Blizzard of Lies: Debunking The Warm-Air-Holds-More-Moisture Defense
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 02/12/2010 4:33:36 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

By now, we're all familiar with the global warmists attempt to explain away the record-breaking mid-Atlantic blizzards. Take this, for example, from the New York Times [emphasis added]:

[snip]

So more snow fell from Philly to DC because the temperatures were warmer than normal during the blizzards? That got me wondering: just what were the temperatures in DC on the snow days, and how do they compare to the norm? And guess what?

If our air has been full with all this Global Warming extra energy and moisture, why was the Hurricane season a bust and the Blizzard season historic ?

The haze you see is on the surface from evaporation and the plants. Rain clouds don’t form on the surface, there is not enough moisture.
I was up near Pittsburgh in 1980. Saw the same thing. Clear blue sky only it was ice in the air. Evaporation takes place no matter what temp. it is.

The point is that if your air is warmer, it can hold more moisture. If that warm air then hits a cold air mass, as the air cools, it will release it’s moisture. If the cold air mass is cold enough, that moisture will freeze before hitting the earth, and we will have a storm.

Heat the air and it expands. Cool the air and it contracts. Moisture content can change, but water vapor is a gas and expands and contracts with the air. What the argument ignores is that moisture only forms from vapor if it has a nucleus or catalyst. There has to be a greater nucleus or catalyst to get more moisture formed by the vapor. Otherwise it remains vapor and stays as a gas you can breath.

Dang, that is how you get more moisture from the air. You cool it. Cool a gas (water vapor) and it becomes liquid (moisture). Heat a liquid (water) and it becomes a gas (vapor).

Let me try this again. Water vapor is a gas. You can not get more of it into air by heating the air. The vapor will expand with the air. Both are gases.

Warm air CAN hold more moisture in a given volume than the same volume can hold at a lower temperature.... this is a simple FACT of physics.

So moisture means liquid water or gaseous water vapor ?

OMG these morons are IDIOTS..... ok so if rain or snow precipitates OUT of the air... you know what happens? The air LOSES humidity!

Have you EVER seen such a complete display of total 100% ignorance? The pure stupidity of this argument is one that defies ALL logic! ROTFLMAO.

Miskolczi is correct!

"So moisture means liquid water or gaseous water vapor ?"

Moisture content of air typically refers to gaseous. Condensed water is "fog", "clouds", or "rain".

So if you heat the air, you heat the water vapor. Both will expand. Volume increases and density drops. Total mass remains the same. The only way warmer air could hold more vapor, would be if you are also referring to a greater total mass of air. So their stunning scientific observation is that more air can hold more vapor ?

Yeah, -20 and foggy does happen. The fog is all tiny ice crystals. It usually needs to be a bit cooler, though.

The Great Lakes will often have a big bank of fog during early Winter cold snaps where the air is substantially colder than the water.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that moisture in this context means liquid water. Warmer air has more volume and can thus hold more liquid water. But again, you can only get more liquid water in air if you increase the nuclei catalyst (ex. - Cosmic Rays, Silver Iodide) that stimulate the conversion of water vapor gas to liquid water. And I am guessing that you can also get more by cooling the water vapor gas and just converting it into a liquid.

No. If you heat the air, and there is liquid water available, the air will take up water from the liquid phase into the gas phase. The scenario you describe is where there is no liquid water around. In that case, the CAPACITY of the air to hold water vapor increases, but the amount present does not.

"So their stunning scientific observation is that more air can hold more vapor ?"

Is correct.

Update: Rush cited this article to rip global warmist hypocrisy. On today’s show, Rush Limbaugh cited NewsBusters and read from this article to demonstrate the global warmists’ hypocrisy: “when there is less snow, they say it’s because of global warming. When there is more snow, they say it’s because of global warming. Now you cannot have it both ways.” Rush played several clips of Dem senators in recent years atrributing the lack of snow to global warming. Listen to Rush cite NewsBusters and blast the warmists here: http://media.eyeblast.org/newsbusters/static/2010/2010-02-12RushLimbaugh.wmv

The AGW Cartel and their half baked statements just gave me a headache this morning. Now I understand what you are stating here, but from my point of view it is the temperature of the liquid that matters when going from a liquid to a gas. And it is the temperature of the gas that matters when going from gas to liquid. I think the AGW Cartel would have made a lot more sense if they had just stated the following, Due to the El Nino Warm Waters more Water Vapor Entered the Atmosphere. Cut and dry and they still could have acted like they understood everything. Of course they have no explanation for how that extra water vapor was brought back to liquid form except for Colder Air or Cosmic Rays. Otherwise the Snow Fall Records we are breaking would be old records from 1998.

Later.

Philly was colder than average on the snow days

In my winters on the southern shore of Lake Ontario east of Rochester NY, we routinely would run into teens at night and middle twenties during the day. There was a continuous Lake Effect snowfall as the winds blew across the open water, dropping bands inland. Those tended to be light coverings; the heaviest, thicker ones were between 25-35F - one to two feet a day not uncommon.

This is the first time since I came down in 94 I've seen back to back storms where the first didn't get time to clear. Definitely fun!
