identified by The Seattle Times as a UW alumnus, for the crimes of aggravated first-degree murder and attempted murder in the first degree.”
SNIPPET: “The suspect was chased to a stairwell, where he pointed the gun at detectives a second time, at which point the detectives shot him in self defense.”
SNIPPET: “Additionally, evidence from Monforts Datsun 210 indicates that the vehicle was shot by Sweeney, who returned fire during the incident.
The deadline for the prosecuting attorneys office to file charges is Nov. 13, and a filing decision is expected to be made this Thursday. Monfort has not been booked into King County Jail due to his medical condition. Bail was not set because the incident could potentially be a capital case.”

The bullet match statement is a bit overreaching. You can’t say it matches to the exclusion of all others in the world unless you’ve examined every other weapon in the world. That’d normally be a statement that it matched in all particulars. At any rate, the DNA is going to hang the guy, and it’s a richly deserved hanging IMHO.

“Murder charge filed in Seattle officer’s shooting”
By LEVI PULKKINEN
SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF
SNIPPET: “Accusing the alleged cop killer of waging a “one-man war against police,” King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg announced charges that could see Christopher J. Monfort executed.
Monfort, 41, has been charged with aggravated first-degree murder in the Oct. 31 slaying of Seattle Police Officer Tim Brenton, Satterberg announced Thursday. Prosecutors also charged Monfort with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of arson, asserting that the man rigged several bombs at a City of Seattle garage hoping to kill officers and firefighters.
Like Monfort’s other intended victims, Brenton and partner Officer Britt Sweeney were “targeted solely because of the badge they wore,” Satterberg claimed.
“He had a plan to wage a personal war against the Seattle Police Department,” the elected prosecutor said.
Described as a “domestic terrorist” by police, Monfort is accused of ambushing Brenton and Sweeney as they sat in a patrol car in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood. Sweeney, who suffered a grazing wound in the shooting, told investigators Monfort pulled up next to the patrol car in a light-colored coupe and opened fire; Brenton was struck by multiple rounds and died at the scene.”

SNIPPET: “SEATTLE -
SNIPPET: “New court documents show that officers found an arsenal of weapons stockpiled in Monfort’s Tukwila apartment with ammunition and the ingredients to make pipe bombs. Investigators also found a gas mask and a police and fire scanner which could be used to monitor officer activity.
Monfort is charged with the execution style murder of officer Timothy Brenton on Halloween night. Police say the gunman’s Datsun 210 had one missing headlight and a bullet hole in the back.”
SNIPPET: “The documents show authorities matched a computer printer and paper at Monfort’s apartment to threatening notes left at the scene of the arson. They also found a large American flag on Monfort’s bed which investigators say matches a flag left at the arson scene.”

Band Leader: “When police die, I feel that the streets are just a little bit safer.””
Dana RebikWeb Reporter
3:36 PM PST, November 19, 2009
SNIPPET: “SEATTLE - “When police die, I feel that the streets are just a little bit safer. “ That’s what the leader of the Seattle punk band Furious Styles has to say about the murder of Seattle Police Officer Tim Brenton on Halloween night.
The local crime website Seattlecrime.com broke the story with a photo of the band’s latest t- shirt - emblazoned with a picture of murder suspect Christopher Monfort and a blood-covered Seattle Police badge.
The shirt reads “Deliver us from evil”.
Less than three weeks after the murder of Officer Tim Brenton, Seattle Police Guild President Rich O’Neill says this shirt is taking things too far.
“It is very vulgar and a display of some of the same sick attitudes the suspect Chris Monfort harbored,” says O’Neill.”
