Time Magazine: But can Palin be elected?
Time Magazine ^ | Monday February 22, 2010

Posted on 02/22/2010 6:14:14 PM PST by Bigtigermike

For several decades, it has been an article of faith among political analysts that no candidate can win a U.S. presidential election unless he can dominate the broad center of the spectrum, that all candidates on the edges of the left or right are doomed. And since the G.O.P. Sarah Palin relies upon a base of support that is on the far right of the Republican Party, some experts have long declared that if she wins the nomination, it would simply be suicidal. Barry Goldwater's "extremism . . is no vice" campaign of 1964 provides the classic evidence.

National opinion polls continue to show Obama leading Palin by an apparently comfortable margin, some as high as 25%. They also show that more moderate Republicans like Romney would run better against the President. This suggests that Palin is not the strongest G.O.P. choice for the 2012 election and that she clearly faces an uphill battle. And recently a White House adviser privately looked forward with relish to the possibility of Palin as their target.

Palin cannot hope to win, however, unless she moves beyond the hard-line conservative base that has sustained her since she first appeared on the national political scene as a spokesman for McCain himself. She has no experience in Washington politics or foreign affairs. Both Congress and the federal bureaucracy are as unfathomable to her as they were to Obama.

Palin has a history of committing rhetorical blunders that drive away voters.

Worse perhaps than the verbal gaffe is Palin's relentlessly simple-minded discussion of complex problems. Palin's loose statements and flabby positions will make splendid targets for Barrack Obama, a campaign manager to a rival campaign spoke privately

Full disclosure: changed names here and there. It's not actually Gov. Palin this Time Magazine article's talking about here, BUT RONALD REAGAN running 25 points behind Carter as late as March 1980 - a mere eight months before the election. Simple statements, no experience in DC politics or foreign affairs, supported only by the right wing fringe - completely unelectable and gaffe prone

The purpose is that NO ONE IS OFF THE TABLE IF OBAMA CONTINUES TO FLUB IT......EVEN SARAH PALIN, LET'S WAIT FOR THE POSITIONING OF THESE CANDIDATES AFTER THE 2010 elections, see who's in and who's out and then we can gauge how they fair up.

"..For several decades, it has been an article of faith among political analysts that no candidate can win a U.S. presidential election unless he can dominate the broad center of the spectrum.."

Like Obama you don't have to be in the center to dominate the center IF the voters are sufficiently scared or angry.

“recently a White House adviser privately looked forward with relish to the possibility of Palin as their target”.

Exactly the same thing the Carter White House said about the possibility of running aganist Ronald Reagan.

Palin has a history of committing rhetorical blunders that drive away voters saying things that people who aren't voting for her under any circumstances blow out of proportion.

I love Sarah. And if she throws her hat in the ring, I’m behind her.

But...it’s a little too early. The GOP will take over Congress in 2010; of that I’m certain.

BUT, with their track record and the media working against them 24/7, they could sufficiently screw it up enough to make a very steep hill for Sarah to climb.

Yup. The Palin haters decry any comparison to Reagan, but most of them don’t have any memory of the rise of Reagan.

This is EERILY similar to Reagan circa 1978. The way the press describes Palin is exactly as they described Reagan, despite the weird universe of Palin haters at FR who seem to think Reagan was known as an esteemed orator and gaffe-proof professional speaker during his GOP Primaries.

He wasn’t.

Reagan was accused of stumbling over words, was mocked for using index cards at speeches, and was ridiculed for using “75 IQ words” to explain complex problems. He repeated jabs and phrases to the point where the press believed he couldn’t compete in the intellectual arena; and it gave rise to whispers of dementia due to old age. It always seemed like he was on-script during his Primary runs.

Reagan ultimately became the “Great communicator” because once he was defining himself every day as the nominee and as President, he was able to speak directly to the public. He did not have this luxury as the right-wing extremist candidate in the Primaries. Everyone in the GOP demanded we back Bush because “Reagan can’t win, and all of the polls show it, and everybody knows it.” We were told it was electoral SUICIDE to nominate Reagan, and an absolute GUARANTEE to give Carter a second term.

Sound familiar?

I am in the process of reading her book and it seems that she has climbed some pretty steep hills before. She has a gift for this stuff. Stuff that causes most folks to run...not for office but for the hills. 2010 is going to be fun and a lot of work. 2011 is going to be interesting and 2012 will be time to get to get to work again. (unless in a 2008 redux the msm selects our candidate)

Great trick! I completely bought it. The MSM hasn’t changed in the last 30 years have they? Just do pen and ink changes to their old article and it’s just like what they are printing today.

Makes a very strong point for exactly what you are saying, no one should be off the table at this early point in time.

Don't buy too much of the article but there is some truth to this comment.

Sarah Palin’s political enemies in Alaska said that when she is underestimated when shines, she is tough, despite her enemies even here on FR not wanting to accept how Rahm and the dems were trying to destroy personal lives in her Administration without her and the administration staff having no real recourse to get back.
