The Silver Lining of the Left in Power
Townhall.com ^ | November 17, 2009 | Dennis Prager

Posted on 11/17/2009 6:06:43 AM PST by Kaslin

There may be a major silver lining for conservatives and for America's future thanks to the foreign and domestic policies of President Obama and the Democrat-controlled House and Senate: For the first time in their lives, millions of Americans are coming to understand the left.

It is difficult to overstate how important this is. For decades, the left has largely controlled the news media, the arts, the universities and the entertainment media. And vast numbers of Americans have imbibed these leftist messages and the leftist critiques of conservatives. What these Americans have never been able to do is to see what the left would actually do if in power.

Of course, all one had to do was look at California and see how a left-wing legislature brought the country's largest state economy to near insolvency and bankruptcy, chased away many of its most productive citizens, and wasted tens of billions of dollars thanks in large measure to union domination of the state's politics.

But most Americans do not observe other states. Most Americans are preoccupied with their lives and, unfortunately, with what is on television.

Now, this has all changed. Americans are watching California enacted on the national stage.

And it is scaring all but the ideologically committed left -- a rather small, if profoundly influential and powerful, minority. This is why last week, Gallup reported an extraordinarily dramatic and quick shift of independent voters' electoral preferences. In the Gallup Poll's words: "Over the course of the year, independents' preference for the Republican candidate in their districts has grown, from a 1-point advantage in July to the current 22-point gap."

In half a year, there has been a 23 percent shift from Democrats to Republicans among independent voters. And nothing particularly bad had occurred -- no further economic meltdown, no terrorist attack from abroad (the Poll preceded the Fort Hood attack).

Now Americans see the left's policies for what they are:

1. The left wants America to abandon its defining commitment to individualism and replace it with a European-style nanny, or welfare, state. At most Americans' core is an abiding belief that we are supposed to take care of ourselves, our families and our neighbors, and not rely on the state to do so.

2. The left is naive about evil. Most Americans deemed Communism evil; the left ridiculed President Ronald Reagan for calling the Soviet Union an "evil empire" and often undermined the fight against the Communist world. So, too, the left is naive about Islamic terror and undermines the fight against it.

The smoking gun was the nearly universal denial by the left that his Islamic beliefs had anything to do with Maj. Nidal Hasan's mass murder of fellow servicemen at Fort Hood. One of many examples was this reaction to the shootings by Evan Thomas, Editor at Large at Newsweek: "I think he's probably just a nut case. But with that label (Muslim) attached to him, it will get the right wing going..."

3. The left is more interested in redistributing wealth than in creating it. This should have been as obvious to Americans as the brightness of the sun. Finally, Americans are coming to realize that the left's goal is now, as it always has been, equality, not prosperity.

4. The left is far more interested in power than the right is. This, too, should have been self-evident, but finally, people are realizing that those who are preoccupied with creating an ever-expanding state are obviously far more interested in amassing power than those who want a smaller state.

5. The left is preoccupied with America being loved, and in pursuit of that end, compromises some of America's core values. Examples abound here, too. To cite a few: the Obama administration's neglect of those in Iran risking their lives for freedom in that tyranny; the administration's refusal to meet with the Dalai Lama when the Tibetan leader visited Washington, lest the president annoy China's dictators; the American government siding with Hugo Chavez against the Honduran government, which had legally removed a Chavez clone from the Honduran presidency; and the president's obsequious apologies for America wherever he goes.

A motto of my radio show and of my life is "Clarity is our friend." It is certainly so here. Clarity about the left will be a blessing to America.

"Dont’ misunderstand...I agree with Prager..."

OK, got it.

"...but reversing the liberal idiocy of the last few years will take time, and I’m just saying that the general public (aided by the lamestream media) will be clamoring for 'changes' and improvements in minutes or days, versus years and decades."

Yes, while never giving serious thought to that which they wish? Lending further credence to the old tome "Be careful what you wish for." ??
You're absolutely positively 100% correct.
You could be my blood brother, our thinking's that similar and I'm not trying to insult you saying so, either. LOL

"The majority of the populace either didn’t care or wasn’t concerned about the 50 years of liberal incrementalism, but once it begins to adversely effect them, they will want it eliminated 'tomorrow."

Yes, the immediate gratificationites will have expectations of immediate gratification. Makes sense.
Why they swallowed zerO's baloney with such ease, I'd guess; and, why they're so profoundly disappointed. The disappointment brought pain, and the pain brings clarity. Dennis said that and you & I agree.

"The ability to blame Pres__ent Zero for the obvious damage he has brough upon the country, will soon result in a call for yet another 'change'... enter the libtard, 'smarter and better' crowd once again, and the cycle repeats itself in perpetuity."

Maybe not this time, my friend.
Something so new, so outrageous, so 'in yo' face' & born of desperation could always happen. An event with the potential of changing the entire political landscape, altering [it] forevermore. ;^)
For example, please take a few minutes to follow THIS thread, starting at the place I've hyperlinked to. OK??

Love to hear your thought(s), afterwards. ;^)

Why do we have to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again?

Because each new generation has to live under socialism for a while to rediscover how awful it is?

We have a winner! Your grand prize is getting to live under socialism for a while with the new generation.

The left is preoccupied with America being loved, . . .

I strongly disagree. The Left hates America and wants to project to the world as ugly an image of America as possible, even if they have to make things up.

