Danny Williams going to U.S. for heart surgery (Canadian Premier bypasses Socialism)
CBC News ^ | 2/2/10 | CBC Staff

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is set to undergo heart surgery this week in the United States.

CBC News confirmed Monday that Williams, 60, left the province earlier in the day and will have surgery later in the week.

The premier's office provided few details, beyond confirming that he would have heart surgery and saying that it was not necessarily a routine procedure.

Deputy Premier Kathy Dunderdale is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday morning.

She's expected to provide more details about Williams's condition, as well as how the provincial government will function during his absence.

CBC reporter David Cochrane said Williams appeared to be in good health recently. He described the premier as "fairly active," playing pick-up hockey at least once a week when work permits.

What is a “Progressive Conservative?”

It's like a RINO, only worse.

Well sort of but understand that this is Canada, yuh know. The whole place is so far to the left that the PCs are naturally going to have to swish lots of water in with that wine or they will be out of office.... at least regardless of whether that is correct or not, that's the perception. That becomes a tough choice for decent politicians and as an example, Stephen Harper is probably playing it about as well as it could possibly be played. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will be Canada's return to a reasonable facscimile of conservatism

Back to the theme of this article, the fact that the Premier did not have the operation in Newfoundland is scarcely surprising. This would sort of needing an operation but living in the northwestern quadrant of Alaska. A great place to visit but seriously lacking in modern facilities. However, the fact that he didn't have the operation somewhere else in Canada does in fact say everything that one needs to know about the state of socialized medicine north of the 49th.

Treatment not available in Canada?

That's his story and he is sticking to it.

I don't fault this guy for wanting proper care

It is his flaming dishonesty and hypocrisy that makes him a dirtbag. He condemns the people of Canada to treatment that he woul never allow for himself or his loved ones. The proletariat don't get their US healthcare paid for by Canadian insurance. No private care for them!

It’s a serious question, because it looks like a Progressive Conservative is someone who cuts taxes and spending.

Doesn't that define "conservative?"

IMO, my list are progressives but not as far out as those who call themselves "progressive"...Barry and Hill come to mind.

What is a progressive conservative? A compassionate conservative?

It won’t.

Elitists feel entitled to better resources than the serfs.

And every lib, from the president down to the hemp stinkinest dreadlocked hippy kid in your local junior college thinks that he’ll be one of the ones holding the whip instead of being under its lash.

Maybe Obama’s highspeed rail can go from Canada to Mayo Clinic in Rochester,MN.

At least then somebody might ride it.

Maybe the Premier and Brock Lesnar can ride together.

This is an indeed an apt description of the Newfoundland premier. Progressive policies for his subjects and the fruits of conservatism for himself, his family and friends.
Micheal Moore would also be considered a progressive conservative.

Thanks for posting. Got into a rather unexpected and bitter argument last week with one of my liberal relatives about this.

He was trying to tell me that the USA doesn’t even make the top ten list of the world’s best places to get health care (unbelievable!), much less rank as the number one best, and that no one in his right mind would come here for care.

In the future, I intend to email him every article like this I can find in the hope that I can plant at least a tiny seed of doubt and help him overcome a lifetime of liberal propaganda.

(So if anyone knows of a place on the web that has a listing of all the world’s movers and shakers who have come here for their health care, please let me know. Thx.)

And, if you are past 80 no glaucoma treatment (go blind), after 72 no hip surgery (just suffer with pain and sit in a chair), advanced cancer (no radiation treatments), limited prescriptions reimbursements and one MD visit per month.

Sounds good, eh?

10 months on the waiting list.

I talked to a woman from Canada who has a son that needed a non emergency tonsillectomy.

He got on the waiting list in March 2009, the surgery was done January 29, 2010. They do not live in a remote area, they live within a 1 hour drive of Montreal.

It was done as an outpatient, is that the way it is done in most hospitals in the US?

Places like the Cleveland Clinic make big money off of connected Canadians, primarily from OHIP, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.

Are you saying the average Canadians in OHIP will not the get the same treatment, be sent to the Cleveland Clinic?
