Tsunami Warning for Hawaii, First Wave at 11:19 a.m. HST, 10-15 Foot Waves; Advisory for West Coast
Saturday, February 27, 2010 | Kristinn/ NWS

Posted on 02/27/2010 4:37:11 AM PST by kristinn

The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.

A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.

Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.

Latest statement on Hawaii:

BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010

TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII

SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT

A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.

SNIP

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1147Z 27 FEB 2010

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:

A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.

The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

Our home on Maui is on Haleakala at 2700ft. We happen to be in your home town this weekend for the NASCAR races, but have given a heads up to loved ones in Hawaii. The Hawaiian phone books have detailed evacuation plans whereby beach hotel guests are directed to proceed to the upper floors of the property. Small boat marinas such as Lahaina and Maalea on Maui may take a beating.

I was so shocked that there was so little posting over such a major earthquake; now I am surprised that someone would post about such a massive catastrophe without putting EARTHQUAKE in the title; I should have clicked on ACTIVITY to see if there was a major messagethread already. Somehow Kristinn’s NOTICABLE title is staying *pinned* to the top sidebar of breaking news.

That’s fascinating — the big beach hotels in Hawaii can withstand even a major tsunami, right?

Just woke up..... I am sure someone else has said this, but ALL of the shores of Hawaii are at risk. Waves like this will wrap around the whole island, all of them. Waves slow and then literally bend because of that, and they reflect.

If you are in Hawaii, get the hell off the beaches.

Maybe your cats became excited after they heard that Sarah Palin is going to be on the “Tonight” show with Jay Leno on March 2nd?

Hopefully it will peter out by the time it reaches Hawaii.

I also hope it doesn't ruin your fun while you're here.

Have a great time!!

And I thought we were low!

You should be somewhat protected from the wave by the distance as well as being on the same side as the quake, but you best keep your feet firmly planted, there could be more coming.

Not at all. Waves will travel upwards the speed of a passenger Jet, yea, 400 to 600 miles per hour. The wave crest with an earthquake this big from one edge of the top to the other can take 15 minutes to pass a given point they are THAT big. And there can be MANY of them, not just one.

The waves will travel unimpeded for thousands of miles through the water, and they will keep going until their energy is dissipated, which means in some cases around the globe.

The earthquakes in Chile are such that the earth will shift hugely upward over a long distance, perhaps miles. That means BIG waves.

Hawaii is very definitely in danger. The last big one in Chile did a lot of damage in Hawaii.

I checked out the “Honolulu Advertiser” web site.

On the right portion of the screen, under “Breaking Headlines,” was this little tid bit of information.....

“Hawaii remains under tsunami warning, sirens to sound at 6 AM”

“Tsunami sirens to sound at 6 AM, wave to hit Big Island at 11:19 AM”

“Residents along shorelines told to evacuate in advance of waves”

and this final bit of news,

“Wie shoots third-round 69, moves up to 15, five shots back of leaders”

WTF? Hawaii is facing imminent danger to the lives and property of it’s residents, and they’re worried about the results from a golf tournament? And, it’s under Breaking News along with the tsunami warnings? Bizarro world.

I see Alaska and British Columbia getting hit, but NOAA excludes Alaska and BC. Wassup wid dat?

I think God got tired of the curling coverage and is sending a message.

Mahalo!

We have had plenty of false alarms over the years, however you have to take this one very serious. A number of flights from Asia normally arrive at 6AM HST and I’m wondering what alternatives they have once airborne. Mainland flights to Hawaii normally start blasting off around 7 to 8 AM PST so I imagine that they have been delayed?