Prager IMHO is a little warm and fuzzy and less than incisive in his dissection of Left motives. He got pretty close to it when he noticed the Left's love of power, but I think he fails to grasp that everything they do is always and completely about power, even the "cultural" and "popularity" stuff.

They're about stuffing America and America's heritage.

The ugly sequel is that, if they ever get their People's Republic here, Bill Ayers's 25,000,000 dead is just the down payment. They'll kill 200,000,000 people, because they will learn greatly to fear the memory of America and what the American Experiment was, and it will take killing that many people to wipe out the memory. What's left will be 100% "minorities", all of them thoroughly Sovietized and most of them the children of illegal immigrants.

This is *my* take and “hope and change”...that these views will enter the well guarded crania of the left.

Nevertheless, we know great numbers of liberals will respond, “so what, I want what’s comin’ to me anyway, I don’t care whose pocket it comes out of”.

Prager is a nice guy. Too nice for me. I will state it until I am blue in the face....we cannot last 3 more years of Obama.
Not and have a country that is even recognizable to us. We will be irretrievably bankrupt. That is his goal...to take over everything once the country is in shambles. 2010? Why bother? It is clear to me that Republicans don’t care enough about voter fraud to stop ACORN/SEIU from stealing every close election. They did it in Minnesota, and it appears they have now done it in NY23. I signed up here in Arizona to monitor my district during voting time. About 20 of us did. We will monitor everything there possibly is to monitor. Where are the Republicans in Minnesota? Where are they in NY? Where are they anywhere? It seems that the only viable way to stop the total destruction of our country is CW2. At least there are enough patriots(armed and pissed) to stop the complete destruction of our beloved country. I pray that by that time, it will not be too late to salvage.

I honestly don't think it will help. Look at all the states run by Liberals for years, and people just keep coming back for more abuse. Few of them seem to learn their lesson. After all, these are people with no moral center - but,... they do have a well developed greed center.

Next year after all the illegal aliens are made citizens and immediately become Liberal voters for their Liberal Caudillos, the Left will have an additional 20+ million more votes in the bag to continue the Gravy Train.

Frankly, "we" can't change enough minds long enough to overcome that, and the Left knows it. That is the main reason they no longer care what we think. Instead, they merrily continue to forge our chains.

Stop beating around the bush, and get to your point. Then support your point, show the consequences, and recommend changes.
But start with the THESIS so we don’t all get bored looking for what you mean, and quit reading before we get to it.

Never underestimate the value of an old-fashioned American high school education. He writes so well that rather than listening to him read, I much prefer to read him myself.

The once all powerful MSM are in decline. It is not likely that they will wield the same power in the present or the future.

Wrong, Dennis. The left's goal is now, as it has always been, political power, not prosperity. They are closet communists and what the 2008 election did is made them feel safe enough to pull down their masks and show everyone who they really are - Communists with smiley faces.

......the children of illegal immigrants.

"Anchor babies" are at the very heart of the the "Natural Born Citizen" controversy, so efficiently swept under the MSM rug.

Rather than an "NBC" being defined as the child of two citizens, an all-out effort is being made to include any "native born" person in the POTUS-eligible category. The Electoral College vote for Obama was nothing less than a de facto Constitutional amendment.

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction." Ronald Reagan

I am disgusted by the fact that later historians will include all of us living today as the "generation" that allowed freedom to become extinct, even if temporarily.

What did we do to deserve this distintion?

Who are the nutjobs who want a world like Obama wants?

I know the answer bit still have a hard time believing this is happening.

"We will monitor everything there possibly is to monitor. Where are the Republicans in Minnesota? Where are they in NY? Where are they anywhere?"

steph.
A Republican, ones with trunks, could SIT on ballot boxes and it wouldn't matter if they're allowed to sashay through the DOOR, days/weeks later with boxes full of ballots found in cars, garbage cans etc.
Right?

Only thing that can be stemmed is if there're opposition thugs in and around the polling place intimidating, threatening etc and/or multiple & recognizable voters.

While I applaud each & every single soul, especially you, who volunteers their valuable time to be a presence.
Exactly what're monitors look for outside what I listed above, stumps me.

"It seems that the only viable way to stop the total destruction of our country is CW2."

Yes, I'd agree; however, let us not be stampeded by these buggers. I'm wagering after all this is said & done how much of the Communist agenda will make it.

In the meantime, based on what one thinks may happen --& it could, it just hasn't -- would precipitate, even justify the very response we loath on top of helping them implement the crap.

Patience. Unbelievably they're hanging themselves faster than anything out side could say, or do. It is, to me, the best example of Divine Guidance I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.

"At least there are enough patriots (armed and pissed) to stop the complete destruction of our beloved country. I pray that by that time, it will not be too late to salvage."

For no keep the powder dry, my friend.

Most Americans have no idea about Jimmy Carter. They have no idea of what the Left wants to do to this country. At last they are finally finding out and don't like it.

WRONG. The left doesn't care about "equality" any more than the thief who steals a wallet cares about "equality"... The left cares about looting from those who worked for their money and giving to those who didn't...

The Electoral College vote for Obama was nothing less than a de facto Constitutional amendment.

If the various affidavits offered the states' attorneys-general when his name was placed on the ballot were defective and/or false, then one would think the vote would be void.

But as another FReeper or two have been pointing out, there is a statutory gap in terms of enforcing a cure. It's an area of the Constitution that the 'Rats can exploit because there's no organic law, other than the Constitution itself, to protect the People's interest and punish malefactors.
