Posted on 02/27/2010 4:37:11 AM PST by kristinn
The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.
Latest statement on Hawaii:
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:
TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1147Z 27 FEB 2010
Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

After I read this thread, I did a quick search on 'quake' and 'earthquake' -- so of course I never located the MAIN Chile Earthquake messagethread, which currently is almost a thousand postings long.
I have NO idea why it didn't get into the sidebar, like this thread of Kristinn's did -- I don't really understand the mechanics of thread posting.
Here's the main thread with hundreds & hundreds of posts:
8.8 in Chile [Update at #277]
Don’t miss post no.33
Just kidding, no worries, I bet there is another 10 threads posted on this in the next hour.
Thanks for the link to the other thread :)
TB you better hurry with the donuts, there may be waves!
I just read on CNN that the tsunami is moving at 500 miles an hour!
Live news link here
Thanks Eye of Unk!
That is a fact, at that speed its an underwater shock wave, its when it approaches shallow land is when it builds, a ship at sea would feel a pulse but would probably not see much of a wave.
Well the shop is only 18 feet above high tide but at least the donut mill is on high ground. The north west had one of these mega quakes in 1700 and the geologist say they happen every 200 years?
Sirens will sound in 90 minutes in Hawaii.
Our home on Maui is on Haleakala at 2700ft. We happen to be in your home town this weekend for the NASCAR races, but have given a heads up to loved ones in Hawaii. The Hawaiian phone books have detailed evacuation plans whereby beach hotel guests are directed to proceed to the upper floors of the property. Small boat marinas such as Lahaina and Maalea on Maui may take a beating.
I often wonder where people from Hawaii go for vacations, now I know!
Have a good time in Vegas! Root for Tony for me....
I was so shocked that there was so little posting over such a major earthquake; now I am surprised that someone would post about such a massive catastrophe without putting EARTHQUAKE in the title; I should have clicked on ACTIVITY to see if there was a major messagethread already. Somehow Kristinn’s NOTICABLE title is staying *pinned* to the top sidebar of breaking news.
That’s fascinating — the big beach hotels in Hawaii can withstand even a major tsunami, right?
Just woke up..... I am sure someone else has said this, but ALL of the shores of Hawaii are at risk. Waves like this will wrap around the whole island, all of them. Waves slow and then literally bend because of that, and they reflect.
If you are in Hawaii, get the hell off the beaches.
Maybe your cats became excited after they heard that Sarah Palin is going to be on the “Tonight” show with Jay Leno on March 2nd?
end times, maybe?
thanks for the ping :)
I also hope it doesn't ruin your fun while you're here.
Have a great time!!
I think that was Jan. 20 of '09
And I thought we were low!
You should be somewhat protected from the wave by the distance as well as being on the same side as the quake, but you best keep your feet firmly planted, there could be more coming.
Not at all. Waves will travel upwards the speed of a passenger Jet, yea, 400 to 600 miles per hour. The wave crest with an earthquake this big from one edge of the top to the other can take 15 minutes to pass a given point they are THAT big. And there can be MANY of them, not just one.
The waves will travel unimpeded for thousands of miles through the water, and they will keep going until their energy is dissipated, which means in some cases around the globe.
The earthquakes in Chile are such that the earth will shift hugely upward over a long distance, perhaps miles. That means BIG waves.
Hawaii is very definitely in danger. The last big one in Chile did a lot of damage in Hawaii.
I checked out the “Honolulu Advertiser” web site.
On the right portion of the screen, under “Breaking Headlines,” was this little tid bit of information.....
“Hawaii remains under tsunami warning, sirens to sound at 6 AM”
“Tsunami sirens to sound at 6 AM, wave to hit Big Island at 11:19 AM”
“Residents along shorelines told to evacuate in advance of waves”
and this final bit of news,
“Wie shoots third-round 69, moves up to 15, five shots back of leaders”
WTF? Hawaii is facing imminent danger to the lives and property of it’s residents, and they’re worried about the results from a golf tournament? And, it’s under Breaking News along with the tsunami warnings? Bizarro world.
I think God got tired of the curling coverage and is sending a message.
Latest Statement from Hawaii Tsunami Center(not sure if this was posted)
How long before the Tsunami hits Hawaii?
“Hopefully it will peter out by the time it reaches Hawaii.
I also hope it doesn’t ruin your fun while you’re here.
Have a great time!!”
We have had plenty of false alarms over the years, however you have to take this one very serious. A number of flights from Asia normally arrive at 6AM HST and I’m wondering what alternatives they have once airborne. Mainland flights to Hawaii normally start blasting off around 7 to 8 AM PST so I imagine that they have been delayed?
..but I suspect there will be multiple catastrophic events we can't even imagine.
No, they will bend around obstacles. Think of a rock in a pond, it creates a ring right, so it expands in a arc. When it comes upon shallow water it rises up, the water has to go somewhere. As it “hits” land the wave around that land slows down, making the wave appear to bend, and then it reflects back off of the land shelf. Think of a pylon in a pond, that wave hits the pylon, wraps around and reflects back off of it all at the same time.
Also not known if already posted, possible Tsunamie times on the west coast from California to Alaska.

EWA BEACH, Hawaii Hawaii braced Saturday for a potentially damaging tsunami, after a massive earthquake off Chile sent waves across the Pacific Ocean.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning its highest alert for Hawaii, where incoming waves could cause damage along the coastlines across the island chain. A warning was also in effect for Guam, American Samoa and dozens of other Pacific islands.
The first waves were expected to arrive in Hawaii at 11:19 a.m. Saturday (4:19 p.m. EST).
A lower-grade tsunami advisory was in effect for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands. Authorities in Australia did not issue a warning, but asked residents to stay away from the coast.

Vehicles that were driving along a highway that collapsed during the earthquake near Santiago are seen overturned on the asphalt Saturday Feb. 27, 2010 after an 8.8 -magnitude earthquake struck.
Good grief, I'd say the warning has already been "sounded"...
To give you an idea...go to youtube and search 1960 Chile Tsunami...one of the links is a simulation showing wave travel from that earthquake.
Thanks hennie pennie did you hear about a earthquake in chile?
I don’t see that my husband thought he heard that I’ll have to look for it
The ground actually looked like it became a body of water with swells going through it, most amazing thing I've ever seen.
This one is in front of the Duke Kahanamoku Statue only.
Gives you a sense of just how irrelevant Man is to the Earth doesn’t it?
Indeed, did you see how many vids are up already regarding this current event?
Do you know FReeper fish hawk?
The power of nature is something to behold....AGW....riiiiight!
The Tsunami warning sirens will go off in about 50 minutes from now at 6am HST, the expected first waves will be just after 11am HST.
