Tea Party prominent: Palin not presidential (Tanc no likey Palin)
NRC.nl ^ | 2/28/10 | Tom Jan Meeus

As a Republican congressman from Colorado, Tom Tancredo became well-known for his hard-line opposition to illegal immigration. Last year, the 65-year-old retired from the House of Representatives after a decade. Meanwhile, the country shifted to the left during his prospectless bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Moderate John McCain won the primaries, Barack Obama became president and there seemed to be no place left for Tancredo in national politics. But now he has made his way back into the limelight as one of the faces of the Tea Party movement.

In the course of last year, anti-tax protestors took hold of the public debate on government spending and healthcare. Mainly libertarians and older conservatives from rural areas in particular are taking to the streets with fierce slogans (‘Obama = socialism’) and a deep loathing of “cultural elites”. Earlier this month, Tancredo was the opening speaker at the movement’s first national convention in Nashville.

What makes him a socialist?

“Well, first of all, the definition of socialism is constantly evolving it seems. And given today’s definition, I guess I should have used the word ‘euro socialism’. European type socialists think that big government is acceptable. You don’t own the means of production but you tax the hell out of them for the purpose of redistribution of wealth. That’s closer to his position than the textbook definition in which the government own the means of production.’’

So it’s not necessarily true that he is socialist?

“No. But the ends are the same. You have a flattening income curve and redistribution of wealth mostly based on taxation. He has talked about that. He likes that idea. He talks about the people that have influenced him, and some of them are committed Marxists. So he thinks that way, he works with people who think like that, and he really has no qualms about the government taking over General Motors. I mean, the government saying who can be the chairman of GM? I do not understand that anybody can look at that and say, ‘No that’s not socialism’.’’

Tancredo shows and easy and familiar -- and in my opinion, correct -- view of socialism and I wondered when I read this if Sarah could answer the same two questions as quickly and clearly as he did. (It seems this was unrehearsed, though I could be wrong.)

So in some respects, Tancredo himself seems "more presidential" (whatever the heck that means) than Palin.

However, I would trust her over him to run the country. I would trust her over him to Protect and Defend the Constitution.

I am disappointed in her support for McCain. She didn't have to do it. She could have said, "John, thank you for choosing me for your running mate, but my debt is to the American people, not to you and for the sake of the American people I cannot support you -- or any luke-warm conservative -- for any office in the land at this important time in our history."

She could have said something like that, but she didn't. I'm disappointed. But I still support her and I still like her better than I like Tancredo, even though he's probably 100% right about McCain.

She didn’t FLOP for him, as Rush said, she has no choice but to support him. You can’t run all over the coutry saying McCain would be a great president, and then not support him to hold onto his Senate seat. The press would have a field day with it.

As far a Tanc and others who say she’s not presidential...
WHO ELSE have they ever said wasn’t presidential. I don’t remember them saying it about edwards, Jackson, the list of other candidates with weaker resumes is LONG. But they were MEN. I’ve never heard a candidate declared unqualified before. NEVER... But now that we’ve got a woman they could win ... Now we use terms line unqualified, not a deep thinker, not presidential... And yes, I think the people that think Palin isn’t SMART enough to be president, are sexist…. You would think after all the DUNCE comments the left made about Reagan, that we wouldn’t be dumb enough to fall for it. But we are if that person is a woman.

The Senate? No way, the Senate would be a waste of her talents.

It puts her in an awkward spot. The sooner this becomes moot for McCain the better. Then she can forget she ever knew him.

I know one thing for certain. You’ll see a President Palin before you’ll see a President Tancredo.

You’ll see a President Palin before you’ll see a President Tancredo

And you'll see a Presidente Chavez before either of them if McCain gets his way on amnesty.

We'll just call him Hugito to show our affection.

Agreed. If we get amnesty, the nation is doomed.

I will give you a general definition: Intelligent, very experienced, very knowledgeable, particularly about the United States, its government, Constitution, and foreign countries and foreign affairs, eloquent, charismatic, courageous and someone who can think on their feet.

Sexism? Sounds eerily familiar to the leftist whine of racism when anyone claimed Obama wasn't Presidential timber.

Over 35, natural born citizen and lived in the US at least 14 years.

That’s the Constitutional definition of “Presidential”

She’d be one of 100, and junior at that, in the Senate.

She’d be the left’s nightmare in the Oval Office

"Mainly libertarians and older conservatives from rural areas in particular are taking to the streets with fierce slogans (‘Obama = socialism’) and a deep loathing of “cultural elites”. "

"FWIW."

Absolutely nothing! The absurd statement above clearly indicates the author is the usual drug-ridden KOS type....or a RINO...

Tancredo ran the campaign of an amateur for the 2008 election.
