The thing that is most perplexing, as many others have noted, is that so many papers published THIS particular email. It is the papers that have MORE explaining to do than the sender of the email. Everyone gets spammed. All campaigns, both sides, do form letters of one sort or another. What is odd is that so many papers chose this ONE email. I am not saying that there isnt value as to who sent it. I am saying that there is more value as to WHY so many papers chose to publish this particular persons email. I think we are looking at an or else presidency and a lot of papers seem to have gotten the or else message. EXACTLY!!!

Everyone will be sorry when Ellie Light goes blind after succumbing to Soap Poisoning.
Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Robby the Robot had more personality than “Klaatu”. Also got a longer Hollywood contract - from “Forbidden Planet” to “Lost in Space”. Lasted longer than Conan Obrien, another robot.

Assuming the headers aren't spoofed. I think some of them are. see http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/browser_ids.htm, which, I think, explains this as "Life behind a junkbuster proxy."
Fudging e-mail headers is what spammers do to get past various anti-spam facilities. Other than the "last hop," the header information is not reliably provable by a recipient.

“Klaatu Barada Nikto” actually was a warning about the future of the US which got scrambled by a wormhole.
It actually meant “Don’t vote for anyone named Barack”.
Didn’t correctly translate it in time, just like we missed on “To Serve Man”.

Hard to imagine that Washington Times is on the list, a very conservative newspaper. What would be the “or else” with that paper? People have already mentioned how hard it is to get a letter in the newspaper. Why did this letter make it with so many papers, avoiding the normal confirmation procedures and protocols, is a mystery. Maybe some interviews with these paper’s editors are needed to get to the bottom of this story.
To: Spiff
Well, if odds are that this is a spoofed address in Italy, we can consider this to be a relatively sophisticated spammer, not some hack. Even if it is truly from a European, the disinformation is worrying.
