A 31-year-old man said he intended to fire only a warning shot when he accidentally killed a woman whod been part of a group who robbed him Tuesday night on the South Side.
Im trying to fire a warning shot like stay the hell back, the man said in an interview Wednesday. He did not want his name printed.
Police say the mans story appears to check out.
The dead woman was identified as Barbara McComb, 21, of the 4200 block of South Calumet Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiners office. She was pronounced dead early Wednesday at Stroger Hospital.
The man said he was robbed at gunpoint about 11 p.m. while he was walking to a corner store near 47th and South Prairie. He said he was then forced into a sedan with the gunman and four others, all of whom appeared to be in their teens.

It’s just so much easier to say it was a warning shot.
Oops!
For a warning shot, nice shooting.
Didn’t he have enough bullets to kill the rest of them? (If it had been me my story would have been — “Yes, officer I fired a warning shot into each of their heads”)
It was a warning shot....meant for the rest of the group.
He should have fired more “warning shots” it sounds like. Good effect, though. This POS won’t be robbing anyone else. Hope the rest of her crew is caught. Of course, these crooks knew their victim would be unarmed.
That’s just a mile and a half nw of Obama’s neighborhood
A hive queen too. Not merely a drone.
Well done on the warning shot. Warnings usually don’t do any good.
When holding a gun, think!
Another nite in Mogadishu by the lake.
Attorney General Holder must investigate this further. It occurred in Chicago which is a "crime free" town as bespoke by the annointed one. The people were ACORN fund raisers pursuing Christmas Cheer, (they did enter a bar!)
What appears to be a kidnapping and theft was really wealth distribution and change!
Reading the whole article, I bet the man would have been murdered had the situation not turned.
On this 'your permanent record' it did.
Robbed at gunpoint... forced into a car... fires a warning shot, killing one... and he didn’t get shot? How big was that car?
Unfortunately he will now be sued by the girls family. “I was afraid for my life.” Seems like a better answer for the shot.
Did you read the story? There were five assailants. It took three (!) to go into an inconvenience store to use his ATM (and pose for pictures, unbeknowst to them).
The drive tossed the gun into the back seat where the shooter and the female perp were sitting when the driver saw some cops. The shooter shot the female perp in the hand in a scuffle for the gun and managed to get the gun and flee. She followed him and he probably fired wildly in her direction trying to shake her. Successfully, as it turned out.
I cannot imagine how loud a report would be inside a car.
That’s my kind of warning.
Clear, direct and straight to the point.
Too bad he didn’t get to give equal warning to the rest of the thugs.
